1990 Subaru Legacy RS from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

"Cheap to buy.. expensive to run.. worse to repair"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Auto gearbox died.

Several lifters siezed.

Steering rack needed replacement.

4 wheel drive clutch seized.

General comments?

Brilliant open road car... but you have to pre-empt any hills with a manual downshift as the auto is too slow to respond.

Great dirt road abilities.. inspires loads of confidence with 4wd and ABS (a great safety net when Colin McCrae style antics go wrong!)

Extremely fast car... with soggy suspension.

Terrible MPG... can pass virtually anything except a petrol station.

All RS Legacys were manual transmission sedans. If you have an automatic transmission turbo Legacy sedan, it's a GT. Similarly for the wagon; both manual and automatic were designated GT but the manual had RS spec mechanicals.

Because your car is actually a GT it has softer suspension which explains the soggy feeling. And although I like Legacys more than VR4's, I agree about the auto gearbox; it's not nearly as good as the VR4's. But hey! in a car like this, manual is almost a necessity!! Good luck with the car bro.

I own a RS Legacy, it has uprated chips on it and I have had primary and secondary turbos fitted.

I'll tell you it blew away a XR8 Falcon, quite impressive for a flat 4.

What do you consider terrible? I get about 350 miles to a tank tank, however mine is a manual.

I have a 1990 subaru Legacy that has been very badly rusted out. The engine has 88,000 miles on it and the trans is great. I was wondering how I could go about getting a body to go with the engine and trans I already have. I bought the car for my daughter from an elderly couple that hardly used the car. I am spending to much money keeping the car in one piece. I feel with the right body and frame It could last a long time.
