I have a 2000 ford ranger xls sport 2x4. It has 72000 miles on it. I have had very little trouble with it. It gets very good gas mileage because it has a special engine. "Dual Rapid Fire", meaning, it has 8 spark plugs for just 4 cylinders to burn excess gas for extra power and better mileage.

8 spark plugs means burning excess gas, then how do you get better gas mileage.

It burns the extra gas that usually would be extra meaning no gas is wasted I think.

My 2000 ford ranger xlt off road 4x4 w/stepside bed still has its original battery and my maintience costs are not more than the standard oil and filters, my 3 complaints are 1) poor gas mialiage, I average 18 mpg with the 3.0 engine, 2) lack of acceleration, you would think with using so much gas it would accelerate better??? I could have had a v-8 with as much gas this truck uses, 3) the tire wear is very "lumpy", all in all I rate this truck a 8 on a scale from 1-10.

If Your check engine light is coming on and off there might actually be a problem. You might think about taking it in and having it looked at.

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT Supercab Stepside V6 FlexFuel and it gets good gas mileage at about 20-23mpg. I, ve only had to replace the slave cylinder and it has 66,000 miles. Very good, dependable, and tough little truck.
