Alternator died, but I don't know how long it had been in the car before I purchased it.
Had a brief charging problem due to the lack of a third belt that runs the air conditioner. It created some kind of imbalance in tension on the belt that runs the alternator.
This is a very comfortable car. I also own a 1990 Cadillac Brougham D'Elegance, and as far as I'm concerned, my Caprice is just as comfortable and as roomy.
For a car of it's size, it also handles well. There is a great deal of body roll, but the turning circle is smaller than you might expect.
Although it's certainly no sports car, the relatively low output Olds 307 that powers the Classic has a surprising amount of pick up. I've had no trouble passing people on highways or picking up speed to merge with traffic on multi-lane highways.
In short, if my current Caprice died, I'd certainly not hesitate before buying another. Really, I think every young person should drive a car like this for at least a little while. The great rear-wheel drive land yachts are a dying breed and, in my opinion, very fun to drive.
The "Classic" in the name says it all. I've owned 2 '85 Delta 88 Olds 4doors (Same car, engine, chassy ect) and an '86 Caprice Wagon. All 3 were amazing cars considering the abuse they endured daily and my lack of any maintanence whatsoever. No wonder the Police & Taxi's used them so long! Only problems I've had with these cars is the electric window control panel (driver's side) and issues with the alternators, motor mounts (on the wagon) and the expense of keeping them filled with gas and oil. Thousands of these cars are crushed every day, some with '85k miles or less (Barely broke in as far as THESE beasts are concerned) And it is up to us to keep them alive and on the road. If you care more about safety, durability, and comfort then econony and style then Cheap, low mileage, well-maintained examples are available amongst many old folk. In conclusion, they truly don't make em like this anymore.
I'm 22 and have a Caprice coupe, and I love it. You'd think for a car that size it wouldn't be that fun to drive, but it really is, it's quick, handles good enough, it's comfortable and roomy and it's always fun to see that big hood out in front of you.
I currently own a 1987 Caprice Classic with the 305 V8, and I will say it is probably my favorite car I have ever driven. it has a lot of body roll, but the weight gives it a lot of hook when you get into it, and after a very few mods it runs just as good if not better than most newer, smaller import cars out there. I wouldn't trade it for the world. the only real trouble I have had from it, is that it burns oil because of it being older, but other than that it is in perfect condition.
I love the huge-ass 225-75R15 balloon tires you can put on these things -- and just charge right up over pot-holes, railroad tracks, speed-bumps, curbs, dogs, little old ladies... without slowing down.
They're more off-road than a lot of trucks out there.
I own an '87 caprice classic handed down (FREE!!) from my dad. Just about to throw in another 307. Those engines just don't die! Amazing! Probably the best car I ever owned. LUVIT!
