"I have loved this car, but am concerned about its reliability"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

New brakes at 30,000 miles.

Check engine light continuously on and off.

New alternator and belt at 60,000 miles.

Brake light and Battery light come on in the a.m. since the new alternator was installed. Tightened the belt, didn't help.

New mass air flow sensor at 60,000 miles.

General comments?

The car is very comfortable, and up until now has been extremely reliable.

I also own a 00' I30. 125K miles on it. The service engine soon light is a common problem in the 00' maximas and I30s. Mine was repossed, so it was neglected an in need of a good owner. The most notorious problem with this car is the coil packs. They will trigger the SES light. There are 6 of them, and as time gos they will all go bad. If one is starting to go bad, then the engine will miss for a few seconds, and then correct itself, or at freeway speeds, you will feel a jerking sensation. Also, if severe enough, the SES light will flash. If you have the coil pack issues, don't pay the dealer. They can be replaced by anyone. Also, when looking for mechanical parts, sometimes it is cheaper to search for an 00' Maxima, they are mechanical twins and almost all parts are the same. Goodluck!

I also have a 2000 Infiniti I30. Check engine light started coming on at 50,000 miles while still under warranty. They suggested our occasional young drivers may be putting less than premium gas in car. Next held us off longer by suggesting the gas cap was faulty. Each time they reset the light without any repair or paperwork. Next, it would not pass inspection in Texas because of check engine light. We had coils replaced. Days later check engine light is on again. Now we have moved to Georgia. Will not pass entrance emissions because of check engine light. Have replaced spark plugs, knock sensor, catalytic converter. Infiniti has pretty much ignored several emails and letters asking for help. We have five friends with same year and model. Same issues have been cropping up with them. One was very vocal and his local dealer did the work at no charge, after the warranty and after he bought an M series. I for one will not be replacing my 2004 Maxima with the G-35 we picked out and will not be replacing my I30 with the FX35 I had in mind. I will not be getting another Nissan product.

For anyone else having trouble getting through emmissions testing because of your service engine soon light or catalytic converter code. Federal Law requires all vehicles 1995 or newer to be warranted for 8 years or 80,000 miles. Don't count on Infiniti and their written warranty. Additionally if you have a fail notice from your state it is possible to obtain a repair waiver for this particular model and make.

I also have a '00 I30t w/68K miles. Since the warranty ended, I've had to replace belts, battery, and alternator. The engine light is the biggest problem: replaced O2 sensors and camshaft position sensor so far. I haven't replaced coils, but I do notice the car vibrating from time to time. My shop said the latest incident may be due to a faulty computer of some kind (the part alone is $500+). Luckily, I have a good relationship with the shop so they resetted the engine MIL to see if the same problem appears again. I probably will not buy another Nissan product (I almost made the mistake of buying a Titan).

Update: I just replaced my coils. Let's see if that takes care of the SES once and for all. I ordered the genuine Nissan parts online (hoping they will last longer this time). I then took it to a shop who replaced them in 30 minutes. It was way cheaper than the $1000+ the dealer wanted to charge. I know I could have replaced them myself, but I just couldn't get around to doing it.

I have Infiniti I30 00 with 135,000 miles on it. Have it for 1.4 year.

I love this car!!! It has good looks, all the comfort you need on long trips and speed. I can pass very much anyone from the traffic light if really need to. It's been good to me and I'll keep it for many more years. Dealership service is as good as Mercedes! Very nice leg room in the back. Beautiful interior compared to other cars. Bose stereo is fantastic! Paint still looks like new on a 7 year old car!

Problems:

1. Air flow mass sensor replaced.

2. Tranny solenoids fixed (dealer said they went bad because nobody performed any service on the car for 90,000 miles!!! and never changed mass airflow sensor even when it went bad. Dealer also said MAF sensor is a regular maintenance item on this car and has to be replaced after certain mileage).

