On paper, this is an excellent car. In reality, the G35 needs more refinement. The car has a huge amount of road noise. The ergonomics of the car, such as the stereo controls are placed in a strange position, as though the car was designed for right hand drive (it was).
Given the problems with the clutch, transmission and other drivline related problems, I can't wait to get rid of the car. There is a large amount of driveline noise.
The dealer service department needs improvement.
The engine has lots of torque with a flat powerband which is excellent, but isn't very smooth when compared to the BMW 3 330. The transmission feels notchy. The shifter likes to vibrate like crazy on these cars. Cheap interior.
Excellent handling and very strong Brembo brakes. The car also looks VERY good.
With 280 horsepower and 270 pounds of torque with rear wheel drive, the car looks great on paper, but in reality, it isn't refined enough. It feels as though Nissan designed and built these cars on a monday morning with a bad hangover. I really miss my 2001 Acura CL-S (And I'm a car guy- that's how bad this car is).
The newer 2006 cars are better, with better interior materials for the doors and centre console. Get one of those in an automatic, and you're much better off.
I'm going to be trading this 2003 piece of junk for something more refined and smooth, perhaps a BMW 3 series or Acura TL, maybe even an S4.
Very dissapointed with a car I've been looking to own for a long time.
(NOTE: I purchased the car used from a business associate of mine. The car is local, never been crashed and bought/serviced since new from our Infiniti dealer. The car is mint, so that's not the problem.) Don't buy one!
I don't think you're going to find the reliability you're looking for in an Audi S4. They're remarkable cars with superb refinement, but they're also what allow mechanics to put their kids through college.
I was really wanting a G-35 until I talked with a friend of mine who just retired from running an exclusive repair shop for high-end foreign luxury and sports cars. He told me the repairs and upkeep would offset any possible advantage the car might have in the way of performance. He suggested I look at the very unpopular, but awesome performing Pontiac GTO, which is slightly less expensive, but has tons more horsepower, does 0 to 60 about 3 seconds faster than the G-35 and has a very well-tuned and refined suspension setup. Being a GM product (basically an Australian Holden Monaro) it will have far greater reliability and much cheaper upkeep. I'm now considering that or the V-8 Mustang.
Three seconds faster in the 0 - 60 time? Where are you getting your specifications from? I like the GTO a lot, but a 3 second faster 0-60 would mean that the GTO would run 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. I don't know of any stock car doing that.
I don't like magazine racing, but look for yourself online within a site such as modernracer.com.
The specs on the G-35 that I read give a 0 to 60 time of 7.3 seconds.
What's wrong with you people? GM products aren't reliable (except for some Buick models) and the Pontiac GTO looks like an old Cavalier on steroids!
To the Commenter above: GM's aren't reliable? They generally score much higher on initial quality ratings then Nissan. Don't get you Nissan confused with Honda. They are not the same in terms of quality. Try looking around this site. The 4 cylinder Altima and Sentra SE-R are not exactly the pinnacle of reliability.
I think japanese cars are a lot more reliable I had american cars before and I have so many mechanical issues with them so I rather go for the nissan plus the nissan is doing better then the GM, GM is going broke.
I've owned my G35 since 03 and it's never been in the shop... and I've never repaired a thing either. It's simple... nothing's gone wrong.
I would call this the muscle car of the luxury sector. It may not be overly refined, but it's so darn fun to drive!!
The paint isn't the best quality and the chrome is chipping a little on the wheels, but then I haven't driven it like an angel either.
I've owned 12 cars over the last 8 years. I will run my G35 into the ground because I love it too much to get rid of it. I will own another someday!
I have been raised on Nissan Toyota & Honda since I was little and they have proved to be more reliable than any Chevy, GM or Ford we owned. To the comment about the Nissan 4-cyclinder I have a 2005 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V & I put 45k miles on it in a year and a half with little minor problems. Japanese cars are far better than american cars in every aspect. To the owner of the G35, sorry to hear about your troubles, you might have purchased a lemon...
I just took delivery of an 06' Coupe with automatic. The only issue I have is a very loud and obnoxious interior noise that seems to originate from the dash board. It's like a loose screw on an interior panel of some kind. A vibration buzzing if you will. Has any one else had this same issue and what is my most likely suspect?
Why is it that Consumer Reports rates the G35 as a used car best bet? I've had Nissans and now an Infinity QX4 and have not had a single problem. In fact my 1977 Datson 280Z has 235,000 miles on it and is origional everything! In my opinion, nobody builds a more reliable car than Nissan. I currently own a 05 Altima, 06 350Z, 04 Frontier, 02 Infinity QX4, and a 1977 Datson 280Z. Can't beat Nissan quality.
Obviously this guy got a bad G, which I wouldn't say isn't without faults. I own a 2003 with 30k miles, bought used in 05, have put another 30k miles on and up until now I haven't had any real costly repairs, just minor annoyances like the CD changer not working, loud interior, and now the check engine light is on, but hey for the most part its given me 3 good years. There is no other car in this price range where you can get this amount of power and luxury for the price, and now it's time to sell.
