My transmission began acting up at 44,000miles. I took it in for service and they told me everything was fine. At 51,000 miles the transmission went totally bad and I took the car back in for service and Jaguar is saying that it is not their problem and they want to charge me 6,000 dollars for repairs at my cost. They are refusing to stand behind their car because they say the warranty expired at 50,000 miles. The service is very nasty now.
I thought Jaguar stood for quality. The car is very beautiful.
I am having the same transmission problem with my S-Type Jag. It started before 50K miles, but the computer did not display warning codes. When it did show codes, the car had 54K miles on it. The Jag manufacturer (after speaking with two reps) said "when it's over, it's over!" (meaning the warranty). I am truly disappointed with the car. I love the way it looks, but cannot keep it running. I am in my 8th week of renting a car. Hopefully, one more week and I will have my car back. A reputable transmission dealer is replacing my transmission and he told me that many S-Types are in transmission shops across the nation with the same problem.
Just before the transmission failed, the Jag dealer finally found where the horrible burned oil smell was coming from. My coils were leaking oil on my spark plugs. Oh, by the way, this happened just after the 50K mile warranty expired. However, a week and $800 later, it was repaired.
My experience with Jag reps was not pleasant. I believe they could learn a little more about what customer service is. Yes, the Jag is an exotic, beautiful car, but you don't see many on the road. In my opinion, poor quality and service and a manufacturer who will not stand behind their product is the reason.
I only have one thing to say about all this. When it's over, it's over!!! I will never own another Jag!!!
I find it very strange that the majority of major issues occurred with V8 models in the 2000 and 2001 model years. I am hoping to purchase a 2001 or 2002 model in the next few months, and I am planning to go with the S-Type 3.0 for this very reason. Wish me luck!
I just recently purchased a 2000 Jaguar S type with 44k mmiles on it. In the past month I have owned it, I had to replace sway bar (suspesion) links and or bushings, replace a air conditioning hose, replace two coils, spark plugs and valve cover gaskets. (oil leaking on them). I am also concerned with the transmission as I think it is slipping and would like to hear more from others in detail about the transmission problems they have experianced. My Jaguar is out of warranty as well, not due to mileage, but in-service date.
I brought in a perfect 2000 Jaguar S type to the dealer service center for the 40,000 mile check. The first day they called & said it needed new brake pads at a cost of $540. Fine, that can happen to anyone. The second day they called & said it needed a new power steering pump, they found a leak, at a cost $840. The 3rd day they called & said when they took it for a road test the default light went on & that means I need a new transmission at a cost of $6000.!!! The car has only 41,000 miles & when I brought it to them the transmission wasn't slipping or giving me any trouble what so ever. The warranty was up in March of 2004. After weeks of complaints & letters Jaguar agrees to pay 1/3, the dealer a 1/3 & the last 1/3 I have to pay. It all doesn't make sense to me for the car was perfectly healthy. This is my 4th Jag & I have never needed a transmission. One Jag I drove 110,000 miles before trading it in on this S type. If anyone is interested in a class action suit concerning the transmission on the 2000S let me know.
I am the second owner of a 1999 manufactured, 2000 first registered Jaguar 3.0 litre V6 SE 'S' Type. This is my third Jaguar. On the positive side, the performance is excellent with a very smooth and quiet engine, fuel consumption very good, on long journeys around 9.5 litres/100 Km, and around town about 10.3 litres/100 km. It is quiet, comfortable and very pretty. After one year and 25,000 kms, it now has 67,000 kms and so far I have replaced front and rear pads, not unusual; front discs at 48,000 km, slightly surprising; rear window winder mechanism at 55,000 km, also surprising; and had an oil leak from the power steering fixed by replacing an oil seal and a hose. My only real complaint, at least so far, is that there is no CD ROM for the navigation system that covers Northern Ireland & the Irish Republic.
Where in God's name did you hear that Jaguar stood for quality? I thought people bought them because they were twee and old world, and as such put up with the inevitable unwelcome side of ownership. The big problem is that it is built in Birmingham (West Midlands that is) and the workforce in Birmingham is nothing short of communist, and before anyone writes in complaining, I live in Birmingham: so I know!
I bought my 2000 S-Type Jag in January, 2004. I LOVED my car until I too, experienced the unrepairable problem of not being able to get it out of PARK if I happen to park on the slightest incline. My first "repair" was $500.00 and it worked for about 25,000 miles. It is now happening again! $900 later and no fix in sight. The dealer explained that there is no repair available and that the fix I had done will work for 20-25000 miles, and after that I would have to do it again. In case you are having this problem, remember to ALWAYS use your parking brake and put it into gear before disengaging the brake. I want another Jag, but only an "03, 04 or 05. According to the dealer, the problem was rectified. DO NOT BUY A 2000 S TYPE!!!