3. One coil went bad (100 bucks to fix with my local mechanic). This car has 6 coils (most cars have just one). Reason - if one goes bad, engine misfires and shuts one cylinder down and runs on the other 5 so that you can still drive around. Of course, consumption of gas is increased by 20 percent, so you have to fix it right away. However, don't forget, coils is a part of tune-up, so do regular maintenance according to the manual and you will not have coil problem.

That's it! No more problems to report. The car has been in the shop for only 5 days in 1,4 years! I bought it from the auction and it was a fleet car me being 4th owner!!!

I could see it was driven hard, but wanted to save money and I did even with all the repairs. You just can't kill it even if you try. I'll recommend it to everyone.

The only two things I don't like are stiff sporty ride (Lexus is a lot softer) and resale value after 5 years is very poor for a luxury car.

I own a 2000 I30. Love my baby. Only problem is the Engine light. It is always coming on. It has got a little over 15k miles on it. But she is in great shape. When the light first came, I was told that it was an O2 sensor. So I had it replaced. Then it came back on and I was told to replace my TPS (throttle position sensor). So I had that replaced. Then the light came back on and I was told that one of my catalytic converter was bad. I did not replace that one because of the lack of funds at the time. Later on, the light went out by itself and when I took into the dealership, they told me that there was nothing wrong with my catalytic converter. You can imagine how appalled I was due to the fact that they told me I had to replace this expensive part in the first place. Thank God I that I could not afford it at the time.

Later, the light came back on and now this time it is supposedly my knock sensor. I am going to order the part myself and save almost $100. We will see if this fixes anything or if that Engine light is just destined to remain on.

I have this car for a little over 3 ½ years. Although the whole Engine light thing has been annoying and somewhat tiresome, it has been the only problem that I have had with this car. For a seven year old, 15,000 mile vehicle, I think that it has been performing rather well. The only other issue that I had to take care of was at about 12k miles, my right wheel bearing died on me and the car was very dangerous to drive. Other than that, it has been an excellent car. I am however very religious about my maintenance and service intervals. So that might have something to do with it.

I also have an Infiniti I30 2000 and have problems with the service engine light. I took it to the dealership at least 4 times and every time there was a new problem. They said they fixed the problems, but within a weeks time the light would come back on. I finally took it back a fifth time after the warranty was up and that is when I was told my ignition coils went bad and it would be $1100 to fix. I called around for the parts and they go for about $80 a piece and I needed to replace all 6 I bought the parts and got under the hood and changed them myself I saved over $600 but guess what after two weeks the light came back on. My advice would be go to someone you trust because you could be spending a lot of money to fix problems that at the end of the day will not fix the service engine light problem.

I also have an Infinti I30 2001 with 72000 miles on it. I have a "Service Engine Soon" light. It is intermittently off and on. Unfortunately when I went for emissions in VA it was on and they said the code is P0000.

I am not sure what that is? Looking at all the opinions here and some other websites, it seems it is useless to go to a mechanic and figure out what the problem is.

Is there a way to reset this light on this car?

I have an Infiniti I30 1998 and have been scouring the net to try and find some information about why I would have a blinking airbag light. It is unbelievable the amount of consumers that have had "blinking light" problems with their Infiniti's. To be a car that is placed in the "luxury" class and held at such high standards (not to mention the high sticker price) it amazes me how this has not been addressed. I am going to start locally with the paper, radio station and hometown news station. I beg and plead that the rest of my fellow "blinking light" Infiniti owners do the same. B/C if it isn't just the engine or airbag lights that have the glitches, but the actual parts themselves I worry what could happen. The number of people posting on the web about it makes the odds stacked against us too great for me. Thanks for your time.

Hi, I am the same guy who wrote a review earlier. I have 2000 I30 with 135000 miles on it.

