First of all, nothing mechanical has ever gone wrong with this vehicle since my family purchased it almost 10 years ago. It has never even been serviced except for oil changes, which I regret to say rarely happen on time, and some brake work. The tailgate and rear hatch are rusting pretty badly now, but that is to be expected for a vehicle of this age. The stock cassette player expired in early 2003 but was easily remedied with the installation of an after market CD player.
I love this thing! The only downsides are that it is slow, ugly, and sucks gas like it's free. Otherwise, it is truly excellent. But fast, pretty and efficient were never attributes this vehicle was intended to have. It can haul all your buddies, a cooler, your dog, and tow a boat all while negotiating the most awful terrain imaginable while the A/C blows ice cubes. Off-Road bliss. I have been told that these vehicles are good for 300,000 miles. I can't wait for the next 103,000.
I think your review is great, but I think that the FJ62 is GREAT LOOKING not ugly. I have 1988 FJ62 that I bought new from the dealer back in November/1987 and still have it for all the reasons you mentioned and because it is my first 4WD (Great Looking).
1970's and 1980's land cruiser are the best in the planet. you don't think?
So why people in Africa, amazons, Saudi Araby, austr, etc... still "looking" for them? why discovery channel have a fleet of this trucks? they were built to last, and go ANYWHERE without help (like others) awesome truck, I came from Venezuela, a country full of rivers, desserts, mountain, etc, there is nothing like out there,
this truck is almost invincible ! and good looking too.
My truck have 325k miles, ice a/c, every thing works in this truck, is just awesome. excellent in the snow, sand...
Good luck to all of you guys...
My father bought a new Land Cruiser in 1988. We still have it, it's brand new. However, he said it's time for a change, he's planing on buying a 2007 Nissan Xtrail... I know, I don't approve it either. Can someone give a good reason for not to change for for a crappy Xtrail???
I have a 1989 Toyota FJ.62 LandCruiser GX Wagon.
I purchased it in November 1993 with 56,367 km on the clock.
It has now just clocked up 227,000 km.
It has NO rust and is as sound as it was on the day I bought it.
It is a top vehicle, and no-one has enough money to try and buy it from me.
It is my daily driver.
I got 100,00 km out of the last set of tyres.
They were Uniroyal Laredo ATW 33x12.5x15's.
Unfortunately I can't get them anymore, as they were a tyre dealer import back in 1999.
I have had to settle on Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ 33x12.5x15's.
I hope I get a similar mileage out of them.
Hey guys, I have an 89 cruiser and I have to say besides the really bad mpg, this is the by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. I paid 2,000 for it and to be honest I did not have to pit anything into it and it would still keep running, but after a few replaced parts it runs so good. I have 263,000 miles on it with many original parts. I am so proud to drive that car. I know the world is bad and we should save on gas and energy but I love this car, I want to give it to my son.
Can we see a youtube of you negotiating the most awful terrain imaginable... while towing this boat?
