I bought a 88 Chevy truck from my father back in 1996. It was a stripped down work truck 4.3 v6 and 5 spd. My dad bought it new and used it for his home building business. He ran up 214 thousand miles hauling around tools from site to site. Even hauled the occasional skid steer. He never had to change anything, but brakes. Gm changed out an ECM that failed and they had a recall on the ball joints, but no real problems. When I bought the truck I was 17 years old and drove like I was in nascar. Even with all the abuse I still got 80 thousand miles out of the truck with the only major problem being the clutch finally wore out. Truck still ran when I sold it. My next truck was a 92 GMC. Similiar drive train except 4x4. Also an excellent truck.
Then I bought a 2000 chevy new with 4.8 litre and 5 spd. First thing I noticed was the sheet metal was much lighter. Had the transmission changed 2 times. (loud gear whine in top gear) Two warped rotors in first 10 thousand miles. Stabilizer bar bracket weld broke off frame. Motor had pistion slap. Sold the truck right after the warranty expired for 2 grand less than what I owed on it.
Just bought a 94 Chevy with 4.3 5spd. for a work truck. Looking forward to getting at least 100 thousand inexpensive miles out of this truck.
I plan to hang on to my 1988 Chevy 2500 truck for some time. It has been very reliable and handles well. I did have to replace the distributor after 110,000 miles, but the 305efi engine still has good power. A well-tuned 305 is not a bad engine as some suppose. Fuel economy isn't that bad for a truck either... about 18mpg if not pushed too hard.
I have an 88 K1500 with a 305; only about 140000kms, runs amazing and gets great gas mileage for a truck. It gets better mileage than my dads old 2001 Ford.
Goes 10000 km's between full synthetic oil changes, and I never have to add a drop of oil!
They're not the fastest trucks on the road, but if I wanted fast I'd get in my car...
Just bought a 88 Sierra w/5spd 350 and its like meeting with an old friend. its rough and tough like a truck should be. They definitely don't make them like this anymore. and as far as being fast it aint bad for a 20 year old truck. but that's what the F-body is for.
I bought my 88 Chev Cheyenne last fall. It has the 4.3l automatic and with little repairs it is running great. I like the feel of truck. The Cheyenne is a great truck and despite what my wife says, I will drive it for many more years.
Okay I love my '88 4WD Chevy Cheyenne. This truck is worth its weight in gold. I think I have changed the battery in the last 3 years and general tuneups. It reached 120,000 miles where off roading lost me the muffler and piping, oops :) My first winter I pulled out 6 vehicles without any problems except the tow ropes keep breaking, any suggestions? This girl loves her truck.
I bought a Chevy 1988 2500 C Series from my employer back in 1994 for $1,000 with 110k miles on it. The transmission went out after about 180K. I replaced it with a new 400 Turbo and shift kit (which I didn't need). Finally after 262K the old gal's engine started to have compression problems. I swapped out the good 305 with a rebuilt 350. Man I miss that engine. The mechanic who put in the 350 was a putts. The truck runs lean which makes the "Service Engine" light come on from time to time. I had the truck repainted the original color in 1999 because I didn't own the truck when there was a recall for the body paint. The truck's interior looks good and I'm still pretty happy with her, but I think it's getting time to put the old girl out to pasture and buy a new one with all the latest bells and whistles. Not a Ford or a Dodge. Only a G M C or another Chevy. I don't have any body rust as far I can see because here in the Pacific NW we don't salt our streets in the winter.
I resently bought a 1988 chevy cheyenne c1500 from my dad for $200.00, he didn't want it and I really liked the truck from the first time my dad bought it. I think he bought it in '92, as a used truck. But she ran good the first year and then she started acting up. First the timing chain was messed up and then the transmission started to give out. well he didn't care to much about the truck because he just used it for hauling off trash and riding to and back from work, so she stayed dirty inside and out. Well he was selling it with out telling me about it because he was leaving for Iraq, (which he is still over there), so when I found out I was about 15 and I asked him if I could buy it off him, he asked me wat I had and he took it. To me I thought I just got a really hard core steal. but instead I inded up spending over $400 just to fix up the engine. well I bought new brake caps and a timing chain also a new muffler because I messed it up while muddin. and I got a new paintjob on her, a nice oakly camo, took me and my friend 3 months to hand paint it and get it looking like real woodland camo. but now she blends in real good!
I took her out to the woods and left to go hunting last year and came back and couldnt find my truck intill I cault glimps of the mirror. well I bought new off road tires for her for $130.0 even though shes not a 4x4 but it makes her look great with the camo and the lift works great. but other than that there isn't anything in the world id trade for her. She runs great now and has HP out of the yingyang!
(can't wait to see my dads face when he sees his old peace of so called crap looking brand new!)
My dad owns a very used 88 Cheyenne C1500. It is the best truck you could ask for!
It recently had a massive oil leak and two u-joints replaced. Now the transmission is acting up, but it has well over 200,000 miles on it.
He bought it used and he has put well over 100,000 miles on it. He says even if today it don't start, he can't complain cause it's been a great truck, I love it!
