Be careful with 1994 4Runner engine replacement. ATK appears to be very problematic with their engines. Jasper is more expensive, but appears to have a better track record.

Well, the head gasket issues starting in the late '90s and going through the late 94's were subject to a service campaign (recall.) Any work done to your HG should be FREE up to 10years and some mileage that escapes me at present.
I have a 1990 4runner. ('89.5 it came off the line) I CANNOT say enough GOOD things about it. I drive with a LEAD foot red-lining it at least 2x every drive and it has given me 256,000 miles of service without a single breakdown or worry.
Power is adequate though others disagree. This is a truck not a corvette, it's not supposed to be fast, it's supposed to get you places. If you want 'fast' go buy a GSXR1000.
I am sold on Toyota for life and this is my first vehicle...
I got my 91 4x4 V6 w/auto when it was born. Loved it to death even after it lost it's timing belt tensioner bearing throwing ball bearings into every place it could find at 124k. That cost a mere $700 but was immediately followed by the passenger head gasket at 128k. I was told I over heated the truck, which I argued about, but ended up paying the $3800 for repairs as well as $150 for a rental from the dealer. The same evening I brought it home I received a call from a friend and was informed of the recall. The next day I visited the dealer and had a good go around until they agreed it was under warranty.
I was given back all my money including the rental fee. Yes, it's was part of the recall as well. Right away I noticed I had less power. Seems their new gaskets lower the compression. Now I'm a fairly decent mechanic as far as motorcycles go and I've been around long enough to know some history on car engines and design and it seems to me this aluminum head and cast iron block has never been a great idea. At 181k I had a massive radiator failure which I had the dealer repair. At that time I asked about the heads and was told that it had not been damaged. At 183k I received a short block due to the infamous "etching" and of course the second head gasket on the same side for free only because I was lucky enough to get the above statement in writing after the radiator incident. Under close inspection you can see how the compression ring has become distorted under uneven expansion and contraction. I called Fel-Pro and confirmed my suspicions. Fel-Pro sells a head set for a few hundred dollars that's actually better than the TOY parts, so they say. Well I'm at 191k and I'm starting to get that hard to start syndrome if I let it sit for longer than a few days. So I guess I'll be getting another head gasket. I think I'll do it myself this time. Or should I just drop in that 350 Chevy small block? lar.
I love toyota 1994 4runner 4x4 has 194541 miles never been in the shop.
This is my 2nd time replacing the head gasket from my 1992 toyota 4runner V6, maybe due to the faulty head bolts or cheap head gasket, so at this time I am putting there new MLS (multi Layer Steel) head gasket with the possible of using head studs instead of head bolts to see if it resolve the head gasket problem. If it leak again then I'll swap it in a newer engine..
My 94- v-6 toyota 4-runner has 193,000 miles & recently has blown a head gasket. Do not know what to do? Is it worth fixing...
I recently purchased a 1994 4runner. It seemed to be in perfect condition... BUT about 2 months after I bought it, I started to smell gas fumes from the A/C vents. I brought it in and one of the fuel injectors needed to be replaced, ($350.00) That done, I still smell the gas fumes and can't seem to figure out why... any suggestions?
My 94 4Runner has 165000 miles on it. Other than standard maintenance (timing belt, hoses, spark plugs, etc.), I've never really had to do anything to it. The only thing I've done other than that is the power steering pump. The truck is still in awesome shape and I get compliments all the time.
Bought my 1994 4Runner V6 new with 13 miles on the odometer. Took real good care of it with regular oil changes, tune ups, etc. The transmission gave out in 2004 at 160K miles, so I had it rebuilt. Now at 225K miles, the head gasket just blew. Although I'm hoping for the best, it looks pretty bad, so this thing might be heading for the junkyard. Too bad, because I really enjoyed owning this SUV. BTW - I previously had the head gaskets replaced in 1998 at around 100K miles under the Toyota service bulletin.
