My steering wheel made clunking sounds when you turned the wheel and you could feel the sterring wheel bind when making
the turns. It certainly did not give me a sense of security. This started when the car had 16,000 miles on it and it still does the same thing.
I brought the car back to the dealer
2 times where I purchcased the car and they could not find it. In my opinion it was none sense they did not want or know how to fix it.
It is a shame because the rest of car is a gem.
I have not yet decided what to do or what type of car to buy again.
The problem that you are experiencing is excessive play in the intermediate steering shaft. It's not a safety hazard, however, they do have to replace it under warranty if your car is still covered under warranty. My 2001 and 2004 Impala both experienced the SAME EXACT problem, as well as my wife's 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue. It's just a typical problem in GM "W" cars and the GM pickup trucks. Take it to the dealer and make sure to mention the "Intermediate Steering Shaft"; I GUARANTEE that will take care of your problem. I do believe there is a service bulletin for that and I know there is a revised part number for that part. Good Luck.
Many GM front-drive cars suffer this problem. It is typically the intermediate steering shaft that makes the noise. There should be a TSB (technical service bulletin) for this problem. It can be re-greased and reinstalled and the problem should disappear.
By the way, your car isn't turbocharged. It's got the 3.8L L67 SUPERCHARGED motor in it. Big difference between superchargers and turbochargers. Not to nitpick or anything. :)
As mentioned by the other two people, there definitely IS a TSB on the issues you are describing - you need to take the car to a competent dealership and have them take care of it - you should be good to go.
