2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP from North America - Comments

"Exceptional sports sedan!!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Wheel bearings (hub assemblies) both sides, @ 62K. I am told this is a common problem with high powered front drive vehicles. Tires seem to wear easily, but the 280 lb.-ft. of torque could have something to do with that:)

General comments?

This is the ULTIMATE sleeper machine!!! Very nice interior, stylish exterior, all supplemented by a 240 horsepower supercharged GM 3.8 liter V6. GM's 3.8 has proven to be a very reliable engine over all the years it has been produced. I recommend the addition of a cold air intake kit, and freer flowing exhaust, as these really wake the car up. If you plan on adding a smaller diameter pulley for the supercharger, make sure you get a transmission cooler, to help with excess power put through the tranny. I will update this as the miles are racked up on my GTP. Oh, yes, I also achieve around 26 mpg, in combined city/highway driving.

You don't need a transmission cooler on a '97-'03 Grand Prix, our transmissions do not get hot, even with mods.

Yeah, that's why mine is slipping @ 85K huh? Wish I had listened to this guy.

This is as good a time as any to add to my review. My GTP is still running strong, and has much more horsepower now than it used to. I took it to the strip and ran a 14.1 @ 98mph with very limited traction. That's with 100,000 miles, too! My tranny started to slip about 20K miles ago. I got online and found some anti-slip lube that was supposed to be only in Germany & put it in with my trans fluid change; it has not slipped since. Keeping my fingers crossed though. I am trading the car in on a 2002 Buick Regal GS tomorrrow so I felt I should comment that my car has been the best car I've ever had, but the miles are piling on, and I don't want to have to fix little things. All in all, it has been a great car, and I would recommend a GTP to anyone.

I would suggest replacing the fluid and filter to take care of the problem, instead of dumping additives into it same with the nose drive every 50,000. These transmissions are built strong, but if you abuse it, plan on replacing it.

I also remove the brake fluid and power steering fluid, and replace with new every couple of years, to try to try to keep them new.

You can't blame mechanical failure on poor maintenance.
