When starting my 1999 Chevy Z71 truck today I noticed a strange sound and the ABS warning light came on. The ABS motor kept on running even after I turned the engine off and removed the key from the ignition.
My neighborhood repair mechanic picked the truck up for me. The mechanic just called and said the replacement part alone is $950.
This truck is in excellent condition and has 54,000 miles on it. I am very disappointed that Chevy is having quite a few of these problems and are not recalling the trucks.
I too have a 1999 Chevy Silverado. I bought it used, 30,000 miles on it, after trading in a NEW 2000 Chevy that had too many problems to list. (ABS, main computer, transmission...) I was going to go with another brand, but couldn't because of financing details. Anyway, had no problems until about 60,000. Then ABS went out. Luckily I had an extended warranty, but I had to fight with GM, my local dealership and the warranty company to get it fixed. The local dealership botched the job twice; after their second "fix" I almost rear-ended another car when the ABS kicked in for no reason at a stoplight less than a half-mile from the dealership. I turned the truck around, drove back and threw the keys on the service manager's desk and just started yelling in front of everyone else there. After that outburst and a very angry letter to GM and the dealership, they replaced ALL the ABS equipment at no charge to me. Since then, I've had to replace the fuel-gauge sensor; rear shocks; front brake rotors (TWICE) ; and emergency brake mechanism. The fan for the heater/vent/AC doesn't work on the two lowest settings. The power steering hoses blew. The rear main seal is leaking. And now my drivers-side power window motor is shot. This truck is used for daily commuting and some occasional hauling, but it's not used hard enough to justify all the problems. I've never, ever had this much trouble with a vehicle. The heartbeat of America? Better get a pacemaker? Like a rock? Sure - sandstone. I will never, EVER buy another GM product.
WOW! I didn't know there were so many people in the same boat as me. Like all of you I own a 1999 Chevy silverado. My truck is a 1500 4x4 ext cab. I don't know where to start. The ABS was replaced before I bought it so no problems there, but I have had to replace the fuel pump, it starts hard, the check engine light is always on with no codes, it shifts hard, makes a clucking noise when I take off, the gas mileage is well I'm not going there, but my new problem is my dim lights won't come on. I have brights, but no dims. I have tried turning them on with the manual switch and have looked at buying a whole new steering collum thinking the switch went bad, but I don't want to spend the money on something I know is not the problem. Any suggestions?
I have a 1999 Silverado Z71. It has 106000 miles on it. No problems to report. What I just read from everyone;iam scared to drive my truck anymore.
My 99 Chevy truck just started with the ABS light and noise. I have had the sticky gas pedal and cleaned carb at intake. Hope to solve fet in ABS thanks for the info on the brakes.
I have a 1999 Silverado, every time I stop there is a clunk from underneath. I have inspected the rear end, but still can't determine what is causing the problem. The noise can be felt in the cab. Has anyone else experienced this problem? The truck runs great and has 115,000 miles. I also inspected the transmission and motor mounts.
Same ABS problem here!!! Come on Chevrolet can't you see this is a huge safety issue? Fork out the recall...
I also own a 1999 Chevrolet Z-71. I bought it used in 2006 with 64,000 miles on it, now it has close to 90,000 miles I haven't had the problem with the ABS so I am hoping that problem has come and gone with the old owner. But I have had to replace the fuel pump. From time to time there is a horrible jerk and pop coming from the transmission, took it to AAMCO all the found was a bad ground to the computer. The truck will not go in 4 Low, but the service 4 wheel drive light has never come on. Now the Service Engine Soon light has come on. I had to replace an emissions hose and now a day later the light is back on. This has all gone on with in the past two months. I am a hardcore Chevy man and I love Chevy, but I am sadden to say that I do believe this is my last Chevy. Too many problems.
