"Cadillac: The Standard Of The World"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing Yet, mind you I have owned it 9 days, but it seems like it will last me a long time yet!

Oh wait, the driver's side rear window doesn't roll down, its 12 years old, big deal.

General comments?

I bought this car after I had sold my 1995 Buick Roadmaster (I wrote a review on this site, look up the 1995 buick roadmaster, its the one that says "The Perfect Sleeper") The Roadmaster and the Sedan deVille are both large american luxo liners. but the Caddy is smaller, but it has 5 inches more rear legroom than the Roadmaster, it rides more like a cloud, yet it handles better.

The 4.9 Liter V8 is a wonderful motor, powerful, reasonably fuel efficent, reliable and it sounds really cool. It's got a sound that's like a '60's big block muscle car except it's hushed quite a bit. The road tests Car and Driver did back in the May 1991 issue state that the car goes 0-60 in 8.4 and the 1/4 mile in 16.5. These cars were the most powerful american luxury cars in 1991-92 then the northstar came out in 1993 and the 4.9 was second. Anyways, these cars have more than enough power, most of the power is low end torque. The low end torque is reminicent of the 350LT1, just the 4.9 doesn't have the top end power that the LT1 had. It does good burnouts too :)!! But under full throttle at lower speeds, it does show a bit of torque steer, but it's nothing really bad.

The interior is really nice also, it's a very simple dashboard with a 85MPH horizontal speedometer, the dashboard is extremely horizontal, simple, but not basic. The speedometer is the only typical gauge on the cluster. the fuel gauge is a digital display that says the # of gallons left, (which is good because the gauge in the roadmaster was miscalculated-- it would go way past F when full) all the other info that you would need guages for is an idiot light) my favorite feature is the Fuel Data Center, which tells you AVG MPG, INST MPG, Range, Fuel Used, and your oil life indicator-- like 68% left. The Electonic Climate Control is a great feature also, still works great, but you can't push a button to tell it where to put the air (dash, floor, mix etc) I just leave it in auto or econ all the time. It's got defrog front and rear too, the outside mirrors are heated when you push rear defog. The Radio sounds great with it's 5 way equalizer, but it's only a cassette so that will be coming out.

Also, the dashboard and door panels aren't built of the typical hard plastic like every other GM brand. They're built of this flexible and soft vinyl like material. You can really tell which brand GM puts all of they're development money into in 1992.

And if you hold down the OFF and WARMER buttons on the Electronic Climate Control, it will go into diagnostic mode, which gives you vital info like RPM, Digital Speed, Battery Volts, among many others, use the lower and higher fan speed buttons to access this info. It's very genious also.

The seats are very comfortable, they're the kind of seats you just sink into when you get in the car and seeing as how they're velour, they're never very cold, just when it's below 10 degrees, the seats are firm before the car warms up inside. There is a opening armrest with cupholders in the front, but no opening armrest/ cupholders in the rear. The front seats are 6 way power with manual recliners. There is a opening compartment on the rear shelf infront of the upper brake light, very ingenious, and on the roof of the car, in the very center, in the back are two red lights that turn on when your signal is on, or when your brake lights are on or when your tail lights are on, they have indicator lights for the headlights, turn signals, and high beams on the front fenders. Very clever!!

The exterior is very conservativly designed. It's a very clean design, with just the right amount of chrome, it looks quite contemporary and not so gaudy like older caddys, overall, I have to say this is my favorite design for any Cadillac, ever. I like how it doesn't look as big as any of the DeVilles made after 1993.

Most kids at school never understand why I would want a Cadillac, but I tell them They're the best american car period and one of the best in the world with AUDI, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes Benz, They used to be, and hopefully will be soon again the car everyone dreams to own. Cadillac is a symbol of class and style, not to mention it's durable, and very well designed, do yourself a favor and get one soon. My only real complaints are that it needs 91 Octane, and that the gas tank is too small for a V8 (18 gallons, my roadmaster had 23, this car should have a 20 gallon tank).

