1988 Dodge 4x4 engine stops running ever so often, without notice. Then it will not re-start for awhile (periods vary).
Have replaced fuel filter several times and problem continues.
Any thoughts of why this occurs?
I also tend to replace steering parts and u- joints.
I have a 1985 Ramcharger, and used to have the same problem. The ignition systems are a little different between the years, but maybe I have some suggestions. If it cuts out while running, you might try replacing the magnetic pickup in the distributor. The part inside gets hot from the engine heat and shorts out, and it won't start until it cools back down. Also try unplugging the dual plug from the distributor, and cleaning the contacts; then tie it up off the intake manifold where it is probably resting. It's the same deal--resting on the hot engine, the rubber coated plug expands, and when it cools off everything contracts and then there is too much resistance in the wire to allow the signal from the electronic control module to tell the distributor to fire. Also check the fusible link, on the driver's side fender, to make sure that the wires aren't corroded; if the fusible link is broken, not only will the engine die or not start, but the lights and other accessories will likely die at the same time. A Hayne's Manual would be a valuable investment.
