I paid $3500 for my 1987 Sprint Turbo in 1990 I have 426000 miles on the car. I love it, I have a HKS bypass and make 9.9 pounds of boost and have beat a BMW V12 that tried to pass me then would hit pea gravel in Montana at a national Park so I passed the guy and he tried, but could not hang with me or out top end me. The car will bury the speedo way past the to speed and actually starts to lift the rear end at top speed which is way over 100 mph, faster than the v-12 BMW could go on the straights.

Parts are a problem wrecking yards have been my source for new wheel hubs and trans. I have beat many cars in street games and the car is like a motorcycle in town very easy to drive. Between Yreka and I- 5 and highway 101 in California some years ago I passed a turbo Porsche with what I think was George Lucas and a friend, they did pass me once on a straight away and did have more speed and power but he gave up as the Sprint turbo in the twisters can just go too fast for the Porsche guy unless he really wants to stay ahead of me. I also took a truck set up for cornering into a spin out condition for him on the road between half moon Bay and the Concourse -d-Elagance at Pebble beach. He tried to stay with me in a corner. I have lot it once going into the parking lot of Boeing at Everett in the rain to a guy in a all wheel drive sports car. I learned that counter steering a front wheel drive car was the wrong thing to do and made tow 360' throught the esses and kept it on the road and made it to work on time! I might point out that driving fast on public streets is stupid and dangerous and all these othe guys were pushing me and I should have ignored them, but stupid is as stupid does so sorry for that. And these are 3 occurences over a 40 year driving span and not something I plan on doing again.

I recently bought a Chevy sprint 1987 from my brother in law. This car has been in a garage during winter times. Even that it got a rusty gas tank. The lines at the top got so much corrosion that they broken. I am looking for a replacement gas tank. My e-mail address is sr_electronicstechnician@yahoo.com. Thanks.

I bought my 87 in July 87 and kept it on the road until Nov 05 when I bought a new 05 Matrix. The original engine gave me 237K miles and the 1st set of tires wore down to the threads after 217K miles. Steel cords sticking through and all. Honest! I bought junked 87's for $50 for the engines and got 100K more miles from it. That body lasted me around 500K+ miles. When the engines start using a quart of oil a day, and I'D still get 40 mpg, I'd find another junker and a young mechanic and do it all over again. My best mileage for the 1st 2-3 yrs was 58 on trips. For work, I'd drive 140 miles. 5 days a week for years, later only 100 miles. 4 days. GREAT car, they should remake them and solve the gas crisis! Glad to find this site. Growing up my family practically lived with sprints. We used four in my immediate family and convinced Cousins, Aunts and Uncles to get them totaling 10 Chevy Sprints. Most were the regular Sprint. Two of them had been the Sprint Turbo, and one was a Sprint Plus (just what they called the early versions of the four door Hatchback models). About three weeks ago I bought an 87 Sprint Turbo and drove it from Florida to Virginia. I got 46.5 miles per gallon on the highway and 41.3 in the city. It cost me $26 to fill the tank (at 3.24/gallon) and I could drive anywhere from 325 - 375 miles between fill-ups. I am looking at doing a complete rebuild. Not that it needs it right now as it doesn't burn oil or have an problems that I have found but I would like to get another engine and transmission all ready to put in. I was very fortunate to find a car that has absolutely no rust or rot. If anyone has any info on where to get engine parts or even interior trim pieces please let me know. Thanks, tangenconstruction@yahoo.com.

With gas what it is, I am pressing my 1987 Sprint/ER back into service, after an 8 year parked-in-the-back stint. Prior to that well earned rest, I (and my son) put 370+K miles on it. Then a water hose split and the head warped.

Never had to go into the engine proper, except for a water pump, timing belts, etc.. Front end wore out faster that the rest.

Fun to drive (you could make like the Mille Miglia), and excellent gas mileage. Some don't believe me, but I once got 60.3 MPG on a trip to Atlanta, driving at 63 to 65 mph.

I am now struggling with the things that dry up or get creaky when not used for a long time.
