Bouncy ride. Windshield washer fluid warning light alwyas on.
AC getting week.
I want expecting much. I drove KCARS, OMNIS, and the horrible Sundances, even crappy Lasers and the Stealth, all left a poor impression of the Chrysler product.
An old man down the street sold the Acclaim to me at 30,000 miles for $500, in mint condition. It's now at 130,000.
I only replaced brakes.
My wife drives it. It is now poorly maintained. One oil change in the last 50 000, but I do top it up. I want expecting much. I don't like it. It is slow, dull, handles poorly.
It has a bigger car feel on the inside. It is like a well made K Car. It IS a well made K Car. Cheap, poor design, but
well assembled.
I have to admit here is is very reliable, to my surprise. My mechanic 'OK', to my surprise. I thought we'd have blown them gasketssaid they were or the tranny by now and we could scrap it for a nice old Caddy or Lincoln, but alas it runs strong.
Even the tape deck works. The AC is pretty week now.
I get the impression that this was a reliable model overall, but Chrysler went on to make some real crap in the 90s, like the Intrepids, Neons etc.
If this one hits a big repair, Ill go out and buy another car. They are cheap!
One oil change in 50,000 miles? It will die under that sort of treatment. Why not sell it to someone who will appreciate it for $500 rather than destroy it?
UPDATE: Blew the engine! Perhaps oil change would have been a good idea. The Acclaim was a a cheap car to run.
Wow, this is a testimonial to how great of a car this really was! It was owned by someone who hated it, never took care of it, and probably prayed for it to die every day, and yet much to his chagrin, the car went on to rack up 100,000 trouble-free miles. Just think if he'd have actually taken care of it!
I hated the 2.2/2.5 for stock performance, but they really were some tough engines... I never had the infamous head gasket issue on any 2.2/2.5 I owned (87 Horizon, 88 Reliant, 94 Shadow), and that seems to be the ONLY problem people have reliability-wise with this motor.
Hell, I never even changed the timing belt on any of them ---- the Horizon I sold at 100K miles, the Reliant went 140K before being totaled, and the Shadow went over 100K before my cousin managed to crack the block somehow (she bought it from me after 100K), and it was STILL running for a couple of weeks afterwards.
My parents constantly ran the Reliant low on oil before I acquired the car, never any engine problems whatsoever up until the day it was hit.
I don't think any modern engine on the market would have a chance in hell of surviving such abuse.
