My idler pulley went out at about 230,000 miles.
I have a slow slow slow, oil leak. Have had since purchased.
Have an exhaust leak - the "y-pipe" is cracked almost completley around on one side.
Fried the ignition coil due to resistance caused by splashing water on the distributer cap while going through a big puddle.
My car is an excellent daily driver. I have had no major problems with this vehicle. It has 230k on it and is still very powerful and shows know signs of going bad. I paid only 1,000 dollars for this car, so I did not know what to expect at first. But I am very pleased with my purchase. The only thing I dislike is it is very loud. Anytime I push the gas or go down a hill the rear pumpkin makes a loud humming noise. This does not effect the way the vehicle performs though, and I am not worried about it at all. My friend had a '89 cherokee with the same engine and wrecked it with 290k on it. he also drove it very hard everyday. So I would recommend a jeep to anyone who wants power and a long lasting vehicle.
The howling from the rear pumpkin is likely caused by your spider gears in back missing a tooth or two. the dana 30's and 35's used on the grands were sort of notorious for the rear diff being a little weak. the tooth might not cause any problems for you, but it might be a good idea to pull the cover off and have a look (at the least, it'll give you a chance to change all the fluid so there's no shrapnel in it.
