Ha ha, what hasn't gone wrong with it. I have had the car over a year now and I keep very good care of it. Just recently I have started to have problems. One day I was driving and I ripped my exhaust right out the end of the header. I replaced the part and all was well, for about a week. My master cylinder on my clutch now leaks into the passenger compartment through the firewall (what a mess), now I need a new carpet. And my engine won't rev-up past 3500rpm at full throttle, can't figure out why, I have ran so many tests on it and just can't get it. I still drive it every-day, slowly.
I will not own anything other than rotary.
This is my second Rx-7. My first was a 1991 convertible, I owned it for about a year and loved every second of it.
I also have an 86 that experienced a similar problem with the rpm limit (though in my case it was intermittent). The car has 126,000 miles and exhibits several of the obvious electrical problems (IE cold solder joints) that these cars are known for (which may contribute to the problem). After considerable trouble shooting, I began to notice that my volt meter reading seemed to correspond with how well my car would run. It would never read over about 12.5 volts (ideally should be 13.2 ~ 14.2), and would suddenly jump to 12 or 11.5 volts. The problem with the rpm limit got worse as voltage got lower (I surmise it was an issue with inadequate voltage to fire the secondary injectors which kick in at about 3800 rpm). When voltage was 12.5, car ran great. 12 volts -- infamous 3800 rpm hesitation, 11.5 volts 3800 rpm max rpm. New alternator (now reading about 13.0 ~ 13.2 volts), problem fixed. May be something for you to look at anyway -- hope this helps.
