"Best high-end SUV on the market, hands down"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The service 4x4 indicator light came on at 10 000 km, but didn't come back on again later. It has still not come back on.

Otherwise, nothing to note.

General comments?

I recently went to Florida from Ontario with this SUV, which my Dad bought himself. This was the first serious trip with the car. I have to say that it was the most comfortable ride ever. We hit some serious flakes north of Syracuse and switched it to 4x4 hi and it handled it like nothing. This thing has all the bells and whistles that enhance the driving experience. The stereo, leather seats, heated seats, multi adjustable power seats...etc. Even in the middle row, I found it comfortable except one complaint about poor road visibility. You have to look down to see the road ahead, otherwise you see the hood of the truck. This may not bother anybody else however. Another gripe I have about it, this is with every SUV, is the mileage. The best we got on the trip was 21 mpg. This obviously accounted for the most expensive part of the trip. We should have taken my KIA down and gotten twice the mileage; but then again it wouldn't have been half as comfortable.

I think the ON STAR is cool, but we never would need it except for the first aid bit or if the car gets stolen. We'll see if my dad renews in a year. I'm guessing not.

Otherwise a good buy for SUV types

Hey, it's me who wrote the original comment. I have a few updates.

Over the past few months, I think every trouble icon on the dash has had a chance at blinking, each of which has required a trip to the dealer. One episode involved the low engine power light coming on which necessitated driving back 50km at 20km/h. Another trip involved changing of the fan clutch. You get the point. The truck has been into the dealer 5 or 6 times since about a year, each requiring part changes and expensive (warranty covered) work. I think the dealership is praying until 60000km when the warranty is up and we're left with this lemon to fix ourselves. Buyer beware of the 2003 Envoys. If anybody else has had these problems with their Envoys, I'd be interested in hearing about them.

I just noticed this last comment and wanted to let the owner know that if a recurring problem shows up again AFTER the warranty is out the manufacturer is still obligated by law to repair the problem. Be sure to DOCUMENT your complaints (in writing), keeping the receipts from the dealership when you take the car in. Also write a letter stating your concerns and send it via REGISTERED MAIL to the dealership general manager or service manager, keeping a copy for your records as well as the proof of receipt from the dealership. My brother encountered a knock in the engine of his Pontiac and complained to the dealership. The engine failed after the warranty was out, but because he had reported the problem during the warranty period GM installed a new engine at no charge. GM is usually very good at taking care of its customers, and although there are many crooked dealerships out there, many are very concerned with keeping their customers business. Our Pontiac/GMC dealership is great and we have always been taken care of very well. They even repaired a minor problem on our Envoy at 40,000 miles at no charge. That kind of service keeps us loyal to GM products. I hope you get your Envoy taken care of. Ours has been one of the best vehicles we have ever owned.

We have a 2003 Envoy that I had some concerns about early on due to things I had heard about computer related problems. I talked with the service manager at our local GMC dealership about these concerns before we bought our car. He explained that many dealer service departments have poorly trained personnel who don't know how to handle these (usually minor) problems when they occur. He further stated that our local dealership had specially trained people who knew what they were doing. This has proven to be true in our case. We have not had a single problem with our Envoy, and after nearly 60,000 miles it still performs flawlessly and gets an incredible 24 mpg on trips. We love everything about this car and will most certainly replace it with another one when it hits 200,000 miles or so.

I have a 2003 Envoy XL just hit 30K. Now I have a service engine soon light illuminated. Autozone diagnosed as Emission Control System leak. Anyone ran into this one? The thing seems to be running fine. Just wondering if it is one of those factory preset lights to get cash out of my pocket.

I had this problem with the check engine light too. It was a clogged vent hole in the gas cap. It really won't hurt anything (except making that stupid, too-sensitive light come on) but it's an easy and cheap fix. You can just replace the fuel cap.

Check engine soon light happened to my wife and they said it was the gas cap, something about it wasn't put on tight before she started the car, light came on again and this time they found a leaking gas tank problem. They repaired it and so far no problems.

The service engine soon light is related to a problem in the design of the fuel tank. There is a weld that fails where the filling nozzle is attached to the gas tank. It does leak fumes and gas. There is a TSB on the 2002 models. NHTSA Office of Defect Investigations has launched an investigation into this problem which occurs in the 2002 and 2003 Trailblazer EXT and the GMC Envoy XL. If the Service Engine Soon light is on please have it checked out immediately.

I just picked up my 03 Envoy XL from the dealership Friday with the following repairs being done: The blower motor was staying on after the vehicle was shut off and draining my battery. The problem was a bad module. And the check engine light was staying on and a fuel smell coming from the back of the vehicle. The problem was a crack in the fuel tank.

The repair bill cost me $1291.00 due to being out of warranty. The vehicle has been good, my suggestion is to purchase the extended warranty. If I would have it would have paid for itself...

Would like to see feedback on how to get this fuel tank problem out in the open, it seems like its time to declare a recall...

Our GMC 03 Envoy XL just shut down on us.

We took it out for Lunch, when we came back, the car would not start. The wierd thing is all the panel instruments went haywire, the rpm indicator went to max and remained stuck there, the speed gauge went to 20 miles..etc, even after I tool the key out off the ignition.

When I put the key back in to try again, the key got stuck inside and would not come out, all the panel gauges were still stuck at different levels of activity. All you could hear was a constant clicking sound.

We finally had to get the tow truck to tow it to the dealership.. its been a full day and they have no idea what the problem is. Has anyone else had such an issue before?

We have a 2003 Envoy XL with 55k miles on it. It runs great. The only problem we've had is the gas cap. The "check engine" light comes on because the gas cap is not making a tight seal. We're on our 3rd gas cap in less than 3 years. Poor design, and potentially a safety hazard as well.

Anyone knows where I can buy a metal gas cap that fits???

I had the same problem with my truck not starting the gauges going haywire. the symptoms didn't seem to fit a bad alternator, but my lights had been flickering before this happened and my mechanic decided to try replacing the alternator. has been 2 months and the problem hasn't come back.

I had the same issue with the gauges going haywire on my Envoy. I brought it in and they said that the computer was stuck at 60MPH. I believe that they had to reset the computer.

I have 2003 Envoy and since I bough it I have nothing, but problems the first thing was the crack on the fuel tank, well now there is a recall for it after 4 years, second the clutch for the fan went out, bought it, replaced it; it was not an easy job. Third the resistance and the blower motor for the A/C are faulty for the speed 5, the blower motor only work from 1-4 speed. Fourth Now my vehicles is overheating it might be the thermostat because it came out with a code saying the temp in the engine and the radiator was not the same. My vehicle only have like 55000 miles. I wonder how many more things are going to break in this vehicle.

2003 EnvoyXL---Where do I begin----

My file folder is 5" thick with service orders from the dealer. Everything from transmission leaks to fan clutch to right rear brake light.

I have 55,000 miles on this vehicle and yes it is very comfortable to drive, but with the service problems I have had would never buy another one. Two days ago I took it to my local mechanic to get the tires rotated and balanced and while it was there he found that my serpentine belt was cracked and my rear axle was leaking grease and had ruined my emergency brake.