I just would like to comment on the check engine light thing. I personally did not experience this problem. My check engine light only comes on when something is wrong with the car. Best advice would be – take the car to the biggest Infiniti dealership in your area, have them find the code and then take it to the local mechanic you trust to fix it. If you don’t have a good local mechanic, take your car to PepBoys or any other big car service that gives you some type of warranty. The usual Nissan problems do involve MAF sensor, Knock sensor and Oxygen sensor. These parts were not made to hold up for years. I think it is partially because of the Infiniti strategy – that’s how they help out their dealerships (otherwise they will be out of work!) and that’s how they get you as a driver to finally visit the service shop so that all the necessary maintenance can be performed on the vehicle.

In general, people must realize that ALL cars have their problems and that more expensive cars have more expensive repairs. I know a guy who bought a brand new 2007 Mercedes S550 and has had it in the shop 2 times already, one problem being a hydraulic fluid leak! People also have to realize that they must perform regular maintenance on the car ON TIME for the car to run smoothly. Most people don’t do that and wait until something breaks. Well, if you do that, then usually the way electronics works on modern cars – after one sensor goes bad, it can influence other parts of the car. For instance, bad MAF sensor can lead to tranny problems and Oxygen sensor can lead to the loss of power in the car since the throttle system is getting clogged.

If you open your manual or talk to Infiniti people you’ll see that every year you have to do smth. with your car. For instance, changing the fuel filter can help avoid Oxygen sensor problems. Coils which so many people complain about, is a part of regular tune-up. They have to be replaced when you change spark plugs and drive belts. Properly inflated tires will help with gas mileage and can help prevent brake problems since there is a strong bond between the braking pads force needed to stop the car, your speed and braking distance. If the tires are not properly inflated, your braking force will be bigger and your pads will wear out quicker, as well as the tire tread.

The last thing I’d like to say to those who have check engine light problem: make sure deal tells you exactly what the problem is and if (after the repair) it comes back all the time it’s a clear indication that the central computer’s cpu has to be replaced. You want to write to corporate Infiniti and ask them if they can show a sign of good will and cover it for you. Some luxury makers will do that if you write them. They usually stand behind their product, so if there is a major problem that doesn’t go away – corporate Infiniti should authorize the repair under their stand behind the product policy. The friend of mine had his central computer replaced on his 2001 BMW 3series. He was told it’s a common thing!!! Acura was changing tranny for free after too many people had problems with it. So, it’s worth a try, writing letters helps. I’ve done it myself many times (not on a car matter) and I got good results.

Hope this review helps.

I own a 2001 I30 with 43,000 thousand miles, recently purchased oxygen sensor at only Infiniti dealer in town for 216.00 dollars. Guess what, SES light turned itself off before I have had a chance to replace it. Great little car, I also own LS400 and RX300. Best to take it to a dealer for proper maintenance and fluids. There is no cheap way to care for motor vehicles properly. Being cheap will cost you in the long run.

I have a 2000 I30t Infiniti, which is giving me hell.

I replaced the ignition coil, then when I pulled the number 3 plug ignition wire out, the car shut off and will not keep running.

I finally got it back to where it was running rough. Idling there is no pulse on number 3 and 5 ignition coils. It's getting ground and constant 12 volts. The rest is getting pulse.

I jumped the wire direct from ECM - still no pulse.

I have a 2001 Infiniti I30, and I really love the ride and the look of the car. I just had a new computer and all new wiring done last month on the car; this ran 1239.00.

A week ago the alternator suddenly went out sucking all the juice from my battery. I had a new alternator and new battery installed at over 700.00. This included a 60.00 tow to dealership and over two hours labor.

Today I noticed the battery light icon came on and went off, then came on again. I was wondering what could possibly cause this. The dealership told me to bring it by, and they would check it out for me. They seem to think it just may be a loose connection or wire. Any opinions on this.

I can't imagine there being anything electrical the matter after having everything replaced recently. The only thing I can see is possibly a loose connection.

I have an I30t 2000 Infinity and the Sun Roof does not work. I cannot find the fuse to check if it is open. I checked the three fuse boxes under the hood and the one inside the passenger compartment. Any suggestions would be welcome on how to trouble shoot this or where the fuse may be hiding.
