1995 Jeep Wrangler Sahara from North America - Comments

"A terrific jeep to own!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Catalytic Converter went at 75,000 miles, but was covered under manufacturer. Serpentine belt and battery replaced at 10200 miles. That's it!

General comments?

I have owned 3 1995 Jeep Wranglers and believe the YJ 4.0 with the straight 6 is one of the best Jeeps ever made! I originally bought a 1995 Jeep Wrangler S (4cyl). Do not make this mistake! People will tell you that the 4 cyl gets better gas mileage. This is not true. The 4cyl's top speed is around 70mph (depending on which way the wind is blowing, not kidding). Running a 4cyl wide open causes more fuel consumption on the highway than the 6cyl.The 6cyl is also more reliable. Several mechanics have told me most of the 4cy have to be rebuilt before the 100,000 mile mark.

Not only is it incredibly fun and powerful to drive, its reliability makes it a joy to own. The simplicity of this model makes it easy and inexpensive to work on. There are also less systems on the jeep to break.

The 4cyl Wrangler gets marginally better fuel mileage. I average 20 in the summer and 18 in the winter. Not terrific, but it is better than the 6cyl I had which rarely got above 16 all the time.

I could not disagree more with the reliability of the 4cyl. I have 126K with no work done on the engine what-so-ever. Funny that mechanics I spoke to said the little 4cyl was pretty much a trouble free engine and does not experience the oil leak problems the 6cyl have. And at 126K there are no oil leaks.

I too have owned 3 Wranglers with the 4.0 liter 6 cylinder and have not had any issues with this engine. None have leaked nor burned oil.

My current Wrangler (a 1995) has 135,000 miles and still runs like new.

I also prefer the YJ over the TJ. I had a brand new 2003 Sahara, but went back to a YJ. They're more true to the Jeep'a roots, in my opinion.

I've worked for many Chrysler/Jeep dealers in the past, and the old YJ Wranglers are pretty much trouble free vehicles.

To the original reviewer - the 4.0 liter engine in your Jeep is an in-line (straight) six cylinder engine, not a V6.
