I just purchased (today) a 1986 Nissan 720 King cab 4x4 deluxe

with 206k miles. It has a blown head gasket.

Truck still runs just fine, but I am going to do a rebuild.

It is cream in color with very minimal rust; everything works, even the power windows!

Has a roll bar mounted in the bed and a brush guard on front.

It looks good for its age.

This is my first 720 King cab and I have heard they were notorious for blown head gaskets.

Any other advise???

Thanks.

I have a 1984 Nissan king cab diesel it has 227000 kilometers on it. the transmission blew and I have removed it and the clutch. I am looking for another 5 speed. I am also wondering if there was an automatic made for these trucks. I have had this truck for about 11 years. the truck has a new paint job, pueter metallic with charcoal trim.

I bought an 84 Nissan p/u recently, that seems to be a nickel and dimer, by looking at the repair history. The truck has a great feel to it, but I have a problem with the idle. One day it just started at high idle and stayed. It has been messed with ad nauseum... hoses checked, choke checked, nothing seemed out of place. Then it quit. I could pour gas down the carb and start it, but that's all. I naturally checked fuel filters, then assumed it was the electronic fuel filter. A mechanic looked at it and said it is the relay that sits under the dash on the passenger side. Can this be the entire problem - the high idle as well as the quitting? I haven't got a relay yet, so I don't know anything as of now.

I had something like that myself. went out and bought a new fuel pump. all seemed fine for a while. then the problem occured again. changed the relay. all seemed fine until I drove a few blocks from the shop. car died. found out my fuel pump was clogged up from all the crud in the gas tank. went back to my old fuel pump. that side of things fixed.

Anyways, I have a 1984 nissan kk. 2.0l gas engine. my problem is it seems to choke around 2000 rpm mark for a split second, then shoots up, lost a lot of power, burns too much gas and now I seem to have some problems climbing hills. the truck stalls. any idea on what the mechanic might not know?

I have a 1984 Datsun king cab 4x4 for sale. It still runs and has many good parts. I drove it for a year and it has 155K original miles on it. Engine and 4 speed transmission are well used and the top speed is 45 mph due to vibration in transmission and lack of power. Rust has been fixed. 4x4 works. 14 MPG at present condition. New tires. Entire truck is painted with black bed liner paint. It is in Polk Co. North Carolina. E-mail me at ussick@yahoo.com if interested and use Datsun for the tag line on the E-mail or I will not open it.

I just bought mine a couple days ago on ebay for 750. I had one when I was in high school ran great, so great that it ran itself into the back of a new tundra, I guess I helped a little. decided to buy a new one, found out when I got it home it had a blown head gasket. anyone know of a fix to this problem or just bite the bullet and change it every 2 years?

I came across a 1984 King Cab. Old guy had it, kept it in the garage. Only had 33000 miles on it when I bought it. I have had it about 1.5 years. Just turned over 39000. It's all original, (ugly) brown, seats are perfect. The body has some primer on it around the bed rail. Only complaint it has no power steering. Had to add the c/d. One other small thing, won't hardly get out of its own way. I have a 14 year old and I think we are going to make it a project truck, paint, maybe some wheels.

Hi, I have a 1984 4x4 king cab with only 2700 miles. How can I lower it as I find it a bit bouncy. Can anybody help?

For the extremely rare diesel owners/restorers your biggest enemy is old diesel fuel.

The engines in those usually don't go bad just the fuel. If it doesn't start or run (if the glow plugs work) it's bad fuel of the little filter is clogged.

Talk to the boat diesel mechanics for tips as they work on small diesel engines a lot. They will usually agree with me it's the fuel first and the delivery of same.

Do you know there are organisms that grow and thrive in diesel fuel?

For the gas peeps that have no guts (power) in their 4 cylinder engines, guess what it's usually the fuel or delivery of same. Replace those filters first then seriously rebuild those carburetors.

Oh a side note here. An evil fact about the new alcohol gas

is the alcohol will eat the rubber in may old fuel lines and deposit those pieces in the fuel filters or carbs before it ever leaks out of the hose. I learned this with a boat that I got real fast field stripping dual carbs in the middle of Puget Sound.

For those that have problems with the head gaskets. I know they come off real clean looking. But pay the money to have them surfaced before replacement.

BIG TIP if it's not mentioned in the repair manual it was an over site I'm sure and who would think of it. BUY NEW HEAD BOLTS. Yeah Yeah I know it sounds stupid since the block and head are aluminum and the bolts are steel but I have dealt with too many of that type (all today) and most all say buy new head bolts in the repair manual.

Before I leave another killer for gas engines are plugged catalytic converters. You can unbolt the exhaust in front of the converter and try driving it and see if the ponies get out of the corral.

This is for the guy wanting to lower his truck; go to your local Auto Zone/Advance Auto Parts and pick up a set of lowering blocks. They run around $25.00. That will bring the rear down about 3 inches.

To lower the front all you have to do is adjust the torsion rods (very simple). When you're at the parts store, pick up a Haynes repair manual for your truck, very helpful. It may just need new shocks.

P.S. I own the truck above your comment.

I have an 84 Datsun/Nissan 2 wheel drive PU and continue to have apparent fuel problems. Had 2 new fuel pumps, a lot of reading and researching, and it still runs for a while and then will only run if idling or if pump the gas like no pressure at all. Had tank out, new filter, and new lines, also. Come to find out that they are rumored to have fuel pump control module with unlisted inputs from oil pressure switch, front end crash shut off, clutch position input, and who knows what else. About to replace module. Any better ideas?

I have an 85 Nissan 720 4X4 king cab bought less than 6 months ago. Just had the carburator rebuilt from the nuts up. Paid a guy 500.00 to do it and he was hard to find.

Looking for a brush guard and can't seem to find one, even when looking at the Pathfinders. So I am gonna have something built. So does anyone know of any web site that shows others who have created brush guards or front end mods? I plan to post the hell out of mine once done, but was thinking to get it done easier by looking at one already finished.

I have also had the heads resurfaced, and the tires and rims replaced from a junk yard to the original rims with tires for 70.00 bucks.

I am looking for a good skid plate; found one but it didn't bolt up (guess some have an elbow plate to the frame then the skid plate, others don't).

Replaced window washer bottle (5.00), the engine drop light (5.00) the temp gauge (20.00) and the driver seat (25.00 then had one redone for 125.00). Took some searching with each, but in a couple days I get most parts. Thus not too hard to find.

Hope my info helps the casual looker. Hope to see a reply to my question.

Later. RS.
