Psst. Just a rule of thumb, guys, but nothing's "fast" unless it hits 60mph in under 5 seconds. Simple as that. The Swift is a sports car...yeah, right.

Whoa you guys I'm suprised nones gone out and done any research. the swift doesn't have big gears at all...

And just to let you know currently I'm beating 2 wrxs and 1 evo in my autocross leauge and I'm a beginer lol... It doesn't need to be powerful when you hauling a race preped 1,434 pound car at 17 psi I'm getting 213 hp, 189tq.

All I got to say is that the swift gti is a fast car, is very in-expensive and it is a beginer's car. If you wish to get a cheap fast car, get a swift, if you think it will be as fast as an impreza wrx or something like that then you will be very disappointed, but please remember, with the money that you get and impreza, you will get about 4 Swift's gti. Great car for beginners.

Brought a swift gti after owning a 1.1 fiesta, when I pulled out of the garage, I pinned it and was grinning all the way home, lightweight body, pokey lil jappy engine and wicked brakes, in cornwall where I live there are loads of sri and vtrs, so on the goes the 1.1 sticker, I get boy racers on my ass, I drive it real pathetically like a beginner and then on a nice little corner pin the throttle and see their faces in the rearview, not happy... gilbert (sukmyswift)

I drive the 1.3 8 valve swift gls. above 3000 rpm its really good and it powers up to 6500

30 in 1st 60 in 2nd 90 in 3rd then you need a bigger engine (or a gti) but it surprises people and you can easily drop to 2nd at 40 and take off quick. I can well believe the gti claims. and if anyone doesn't believe I can look at a tacho, a speedo and a road at the same time then you can go f you r sel.

I'm sorry I have to put my view in here!

I've owned a WRX, and currently run a near stock Celica GT4, and I have to say I respect the little Swift for the car it is!

And the one thing you have to remember is power to weight ratio! When these 1300cc twin cam screamers get a t25bb turbo strapped to their backside running 7psi, they generally put out 180-200bhp tuned properly. All this in a 850kg car means it's going somewhere! Fast!

I would say that on a standing 1/4 against a 220bhp WRX weighing 1250-1350kg, it would be close!

But straight line speed isn't what WRXs are about! They are point to point cars that handle and find traction where others can't! But REALLY, the bottom line is Saxos are rubbish!

Gaz.

Hmm... I'd just like to take the chance to voice some opinions.

1. As to whether or not the Swift is a “Sport Car.” It isn’t, it’s a small, warmed-over hatchback. That however doesn’t stop it from being more fun, and significantly cheaper than most of the cars to which it’s being compared here. To compare a near 20yr old pocket-rocket with a RX is insulting, but the swift may be more fun on a truly tight road. As for the suspension, the Swift has pure-trailing-arms, which are more precise than the torsion-axles most cars in its class carry.

2. “Is the Swift as fast as My XYZ?” Probably not, and if you honestly care, than this really isn’t the car for you. The Swift isn’t so much a performance car as it is a car designed to be fun to drive; at that it excels.

3. Is the Swift an “icon of the 90s?” No, thank God, so it’s still cheap.

4. Does any of the anecdotal evidence presented here prove anything? Not one bit, but if you do some research there are still tests carried out by reputable publications, in period, under controlled conditions, and most of them come away saying a lot of what I just have, that the Swift was no rocket-ship, but that in terms of enjoyment that it didn’t matter in the least. The Swift offers fun all out of proportion to its cost and power output.

That’s all I’ve got.

-B.

I just picked up a 94 GTi w/81,ooo miles on the clock for free! Is the body perfect? No, and I don't care. I'm using this for a sporty commuter car, nothing less/nothing more. I might take it to an autocross or rally cross just to have fun. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me they have a WRX free for me to pick up that runs. My point is they are fairly cheap unlike the WRX, EVO's, etc.

It's funny how people compare technology from the 80's to that we have now. And it's amazing how people still write about the Swift GT.

Hands down, the Swift GT is the best and most reliable pocket rocket to drive in the city. At the time the car was sold, it was the only one available with manual steering, four wheel disc brakes, and a DOHC motor pumping out 100 horse with only 1300 cc, while it miserly sipped petrol. The GT was never meant to be a mass market success, but a performance gorilla in the asian world of mini cars. WE were damn lucky to see it on North American soil.

To have a fair comparison one needs to look at the golf GTI, Civic Si/CRX and the MR2 non turbo. The swift's performance was at par with these and its handling was more predictable and tossable than all others. When comparing stock to stock. And it was the least expensive of the bunch. By 3-4k compared to the Honda and Golf and half the cost of the mr2.

The swift GT had the highest lateral g force recorded in Road & Track, only to be beaten by the Corvette and other near exotics like the 911.

The Swift GT was never meant to please everyone, but only a few true driving enthusiast then and now.

The Swift GTi is... Cheap to run and fast in the right conditions using the rpms fully. 1st and second gear in this car are quite rapid and surprises most. It still pulls hard in 3rd. The swift DOES feel fast, but only if you appreciate it.

It is a fun car to drive, and to compare any much newer cars is simply sad. The Swift GTi won't die because it has more than what you expect from it. Also it still can keep up and beat racers in Saxos etc nowadays. On that point I think the only reason people think it's slow is because they have not had the pleasure to drive one or drive it properly. And if you own an obviously faster car than why say it beats a Swift??

I am very proud to have owned a 1993 swift gti for 5 and a half years, the only issue at times was the annoying rattling, this could be due to jamaican roads (terrible) but I can give proven examples of my stock 1993 swift gti, I have beaten a toyota starlet turbo on the strip no contest 2.5 car lenghts on the street it was worse 3.5 to 4car lengths, I beaten a 3.0 vtec accord (matic) 2 car lengths on the street, I have been neck to neck with a 1993 xsi integra b16 vtec (160hp) also I have been neck to neck with a 1994 toyota levin gt (160hp) silvertop engine this one I went all the way full max I inched away very slowly from him beaten him half a car length, he shook my hand after the race, then another friend said I should try to beat him in his levin bzg (170hp) he beated me no surprise, so after owning the swift for 4years I contacted someone in australia that sold me some simple bolt on's:stage2 clutch, genie 4-2-1 header reprogramed ecu stage1 cams and retainers, mushroom intake, short shifter and a camber kit with all the bushings the car needed, all for usd1000.00 to be exact then I spent a little more and got a ultra flow cat and did a 2inch piping that's it, I beated the bzg by at least 2 car lengths (sweet revenge) also that was a race with 3 other cars the bzg levin, 1992 sentra ser with i/h/e and a integra sirg (gsr),the ser started off ahead of the pack because of the torque advantage I took him down by 4th gear the bzg was close behind me by this time the integra was behind us all of a sudden he starts wiping us all out because of the top end on those cars. I just have to share my time with the swift gt with you guys not the fastest but a contender if driven the right way.