Now that I own one, I can truly understand what all the hubbub is about, Cadillacs are the standard of the world.

You must change cars a lot, you didn't keep the Roadmaster for very long at all.

And Cadillacs have had those indicators for the brake lights and on the front fender since about, oh the mid '70's or so.

I lost my beloved wife of 31 years in one of these deathtraps!! In November 1994, my wife Idie was travelling westbound on I-30 outside of Dallas when for no apparent reason, the engine went wide-open! She crossed the median and 3 lanes of traffic until colliding with a LPG tanker head-on! It took nearly 3 hours to put out the fire. Dallas DPS officers said that they had seen other wrecks like hers in 92 Cadillacs. Tried to sue GM, case was dismissed, and I lost my wife and my life thanks to these soulless monsters. Think before you buy one.

I agree with the above comment. Cadillacs always have been, and always will be, absolute garbage. Buy a Lexus or an Acura instead. Not only are they independent manufacturers, but they make some of the highest quality, and longest lasting vehicles in the world. They are the true standard of the world.

Lexus? Independent manufacturer? Hah, don't make me laugh. Anyone with half a brain knows that Lexus is owned by Toyota, the world's 2nd largest automobile manufacturer (next to GM ofcourse). And on that subject not only are they outrageously expensive to maintain (and less reliable than Cadillacs), the new models are butt-ugly (but that's just my opinion.

Also, as a rule of thumb most cars made in the early 90s are pretty damn crappy. The cars of the early 90s were not only simple clones of each other, but were also useless little boxes, which is one somebody like the above poster will drive a 1992 Ford Escort around the block, hate it, and decide that he's an authority on his perceived crappiness of all domestic cars in general.

Another note:

The other poster above is full of crap. Look up the crash ratings of a 1993 deVille (which is the same as a 93) Well, what do you know, *****.

As for the other poster, Cadillacs WERE crap from 1979 (the V4-6-8/Diesel fiasco, the TH-4100 mess, the Cimarron) -1993 (the introduction of the Northstar on regular vehicles). Toyotas and the like were complete and utter garbage from their inception in the 70s up to the mid 80s. Early Hondas and Toyotas were ugly, small, poorly made, poorly powered, easily rusting junkheaps. Their only selling point was fuel efficiency. Today Hondas are exactly the same as every other vehicle on the road and Toyotas are just ugly, while Cadillacs are one of the few noteworty new vehicles.

Hi, I am the one who wrote this review back in december, and I have a new opinion of this automobile and Cadillac, and most of GM.

My Overall view after 6 months of owning this car is:

A beautifiul car, gorgeous interior, very comfortable, quiet with a great stereo, the 4.9 liter V8 is a motor that creates a great amount of power, but it's a terrible motor that I would not recommend to anyone. For example (mine leaks coolant from a hole in the side of the block, has a main bearing knock, and has a bad injector in cylinder #5 which wouldn't be so bad, except I'm pretty sure I can't replace one injector, I have to replace all 8) this motor is very difficult to work on, and cadillac seems to design their things so it CAN'T be cheap to fix. It seems Cadillac has been generally flawed since the late '70s and GM and Cadillac can't design a great, troublefree engine anymore. (with some exceptions, 3800V6, 350V8) I'm gonna sell this car for under $2,000 and buy a Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency Elite or a Honda Accord Coupe!

Alright, its me again, the one who wrote this comment and the owner of this car. I've owned this car for 9 months now and I give it a 8/10. I've changed my opinion of this fine beast because its been a very reliable car for me, with the exception of the one fuel injector (I did only have to replace one) I've got 107k miles on it now, and I am very satisfied with this car, the only problems I have with it are parts of the design. For instance, I prefer RWD, no big deal though, and I think its kind of dumb how hard it is to service the engine / transaxle (I hate transverse V8's) and parts/ gas are expensive for an 18 year old, but oh well its the price you pay. This motor must be monitored 2x weekly due to it being somewhat high maintenance. You CANNOT overheat this motor (due to the block being aluminium and the heads are cast iron, which means they don't heat/ cool at the same rate which can be a big problem), if you do overheat it, most likely you're gonna be buying a new motor or car. SO check the coolant 2x a week, and be sure to add these pellets that help stop leaks when you change the coolant. Oh and it goes thru about a quart of oil every 3k miles, not a big deal.

