I agree that the Chevette should make a comeback. For the most part it was a very reliable car and quite cheap. A few modern things could be added to make it better, such as better brakes. A cheap car like this would be perfect for a new driver to buy.
Chevettes are the most awesome car ever!
Even though some people are mean to them they still never stop loving you back.
I think that a lot of people above me don't know what they are talking about. I myself have never owned a vette, but I had a friend who did and I have driven it many times. As a matter of fact; this old scotter chevette was the first and best car I have ever driver and never once in the 20 years I knew them did they ever have a major problem besides regular maintenance. Everone keeps talking about the brakes; c'mon people, it's not that hard. Just push a little on them and they work fine. As for the engine if yours is a 1.6L such as my friends it will have an overhead cam witch it very interesting in such a small car. The fact that is rear wheel drive I think is the coolest thing about it. I am currently in the middle of a project of trying to put a vortec v-6 into it. I have have been told that it can be done. Before I get to far into this will someone e-mail me and let me know Pollbermang@aol.com. I think they should not update the chevette. That would ruine the true beauty of it. These cars are classics and will go down in time as being the most indesructible, dependable cars there are.
Hey I am a proud owner of a 1982 chevette I just bought it 2 days ago and I am already in love with it and I would recommend them never to update it. I haven't driven it that much so I wouldn't know the gas mileage yet.
I trusted my Chevette in every weather and it took all the abuse I could dish out... and I'm really hard on cars. (I've killed at least one car from every American manufacturer except Dodge.) I was rear-ended by a pontiac grand am that was doing about 25-30mph. My Chevette lost a half-dollar size spot of paint off its back bumper... the grand am was totaled. The Chevette was ugly and slow, but it was impossible to kill.
"Don't count your Chevettes until they're dead!"-Words from a true Ford fan.
I don't even own one and I already love them. This car runs circles around a Ford Ranger (because Ford rangers are broke down 98% of the time!)

I'm not Anti-GM. The 1986 Pontiac 6000 we had was pretty good. And how can I be a true Ford fan if I'm presently driving a Honda? As for the Ranger being junk... I can't really say. The most recent ones are decently reliable according to Consumer Reports.
I love my Chevette (actually an Acadian, but the same thing) I have owned 4 of these little mites and still run my 87 every day in Muskoka Ontario. It NEVER lets me down and is GREAT on ice and snow if you have the right tires. My little gem has 137000 KM on it and is automatic. I totally wore out the others and always liked the four door for space and easy access. They do suffer from a bad alternator ground connection to the valve cover (fixed them all) also changing a starter is a bit of an experience and the heater controls always seem broken (used cars) but you can still get heat by opening the hood an shoving the arm back on the heater box!! Yes the doors freeze, but a light coat of petroleum jelly fixes that. You have to love a car that has only one fan belt!!! BRING BACK THE VETTE!!
The chevette is a great car. I have an 82 scooter and love the thing. when it dies I'm shoving a 350 and a 4 speed in the things just to stomp on stupid civics out there. show them when a car was still steel lol.
Oh yeah, a V6 Chevette would be rare, alright. Anything that never existed is really hard to find, you know.
Don't know what "old sales lit" you were looking at, but the North American market Chevette never came with anything, but a 4-cyl, either gas or, for a while, diesel.
I saw one at Race cite with a v6 turbo it did 15.2.
I think it can go faster, but driver not to good.
1984 Chevette 2-door. 2.8L chevy V6. larger brake rotors. pontiac fiero front coil springs, rear coils cut shorter. $1,000 paint job, $500 stereo. 13.8 second quarter mile. the best part is other than the paint, and the stereo (wich the car can still run the 1/4 mile under 14 sec.) price all total, was $954. do that with your imported cars. I haven't seen a sentra or a carolla do a doghnut on dry pavement. they can't. they are front wheel drive. I learned to drive stick in this car. I've had this car for 5 years now, and I love it. when it had the 1.6 in it, with 345,000 miles on it, it would do 75 miles per hour on the freeway, and started every time I needed it to. it never left me stranded, it never broke. yes, they rust, but all cars will rust under the conditions of being driven. wash your car, the dirt will eat thru the paint, causing ALL make and models of cars to RUST. if you take car of your vehicle, and you actually change the oil every 3000 miles, and inspect stuff on your vehicle, stuff won't break. it's called preventative maintenance. check it out.
The poster above spent $1000 on a paint job for a Chevette, and a $500 stereo?! Yikes! The person could probably buy three more Chevettes for the $1500 they spent!!
I have an 82 chevette and I like it. I am 17 and it is the first car I have ever had and I have never had a problem with it. there is a student at my career center that dropped a 440 small block in it and it runs 11's. I didn't believe it either until I saw it run. I am going to try to get a movie of it and I will send the movie to anyone who wants it. my email is juggalos4life10@yahoo.com My name is derek so if you want to chat and if you know a lot about the engine get in contact with me because I just put a new engine in it and I can't get the timing right.
I have a 1984 chevorlet chevette, I'm going to buy a 1985 chevette here in about a month or so, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to change the starter without pulling the motor, my e-mail address is josh_n_niki@yahoo.com if someone could please let me know how to do it, or if it can be done with pulling the motor, thanks and everyone have a good day I hope to hear form someone soon. thanks in advance.
