1993 Volvo 850 GLE from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

"A good car, nice to drive, but a clearly not as "Volvo" as earlier Volvos"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

A/C evaporator went just after purchase. - $AU1700 repair.

Front suspension brushes - cheap repair, but lasted about 10,000km before making knocking sound again.

Front wheel bearings - making loud humming noise at speed.

Belt tensioner - engine making squealing noises before this was replaced.

Otherwise just routine maintenance.

General comments?

This car is an insult to all the principles and and benefits established by earlier Volvos - 240s, 740s etc.

The 850 has more problems, does not feel as durable and is not as good quality.

It is a real shame that Volvo abandoned what it did best (quality, reliability, durability) to chase the "trendy" market.

This is my thrid Volvo, but I'd have serious reservations as to buying another post-850 Volvo unless I see concrete evidence that the quality has improved to at least pre-850 standards.

The Volvo 850 is very Volvo unlike newer models, the only problem with yours is that it is a 1993 model, these Volvo`s were the first of this series and had many beginner problems. If you are considering a newer Volvo I would suggest you go for the C70 or S60.

As an owner of a 93 model Volvo 850 GLE, I think for the most part this car was Volvo's best work at that time. It was, after all, their biggest selling model ever before the newer range came into place in late 90s.

The comfort is excellent, which Volvo, even today, are renowned for. The car is very solid, it feels like its well built, although the car feels a bit "tank" like to drive, the power steering does work quite well but could be lighter.

The transmission tends to be very sluggish taking longer to move from 1st-2nd than what one would consider normal. However the car has good power in third.

The car didn't come with airbags which is a disappointment considering volvo's safety reputation, although SIPS was standard.

Mine has given me next to no problems, engine wise I have replaced a radiator hose, replaced rear rotors and brake pads. Nothing else has had to be done mechanically other than the standard services.

Very reliable car, One of the last "true" Volvo's before ford bought the company.
