To the ax dude, I'm sorry to say, but your dreaming mate a vts would blow a swift gti along with your ax.
Alright all you people that think the GTI is crap then I guess you have never been in one. You got to remember this car came out like 15 years ago, compared to the WRX which came out like 5 years ago. Also it is only a 1.3L compared to the 2L turbo of the WRX. I have had mates say why would you have one, but once they get in and I take them for a spin in it they soon change there minds really quick. They are also get great in a drag. With there high RPM (8000RPM), I've seen cars go in to 3rd while I'm still in 2nd and sitting beside them, they also have great breaks so you can stop a lot later then most stock cars. In a drag between my 93 stock GTI and a V6 Turbo Ford. I got out first, then they went past me going into 2nd. I caught up in 3rd and was just in front in 4th. Lights went red and we braked at the same time. I stoped on the first white line with no problems at all, while they lost control and came really close to losing it. Also at the time my car had 2 other people while they had only one. So you can't say they are a slow car as mine dose 0-100km in 8secs and dose 200km which is really good for the 1.3L.
I think the gti swift are a great car. Performance is amazing considering its only a little 1.3.
I've also raced one with my 1.5 lsi vtec civic and it was a lot closer than you'd think.
I also own a suzuki swift gti and for a 1.3 pushing 125 bhp it does me low insurance, cheap tax (as I'm from the uk) and to the vts owner I no that the swift wold have 1 of them for breakfast as I have many times!!!
I agree that the gti is a preety quick car for a 1300cc as I've recently sold my civic esi vtec which was pushing 16obhp after modifications as I struggled from 0-50 toshake one of these little fcukers off until the vtec qicked in an I was gone. i would recommend a gti to a first time driver if can get insurance as they are quicker than the vtr saxo an the corsa gsi!!!
To all the people who don't have a clue:
Swifts are a very underrated car, all the cars you are comapring it to are newer, more expensive, and have bigger engines! a Saxo is a disgusting car, and is rather disappointing to say its got 300cc more than a swift and is only slightly faster on statistics! Unless you have drivin a swift you will never truely understand what it is about the car the people love, its just a fun car to drive.
Not even can compare a Swift Gti, with a Peugeot 205 GTi, a car that is still respected even by Wrx of Evo owners, a car not only for acceleration, but for a Great Handling, something a Swift Gti owner can only dream about, if you Gti owner think you Swift Gti handling is good, just try a Pug 106 Rallye, or the Mighty 205 gti.
The Gti is an awesome car. Handling is fantastic and mods and services are cheap.
89 gti with a 1.45L bored out engine and gt25 turbo eats wrx's for breakfast on the road and on the track + with mods has only cost 9k =half that of a stock wrx AND you don't see one every 5secs while out driving it.
That last comment is a work of fiction. Even if it had the power, (which it would'nt) it would not have the grip for rapid acceleration like an impreza, and even though its lighter you would have to get a lott of power to keep up. even bored out to 1.4 with turbo, too puny. Theirs also a lott of comments about the standard GTI beating this beating that, a corsa GSI is far better. I don't drive novas anymore, but when I had my SRI I kept in front of one of these, I had to push it too the limit, but he didn't pass me. So when its compared to far higher class cars it sounds daft.
That comment about WRX's is a laugh. I have a Swift GTi and I know that there is no way it would keep up with a WRX, but come on, a Corsa GSi, don't make me laugh. My mate has one with mods on it - my Swift GTi is standard and the Corsa is left for dust every time we race (cheap to insure, good mpg, beats VTR, VTS, GSi, which all have 1.6's in them)
Well, like yourself I can only speak from personal experiences. And mine was in a nova 1.4 8v SRI, it was on my rear 1/4 all the way to the next set of lights, from about 20mph the race started, for about 1/8 of a mile. Who knows, if its faster maybe he couldnt get the best out of it.
Swift GTi owners, face the facts, you just can't lose!! Ever notice how the only cars that people mention that can "beat" the GTi are like 1.8l and turbocharged? Ever notice that no one mentions another NA 1.3 or 1.6l car that can trounce it? Not even the multicoil ignition, VVT / VVTi cars? As an owner i'll tell you that it's a great car. Weak handling, weak chassis? Mine (totally stock) has survived 10+ years on Jamaican roads and believe me, they are rough. Sure there are cars that are faster and handle better... they just cost 4 times more.
So go ahead and brag to your friends that you beat a Swift GTi. Just mention to your friends how much you suffer in car payments, gas bills, insurance and that you needed your 50% displacement advantage, a turbocharger and 4WD to beat a NA Swift. Whoo hoo!
No bragging rights there... it just shows that the Swift GTi is a helluva little car.
PS: I have had victory over stock 1.3l Toyota Starlet turbos. The one I did not beat was heavily modified (different pistons + gt28bb turbo @ 16PSI etc.)
You guys have no clue. You can buy a GTI for US$ 350,00, go to teamswift.net, a member just bought one for that price. Now what car can you buy for US$ 350,00? Hell that´s the price for insurance in a WRX you are trying to compare.
The GTI may not be very fast stock, but it is a lightweight sportscar like the AE86 which is on a level of its own, but not because its power, but due to its overall balance. And when turboed the GTis can easily clock 12s, but with the turbo kit you can buy about 5-6 GTis and still not buy a single wrx. This is not a drag car, but a very well balanced car for autocross or touges.
Well I think it's funny that half the people on here knocking the Swift GTi probably haven't even seen one, let alone been in one. Just take a ride in one and you will see that they can eat Saxos. I own one and know this because half the other boys in my town own Saxos, and I've only had the car a couple months, but they already know they have to try extremely hard to beat me, and don't want to do that because their cars are too fragile, whereas mine has old school japanese reliability, and it's cheap, so I can drive it hard without worrying.
I bought a Swift GTi yesterday, and I think I'm in love with it! My brother used to have one and he used to eat most cars on road... So next time you see a Swift, think twice about racing it!
By the way, what is the standard BHP on the Swift?
