"Cheap and cheery - only the best people drive Unos"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Replaced Fuel Pump, water pump, andbrake master cylinder. Difficult starting at one stage which was due to aged dizzie cap and rotor. Not much $$$ to Remedy.

General comments?

Bought this Uno to replace my first one which was getting scruffy, and it had the sunroof and felt much tighter. 40 thousand ks on it still does. Anyone who says these cars aren't built to last is talking bullpucky. Mechanically these cars are bulletproof, and quite rugged too. One doesn't need to think hard to recall a collision between an Uno and an S Class Mercedes. The Uno won that one, but not so good for the S Class occupants. Mine drives very well indeed, uses no oil, and is a willing performer when needed.

Great in the city, great on motorways, It perhaps loses composure when some bumps are thrown into the mix, but the steering is well weighted, communicative and dead accurate. Surprisingly fun to drive in gravel where perhaps the pizza-cutter 155 section tyres carve through the corners nicely. Interior is cavernous - well a small cave, with the seats folded down you can get a fair bit of gear in. It suits me and my lifestyle, and I'm a big man.

So a good all rounder then. Id recommend the 70 which has the plush interior and extra fruit like lecky windows, central locking and tacho - all Italian cars need a tacho. A good one will see 180 kph if you really push it, but remember not to hit anything at that speed as I suspect that the design predates crumple zones and passenger safety cells. Alas Numero Due Uno is starting to get the rust into it due (too) I might seek out a series II model as a replacement as these cars have a front sway bar which would undoubtedly tidy up the handling. Better interiors too, but again they rust. Then again a respray and I'm sure mine will see 200 ks and beyond...

FIAT Uno the geat!

I have one UNO MILLE SX (5 doors) year 1997.

It's still working very well, showing the excellence of its dependable project, by the FIAT engineers and also the intelligent design from the "master" Giorgetto Giugiaro.

The car is compact, but big inside carrying almost every things from small boxes to furniture. I have experience due my time as a lamp salesman (transporting many boxes) and as Skydiver and Para glider pilot, travelling a lot, with a "full chunk" with parachutes bags and Para gliders bags (bigger and heavier than the first one) plus passengers.

It's comfortable for tall persons, and old persons with difficult of dislocations and entry in small cars.

Has a good performance on the streets and roads, and also does a good job to climb hills to fly, despite its 1.0 liter engine.

About the economy, no comments. It goes further!

My car has 164.000..Km, in other words, travel four times around the world with only three malfunctions.

Two alternator problems in 2001 and 2006, and a "wet clutch" during a heavy rain day in Rio this year, when I try to cross a flood street. OK, I reach the limit, but I can return to my house slowly, but safely.

This is the car.

Just do the regular maintenance and it goes ahead.

I'm planning to buy a new one, with FLEX FIRE engine and the higher suspension, increasing the ground clearance, giving more flexibility on unpaved roads.

In conclusion: Good, dependable, efficient and cheap.
