Worst car ever made, ever owned.
Don't care what other people think, these things are tempermental piles of crap, one helluva poor excuse for a "sports car". People say there reliable if well maintained, which basically means devoting 3/4s of your life to the damn thing. If it had the 350 TPI engine I doubt if my review would be this poor, the lt1 is a tempermental, overheaty, misfire prone crap box of an engine. If you want an American car (which I wholeheartidly recommend) GM is great (go buick!!), but stick with 1967-1992 1998-2002 camaros and 'birds, avoid lt1s at all costs. the 3.8 engine is great though, my buick has the supercharged version and it runs unbeleivebly well.
Don't go to dealers!!! theyll run you in circles buying crap you don't need just to earn an extra buck, real enthusiasts work on there own cars!!
If you live in America, buy something made here, Plain and simple!
Well Well!!..what do you expect with a 120,000 miles sports car!?..Looks like you have taken a bite on a fisher's bait!! Did you check the car before buying it. when running hot with a 160 thermo. there is for sure something wrong with the engine. this car has probably been beaten to death, the seller knew and sold it. By the way I own 4 cars with LT1, 2 roadmaster, 1 formula and 1 trans am, besides their optispark problems they are great engines. And once you know how to fix them they are very reliable. Many cop cars 9C1, impala SS and buick roadmasters have many hundreds of thousands miles and still going very strong. 1998-up LS1 are not better only revving faster, and we'll see if on the long run they would last like some LT1 beaten cop cars I've seen. Maybe!! And if so, I will buy one cause like I previously said they are faster.
Okay, if my "sports car with 120k miles" sucked so bad please explain how a roadmaster or impala with "many thousands of miles" can still be kicking around after being driven by elderly people or being thrashed by overweight cops? The 9c1 impala is probably only able to withstand the heat generated by idling for many hours (as would be seen in a patrol car) because it uses iron heads/block combo, not the tempermental and warpage-prone aluminum head/iron block combo..oh, and even GMHTP proved that formula firebirds in pristine condition with 102kms are piles of crap, just read their beginning article on the formula project and the problems they had with the optispark... BUT I do admit that I love the look of the impala ss (just something about them...don't know why) and the roadmaster limited is a sleeper all its own due to the.6 second 0-60 faster it is than the impala or 9c1 caprice, and it seems that GM did a better job toughening the frame on the b-body cars, along with the suspension, tranny and drivetrain, they kinda just threw the f-bodies together helter-skelter if you ask me..
This car hasn't gave me any problems exept I had the clutch go out 3 times.
That car sounds like it was abused. Cracked head maybe? That would explain the over-heating as well. Mine has 251,000 miles (original engine, never rebuilt, 2nd tranny) and will still smoke the tires. It never over heats and has plenty of power to spare.
I just bought a 1994 Lt1 Camaro. with 137K miles SMoked those tires so good and they were 285's R17's.
All it had was a Jet Computer Addon. It blew the tranny first Week I bought it. big deal. when I bought it, It was starting to slip. Engine still runs strong. I blew away a Few Stangs Before I killed the Tranny.
I prefer Lt1 over Ls1. And Btw It never overheated Once.
If Your heads are cracked. Put some boiler Sealer In that motor and it will seal the Leak ;) Every Mechanic does that and charges you for a Used head.
