1971 Ford Cortina GT from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Cortina-built in obsolescence personified"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

It was already 27 years old when I bought it and quite a rare car, it needed plenty of welding just to bring it up to mot standard. mechanical problems were never much of an issue with cortinas, they either run or they don't. rear axle void bushes needed changing for every MOT. such a stylish looking car, a pity they were never rustproofed properly. they rot everywhere, sills, floors, chassis rails, arches, wings, screen surounds, etc etc.

General comments?

A wonderful looking car, almost a scaled down american muscle car with that menacing 4 headlight front end. mine was only a 1600 ohc, the GT meaning you got a twin choke webber and a 4 branch manifold, and exactly the same economy as the 2 litre. i. e pretty bad...

So they don't go very well, they are poor on petrol and they don't handle. who cares? just look at it!!

The interior was ultra cool in a retro sense with those sunken dials and tombstone seats.. I uprated mine with a 2.3 V6 and power steering, bigger brakes etc. I wish I'd never sold it.

MY very 1st car was a cortina mk2 1600e and I still have very fond memories of that white 1969 model.

It went well with its 1.6 gt engine, which produced around 86bhp, and handled nicely with its Lotus developed suspension, though watch out for those brakes!.

I bought a cortina 1600e a few years ago, its been in a garage since and is in great condition. I was looking to have the engine, brakes and a power steering upgraded done. can you recommend anyone.

The review referred to a 1971 GT which was a MK3. the 1600e was a mk2 and totally unrelated.

I don't see how you could put power steering on a mk2 cortina, werent they steering boxes on them? perhaps a capri rack could be made to fit to give you PAS?