I experienced the same problem this past weekend when I was parked on a slight incline and my 2000 S Type would not go into gear. I had to call Triple A for a tow truck with a dolley to lift the car from the rear to move the gear shift. After the tow truck lifted the car I was able to go in reverse. He said the gear locks up when you don't put the emergency brake on first. The tow truck driver said to put the emergency brake on first before putting the gear into park.
I too have a 2000 Jaguar S Type model and my transmission just went out and of course my warranty has expired and it will cost me roughly $6000 to repair. I am seriously considering filing a class action suit against Jaguar because this seems to be a worldwide unresolved problem. So if anyone is interested, please email me at Leandrebr@aol.com.
Wow, I just bought myself the 2000 S-Type 44k miles. I did get the 5 year warranty on it, but now I am scared of all the problems; I may have down the road. I guess now I know why the dealer told me to get the 5 year warranty on the car. Has anyone have no problems with this car?
I have a 2000 S-Type. I have owned it for 1 1/2 yrs. Several problems I am having are: the engine idles rough, and tends to jerk when driven (ie: shifting), The dealer says it's water in the gas. I have used so many bottles of Iso-Heet, you think the problem would be corrected, but it's not. Also, the engine/transmission light comes on sporadically, does this mean the trans is going out? The passenger window mechanism is also going out, can't open or shut it. Of course, I am out of warranty at 50,500 miles. Any suggestions?
We just bought a 2000 S-Type on August 24, 2005. It was beautiful, and felt so smooth when we drove it. I kid you not, on the way home from the dealer, the transmission started slipping as I was driving up a hill. I got so scared, I flashed my brights at my boyfriend who was driving in front of me, and made him drive it home, while I drove his car. The dealer (not a Jag dealer) offered to replace the transmission. They replaced it with a rebuilt transmission, that had 34,000 miles on it. We just got the car back 2 days ago (September 12th,2005) and as I was driving today, the car didn't want to go into second or third gear of this automatic transmission. I tried putting it in the "S" mode. Didn't help. I tried just having it in the "D" mode, it got worse as I was driving. Then I put it in the "4" mode, and it was a little better. The dealer felt badly that we have had nothing, but trouble with the car. And to top it off, I can't see any warning messages on the dash board because it constantly says "boot open". But the trunk is NOT open. We did buy an extended warranty. We have three years with it. But I think I will need to start saving for a rental car, because I don't get to drive it very often. I would appreciate any comments from people who have had the same problem, and what was done to fix it. Maybe the dealers here in Southern California don't know what to look for with this kind of problem. I am so upset over this, and don't know where to turn. lkelly@usmilitary.tv.
My 2000 S Type Jaguar has had the "parking on incline problem", It took 3 times for me to figure out- don't park on an incline. Use the emergency brake, then pray.
The transmission was doing some slipping before the 50,000 magic mileage date, now at 75,000 it is kaput! Yes, the estimate is $6,000 for replacement. Yes, I am not happy!
Drove Toyota's for 20 years, I was married to a Reliability Engineering Manager, he bought me this Jag, my car of choice, when he was in the last stages of a terminal illness.
I was driving a restored Jaguar, (more or less) when I met him, he teased me about my choice of styling over performance and reliability. Never said I couldn't have one, but I would have to care for it myself.
I am gathering information and evidence on this model car. I think Jaguar is ignoring a systemic problem that is going to hurt their future sales. I have to think long and hard about what car I will be driving next. Fortunately I still have the 94 Camry wagon with 136,000 miles and the original transmission.
I would be interested in how some owners solved this problem.

I purchased a 2000 S-Type V8 about 2 years ago. It had 21k on it at that time. Fortunately for me, it came with the Jaguar extended warranty. The car now has 45k miles. Within a year of buying the car, the transmission had to be replaced. I also had to have the driver's side seat motor replaced twice, the driver's side power window replaced twice, the steering pump, the steering column, both coils, and it's now back in the shop for another transmission.
I'm quite sure that Jaguar knows the transmission is a problem, but it's very unlikely they will do anything to correct it. They will way the cost of doing the right thing against the cost of doing nothing and they'll go with which ever is cheaper. Unless customers stand together and put economic pressure on them (most likely through a class action suit), consumers will get no satisfaction. Sad, but true.