So all in all: a great car, just take great care of it, and monitor it closely!

I have owned my 92 deville for 7 months and I absolutely love it. my only problem with the car is the gas mileage (it sucks). The car rides like it on water it's a wonderful ride. My car has 177k on it and its still running like a top. you keep it serviced and there is no problems at all!!!

My 92 Cadillac is the best car I've ever owned. It has 207k miles on it and still is running like new. The gas is expensive, but the ride is nice, it just floats along the road. It still looks nice inside and out.

Whenever I hear a story of some oldster's car suddenly accelerating at full-power (until it inevitably crashes), I'm reminded of my "french-fry black-out" in my 1984 Olds '98 Regency Brougham. Basically, I'm eating some fries which didn't have enough salt or oil on them, and swallowed them "dry". They jammed up in my esophagus, and the bulge apparently pressed a nerve cluster or artery. I blacked out, and when I come to, my front bumper is against a tree, and my foot is on the floor and a rooster-tail of dirt is blasting away under the drive wheel. Fortunately, I'd only been going about 10mph at the time, only went a few feet off the road, and the car wasn't damaged.

This may also explain why none of these cases ever seem to resolve themselves with the person pulling their automatic lever down to 1st gear.

Bought a 93 deville cheap a few months ago. My first Caddy, and I can't believe how sweet this car is to drive! Had to change the starter due to a battery draining problem and has an oil leak, ABS light, power antennas broken, and other stuff, but this car accelerates, and drives unlike any car I've ever driven. I've always thought of caddy`s as old peoples cars, heavy, and lumbering up the street. This car doesn't lumber, its peppy and responsive! I'm Totally happy with this car. Its going to get some tender loving care! hope to have it for a long time :)

I also have a 1992 Cadillac Deville. I've had it for almost two years, and I have only changed the water pump, and put new air shocks in it. It's got 214,000 miles on it, and runs like a champ! And yes, this car will burn the front tires right off. It does suck down the gas though, that is my only complaint about it.

Well, I am excited. I have just agreed to purchase a 1992 with a custom Landau roof, garage kept with 43,000 miles! It looks almost brand-new and I can't wait to own her. I'll let you know how it goes!!! The asking price was excellent!

Just got a 92 caddy deville for $5000 with only 67,OOO miles. Runs like a dream and has great power. I shudder when I watch the gas tank go from 60 to 0 in 3.8 seconds, but other than that its not to shabby. I've only had it for a couple days though...

Well I can only say that these Caddy's are very comfy and reliable cars. I own a De ville 1991 which hasn't let me down yet.

Maintenance? All cars need maintenance. Any car you take good care of will take good care of you.

My friends love my car, especially when we hit the town three sitting up front three in back and still enough space to have a good time with its excellent stereo blasting.

I will not sell it ever.

True it does need quite some gas, but only a lot if you put the pedal to the metal. Drive smooth and consume less. (like all cars)

You overheated one buddy...?... you must have been racing too much. It's a luxury car, not a race car. Use its power sparingly and the car will last a long time.

For the gentleman that lost his wife in one, I am very sorry to hear this. But this never happens, and if it should to any of you, throw the car in neutral, and as a last resort, cut the engine (remember you lose lots of steering control and braking power once you cut the engine).

And one must admit they are really safe. What concerns involvement in a collision as they are hard as a rock all around, especially in the front with that engine protecting you. Air bags and all. All around great car.

Oh, and I am not an American, so for all of them out there trash talking these fine vehicles... shame on you.

Regards

German guy from Aruba
