1991 Nissan 240SX SE from North America - Comments

"Buy one, (S13 is best choice in my opinion) or pray God blesses you with one in heaven!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

-Cable for the gas tank broke, but its easier to reach in the back and open with my have rather than spend $50 to fix.

-Powered antennae broke (think it fell off track cause the motor still works), but it picks signal up just fine with it down.

-Cloth seats are starting to tear up, but it IS 15 years old.

-Rattle in the exhaust, but it could be my fault for ripping off the resonator.

-I believe the synchronizers for the 4th gear in the transmission are going bad.

General comments?

My uncle had this car before me for like 6 or 7 years, and I always knew I wanted that one, so he gave it to me when I turned 16. It’s a ’91 S13 SE hatchback (came with hicas system and lsd) and runs like a hauss.

I have never been more in love with a car than I have this one.

It handles like a champ and makes darting around traffic an easy task. Just put on a front and rear strut bar and body roll becomes next to nonexistent.

Came with the ka24de engine, which was originally a truck engine in the Nissan hardbody pickup. Gets great gas mileage 25/28, but I put a cold air intake on it so normally it would be like 24/27 or so. Loads of low-end and so easy to build up now with a turbocharger since people discovered how a great an engine it is.

Didn’t have a very good sound system, but some pioneer 4x6’s and 12” subs solved that nicely.

One of only 2 cars I would never get rid of. However I probably won’t ever get the other so I won’t have to wry about getting rid of it. L (Black, Nissan Skyline GT-R 34, preferably the Nur model or most recent)

I recently bought a '91 hatchback because I had foolishly sold an '89 I'd previously bought for my son after he went into the Army (He has a '94 RX7 now) and this was the first one I found for sale locally in a couple of years at a reasonable price.

Please explain the difference between between S13 and S14. I thought this had to do with the engine; i.e., single or twin cam. The '91 has the twin cam, so I presume S13 / S14 has to do with another feature. What is it?

I'm disappointed to find that this car has multi-link / struts suspension. I stupidly had presumed wishbone / shocks and had never looked to verify. This probably wouldn't have stopped me from buying it anyway because the vehicle form, platform and drive-ability are so pleasing.

This one does not leak, either at the sunroof or hatchback. The spoiler had rusted a 1.5 inch hole at a mount, so I removed it and will patch & fill all of the mount holes with adhesive body patch inside & then fill outside. So far, duck tape is keeping water out. Also, I'm not sure, but I think the nose is not stock Nissan, because it seems ungainly compared to the '89 and this '91 seems to have a "styling cue" crease line along the body shoulder, which I don't like very much & I don't remember from the '89. Not very many '89 - '91 240SX's around here to compare it to, though.

With 139k miles on it, the engine runs fine, but I bought it with an auto trans; advertised with "no reverse". Actually, it won't get in any gear or move any direction except forward. If anyone doing a manual conversion wants to donate a working auto trans, please post (Louisiana).

S13 is the 89-94 240sx and S14 is the 95-98 240sx.

The car is known for its good balance and handling.

Note: S13 S14 and S15 - All these are are the chassis code. S13 would be from 89-94, S14 is from 95-97 and S15 is 98' on.

I bought my S13 off a guy for $600. The starter is weird and has a batman button because they weren't very car savvy.

The Suspension is shot, so I'm having to replace that.

Wiring to the alternator was messed up and was just fixed today.

Muffler rattle because the hangers are broken.

Oil leak. Iono where yet, but its all over the AC pulley.

:DD great car, easy to work on! I'm enjoying mine.

I bought my 91 240sx hatchback 2 wks ago, got it for $300, the problem it has is that it lacks power, before I bought it I was told that it was the transmission but I have a feeling that it might be the catalytic converter, transmission makes no noise and it does run normal on reverse, it smokes a bit but it was sitting there for 1 1/2 yr, but it seems to be smoking less every time I warm it up, motor sounds beautiful, interior is good, a/c is awesome, sunroof and 17 inch rims, I am ready to do what it takes to put it on the road. If anybody had a similar problem please let me know what you did so I can look into it. Thanks.
