2000 Opel Astra CDE from South Africa - Comments

17th Dec 2000, 14:32

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Water in the right front foglamp - fixed by dealer (3 years or 100,000 km's warranty).

Nothing else.

General comments?

Excellent roadholding and cornering ability. Much better than the old Astra.

Get's 6.5 to 7.8 liters per 100km's @ 120km's/hour and it is still new (3896 km's)!

Very comfortable to drive, lots of room for passengers. Excellent Philips CD player as standard (6 speaker system) as well as a fantastic air conditioner (again a better system than the old Astra). Radio/CD player controls on the steering wheel are a nice touch.

New 1600 16v Ecotec motor is a dream. Pulls much better than the old 8 valve motor at low rev's. Gearbox extremely smooth. (Like a 1981 VW Passat used to be!)

Overall an excellent motorcar, much refined and a joy to own. And it is much cheaper in South Africa (1800.00 pounds) than the Volkswagen Jetta 1600 (Bora in Europe).

Well done Opel !

I agree with you on this. I also have a 1.6 CDE Classic and was definately good value for money. The only problem I have is squeaking brakes. :)

I bought a used Opel Astra Classic CDE (2000 model) with 85 000 kilometers on the clock. I had so many problems, are the following normal? Oil leak, seals where replaced after much trouble. Jerking at 1500 ref's? Possible problem, clips on the injectors that is broken. (true?) Clutch broke the other day. The car is in good shape, but why all the mechanical problems? I would like some help.

My Opel is an absolute joy, but the engine just switches off (once at 120km/h). The fan only comes on when the interior is cool. A click sound comes from the front wheels when the brakes are engaged. (dealer says not to worry the car will indicate if the brakes need replacing) What worries me is that the engine just switching off may be associated with the computer and the dealers don't seem interested in solving the problem.

I always loved Opel. I owned a 1997 Opel Astra 160IE before I decided to buy me the 2000 Opel Astra 1.6 16valve classic and I could not have made a better choice in a car if I mush say so myself. The car drives like a dream compare to the 160IE. The only problem I have is the motor in the Power Steering cylinder still runs for a second or so and it does grab your attention and it makes you think the worse. The brakes is also very noisy. I love Opel that much that I do my best to convince my friends to buy Opel as well.

I have bought myself the 1.6 cde astra what a lovely car to drive! but I must say its just done 200000km and I've had to redo the engine, its hard to find anybody that will work on this engine, they say its very difficult to fix, its been done twice in 2 months as the first one collapsed.

But in general I love this car and hope to have it for a while

I am not at all pleased with my Opel Astra caravan 2000. The motor in the power steering is broken and will cost me as much as I paid for the car. Also the engine is not very good and the body is fragile. I will not buy an Opel in the future - never again.

I want to find out if anyone has tried to imrpove the std performance on the Opel Astra 1.6 CDE (2002 model).

It is rather sluggish, especially at low speed/gears.

It always has been since new.

Looking for an economical way of improving performance & fuel efficiency as well.

Thanks.

I am driving an Opel Astra 1800. Good balance on the road, very fast etc. but sometimes jerky. It is not the clutch, it is not timing, it is not a filthy petrol filter. What can it be? It is rather frustrating in heavy traffic.

Thanks!! I will buy the same car again, but without that one problem!!

I've bought my Astra 1.6 CDE 2000 model in 2005 and its been a dream to drive and it has currently just over 200,000km's on the clock and still going strong. I have not even touch the engine yet because there has been no need to do so.

Only 2 things that's a bit of a problem for me, (1) squeaky brakes and (2) front fogged headlights. Other than these 2 issues, it a good family car as well.

Julian.
