2004 Renault Megane Dynamique from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Really nice car let down by the odd electrical gremlin"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Sunroof refused to open or close - twice. Now fixed.

Keyless entry system

Electric window (rear). It dropped like a stone and wouldn't go up again.

One-touch electric window (front). Seems to have fixed itself.

Dreadful brake squeal. Unresolved.

Electric door mirror (intermittent fault). MAde a strange buzzing sound.

Digital dashboard window/panel (intermittent fault)

Auto wipers (intermittent fault).

Rear wiper (intermittent fault). Seems to have fixed itself.

General comments?

Despite having had some problems I really like this car. It has many good qualities and it has never broken down. And the dealer has been extremely competent in fixing things. I have not reported all the faults because they don't always occur and I shall be buying another Megane soon.

The turbo diesel engine is an amazing piece of engineering. It's fast, economical and very refined.

It is extremely comfortable, the seats are very supportive on long journeys and the fabric is wearing well.

This car has masses of character, it is a very pleasant car to drive and I have no regrets buying it.

Overall I am a satisfied owner. However Renault need to spend a bit more effort ensuring all the electrics are robust. In my opinion they still have some work to do in this area. It will be interesting to see how 2006 Megane compares.

Renault Megane Dynamique purchased new July 2003

Problem experienced: difficulty in starting - engine turns over, but does not fire; immediately stalls; if revs maintained starts off running roughly. Intermittent fault - six attempts this year to remedy fault, but fault occurs again

-has occurred again 27/8. No other problems, but this fault makes the vehicle unreliable. Renault UK advised.

Hi guys...

It's an ECU problem believe it or not. bad news I'm afraid cause it's a major job. I contacted Renault about this and the ECU is definately the issue, however £300 for the ECU alone its hardly worth it! If you can get all the parts from the breakers and do it yourself maybe?

I have had this problem - wipers come on when blower switched on. I found the fault and have fixed it. It is an earthing problem. On my Megan Coupe (T reg) there is an electrical connector located under the piece of plastic trim on the offside of the driver's foot-well (where the bonnet lever is). I carefully pulled the trim out and then pulled out the large black connector. I could see that it had 'burn' damage where the earth wires from the front wipers and the blower are found side by side. The rest of the connections didn't look too bad. I removed the damaged earth wires from the top half of the connector and repaired them with new pieces of wire and crimp connectors linking them back using 'T' connectors to the respective wires entering the bottom half of the connector thus bypassing the connector for these 2 wires. You could just remove the bottom wires from the black connector too but I didn't cos I had a couple of 'T' connectors. I plugged the two halves of the black connector together again (after a little clean-up) and everything worked fine again.

This fault showed itself as an approx. 40ohm resistance between the earth wire on the wiper motor connector (disconnected from motor) and the car body. Should be very low resistance of course (a lot less than 1ohm?).

I bought a Renault Megane Diesel DCI 80 Dynamique in March 04. It is now back in the garage for its 3rd engine management computer two of which I had to pay for out of my own pocket costing over £500 each all due to corrosion I believe that this is extremely unfair considering the age of the vehicle. Renault however did pay 30% towards the first unit, but were not interested when it came to the next. For corrosion to play such a major part in this issue makes me think that this could possibly be a fault with the design of the vehicle has anybody else experienced the same thing. The car however apart from the above is well built.

Thank you very much, this was not an ECU problem at all. I refer to the heater / wiper problem.

I did exactly as you said; bared the wires used a standard screw up connector and insulating tape. I it fixed in 10 minutes. EXCELLENT! Thank You. (Total repair £5.45 - that included buying a wire stripper for £3.50)

I have the dephaser problem with my03 megane 1.6vvt. I want to sell the car because I've had no end of faults. The cheapest I can get it fixed from a garage is £500. I don't want to pay this much on a car I'm going to sell and can't sell it with the loud rattle noise on starting that comes with this fault. Does anyone know how I can stop the noise to sell it? Please contact me if you think you could help in anyway? Shakey1982@hotmail.co.uk.
