Idles roughly on start up for a few seconds! so far I have not heard pf one that don't. so it's a very common problem.
A very nice looking car. my car has a/c which means I get 135bhp instead of 115.cost me £2500 be careful of any under £2000 as I looked at over 10 gti's befor I bought my one. they are quite juicy about 200 miles to the tank/£40.my last car was a 1990 escort rs turbo and this car is so much better, looks better, drives better, speed wise they are identical 0 - 60 with the gti being a bit faster top end 140mph on the clock so about 128 in the real world, and I'm glad to have power steering which the rs don't have!tried the rs 2000 but was not in pressed looked the same and could not tell the difference speed wise! so I'm saving for an escort cosworth! rich.
You don't get more power with aircon installed. you probably know as I do that using aircon takes some performance away, but the manufacturer doesn't offer more power to compensate for this. so unless you have had the car modified (i.e. cams, headwork) then you will still have 115hp.
The rs2000 came in two variants 2wd and 4wd, the 4wd is slower due to the added weight of the running gear, but has far superior handling, both however would wipe the floor with a gti, so I think you may be mistaken!
I have a 93 mk5 RS 2000. It's in a totally different league to a GTi. You would get 125mph flat out with a force 10 wind behind you if you're lucky in a GTi; 0-60 about 9s also. It's just a run of the mill Escort with a GTi badge on it...

The GTi is a XR3 wannabe.
The RS2000; well the RS is the one. I've had a 4wd and a 2wd with A/C, and without. Did not turn it on mind you.
The GTi is an Si with bits on the bumpers and sills.
I work for Ford and have for 14 years; that's all the GTi is.
Sorry for bursting your bubble.
I owned a 1993 1.8 xr3i 130bhp and it would wipe the floor with the gti. It was the best car I've ever owned, and if some drunk hadn't hit me in the rear and written it off, I would still be driving it now! As for you saying you only get 200miles to a full tank in the gti; do you ever get out of 2nd gear?
