"A rare gem that will be worth something"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

3.4 DOHC OH GOD (nightmare)

General comments?

First of all there is really no point in talking bad about a used car, because you know that somewhere down the line something will give, even though you did your homework on the car or had it checked or inspected or even fixed before buying it. The car someday, somehow, somewhere will let you down. I knew all the problems that came with the cutlass supreme I had the 3.4 dohc convertible coupe, a beautiful car with the triple black leather scheme. If you like the supreme get them with the 3.1 multiport the 3.4 are very rare and are extremely unpleasant to fix you'll have less horsepower, but I think you'll be happier knowing you didn't have to fix a piece that would have sent you to the dog house, but if the temptation is too great and too hard to resist then go for it (3.4 dohc)!! But be warned, put a side some money for that not so sunny day.

Would add that one should look for a 1995 model: last year made and a much better looking dash design than the older ones.

I disagree because you can interchange certian parts and bypass certian aspects. If you do your research and go to the proper place (as you should with any car) you'll find that it's no more expensive than a different car.

I do agree the '95 is more attractive dashboard wise.

In response to the comments made by happy 3.4 convert owner I know all about interchanging parts, I've had many w body cars in the past and they all share some really mean problems, but nothing like the 3.4 dohc, I'm talking engine department only. This engine is very unique in comparison to other engines that gm made in that time of era, and almost 80% of mechanics or anybody who has knowledge about the 3.4dohc would admit that they have significant problems and the better choice would be the 3.1,but my thoughts and views are for those who are considering getting the 3.4 and who are on a tight budget or know nothing about the dohc.

I own a Red 3.4 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible. This car looks very good in the sun going downtown. But it worries me everyday because it doesn't seem reliable. In fact, yesterday morning I had no blinkers and no tail lights. The dome light inside has never worked plus the hazard lights have never worked either. I plan on getting the the blinkers and tail lights fixed, but everything else works very nice. If your thinking of buying a used Oldsmobile, just don't.

Hey- I own a '94 convertible with under 70k. It does have the 3.4 DOHC and is a pleasure to drive. I don't see why the DOHC is so bad. Just make sure you get the timing belt checked every once in a while. It has just enough power at 210 horse and 215 ft. lbs. of torque. It isn't as fun to drive without all that power. I got a '94 because of the dash design, the steering wheel design, and the rear buckets (which don't come with the 3.1 or the '95). I agree with all owners of these cars. They do look great going down the road. -DOHC Lover.

I just bought a 1 owner 94 Cutlass w/3.4 engine and I think I like it, so far. Really don't know what to expect, but hoping for the best. Body and interior etc are exceptionally clean--garage kept red/grey. Sure runs, rides and handles well.

I bought a 94 3.4dohc and is very fast and fun. Have had transmission rebuilt and is getting 18 mpg in town and around 28 on hwy (GREAT!!) consider my other car is H3. I love the styling of this car. We had one new and leaked in rear floor board and could not get it fixed. This one is doing the same, but am keeping it. The new one in 94 was teal this one is red. The teal one had heads up display, a great feature. I love the controls on the steering wheel, the lighted roll bar and the bucket seats along with the 94 dash better than the 95. Would like to find am,fm cd to replace my am,fm cassette to work with my steering wheel controls. A GREAT CAR.

I have a 95 3.4 convertible with 26,230 actual miles on it. Been garage kept from previous owner which was a 72 year old lady that bought the car new in 95.I have had problems finding the quarter window sealing strips which are the rubber molding at the bottom of the quarter windows in the rear. Have enjoyed having this car, but actually fixing to sell. Wife and I didn't put but 400 miles on it last year. Can be contacted at 903-235-2876 or 903-237-6680

I too have the 1994 3.4 Cutlass convertible, with 139,000 miles on it Bought the car new and have loved driving it. And yes, my mechanic tells me everything is in the wrong place and car is hard to fix. Had the body cleaned up in January, but the transmission just went out. Trying to make the difficult decision on whether to pull the plug.

I hear you too brother, I just lost 4th gear (overdrive) and now developed the famous "o" ring seal leak, where the distributor used to be in the early v6 60'degree blocks. It's a shame. Trying desperately hard not to sell her. Anyhow, it was a nice run while it lasted. Now she sits in the yard where she might remain for a long while. Already pulled the battery. Probably the beginning of the end. I will have to reflect hard during these winter months.(from original posting guy)

I own a white (black interior) 95 Cutlass Supreme Convertible .... with the 3.4L DOHC engine, with 76K miles. Its garage kept and only sees the outdoors on sunny weekends in the summer. While I know all about many of the issues with the 3.4L engine (intake gasket leaks, o ring oil leaks, timing belt, etc), and all the other cheap GM parts (turn signal stem, electronics, knobs, etc.) that break, its still a great car to drive. Mine still turns heads every time it comes out. I took a 3rd place at a cruising car show this summer with it... so it keeps me smiling. But seriously, if anybody finds those rubber rear quarter window seals, please note that here. I need them (just like everyone else)!! I put a new top (white) on last fall, by a local upholstery shop and it looks as good as the original. This car will remain my toy for years to come, and it WILL become a nice, sought after collectible. Count on it!!