Yet another long time Chevy owner who will never buy another GM truck. I own a 99 Z71 and have pulled the fuse. Also had the sticking throttle body, which cleaning every so often helps. Also had the 4 wheel drive switch go bad. That was a 70.00 switch that only took a few min to change. Also had the tailgate cables break as I was loading a mower into the bed. That one threw my back out when I unexpectedly fell!
I also have the clunk when the truck shifts gears. I was told that if I pull the driveshaft and pack the spline full of heavy grease, this will help. Now to top it all off, I blew a brake line and after looking I see all the lines will need replaced! This truck only has 80,000 miles on it!
I had a 89 Chevy truck and drove it for 180,000 miles with no problems at all. I just went and looked at another vehicle and it will never be another Chevy! I'm sure hating to sell this lemon to some person!

Don't feel alone I have the same ABS problem here I have had the fuse pulled for 2 yrs now because I don't have $1000 to fix it either, but I'm not going to listen to the ABS motor run all the time. so I pulled it and now I get to see the the ABS light and the brake light stay lit up all the time, but hey no noise... come on GM... anyone else get a anti lock brake discount on your car insurance? hope I don't ever have a accident and they find out it does not work. call GM and let them know 1-800-222-1020.
Man I must be lucky. I just traded my 98 extended cab silverado 4X4 on an 06. It had 196000 on it and yes I did replace the front pads twice, but I pull a trailer also. Only other thing I done to it was a fuel pump at 164000. Was one of the best trucks I ever owned. Never had ABS problems. Other than normal maintance (battery, oil changes, tires) it was great.
I to am a Chevy owner - same ABS problem - which yes it's a 99 and other than the insurance thing - I've never had a vehicle with ABS so it doesn't bother me that much. I too thought when I got the recall notice that my problems were over as far as that went - oh well - wish GM would do something. Also - I am wondering about the 4WD switch. How many people have had much success with replacing the switch? My truck makes awful noises when it switches from 2WD to 4WD and the Auto 4WD button is the only button that works - the 4HI and 4LOW do not work - and the other day it almost didn't come out of 4WD at all. Can anyone tell me if this is a switch problem or a transfer case problem. Thanks.
I too own a 99 Chevy Silverado. The ABS would not stop running right after our 60,000 mile warranty ran out. We pulled the fuse rather than pay $800.00 just for the replacement part - not including labor. I also have the clunking noise from rear of cab upon acceleration - unable to find what it is. The 4-Wheel drive light coming on - I had checked and it was determined that it is the module in the dash - $90.00 part not including labor. Will live w/light coming on - rest of system inspected and fine. Service engine light on - put about $600.00 into emissions (O2 sensor, ERG valve, etc) finally told that I had to pay for upgrade to computer that corrects this - paid another $100.00 and it shut off the service engine light soon and have not had another issue with it. Had to replace the wiper motor, driver side electric window motor (ran great for short time now again it is extremely sluggish upon raising back up and the passenger side is as well). Accelerator pedal sticking - cleaned out carb using light brillo pad - had a lot of build up - no more problems with it. Had start up ticking sound - started using engine treatment with oil changes (also changed to oil for vehicles w/high mileage) and have not had any further ticking. This vehicle now has over 160k miles on it. With the exception of the above issues which occurred when the mileage was low, the truck has been reliable - never a no start, never stranded. I do believe that GM needs to own up to the ABS issue. Also, I think that the rest of the issues are irritating and can make you not enjoy your vehicle. You always feel the need to have to explain why your dash lights are on when you give someone else a ride and it is like the car crying wolf - if there were to be a problem, you would ignore it because the lights are always on! The guy with the tailgate straps that broke - these were recalled and I had mine replaced. They stated that they could rust and fail.
I have a 98 K2500 with 260,000 miles. This week my brake/hazard fuse blew (the one on the side of the dash, not under the hood). After monkeying around for a while I discovered the pulling the ABS fuse solved the problem. (It of course created a new one.) Until now, I have not had any ABS problems. In fact, until I pulled the fuse, that part of the system worked fine. (We have lots of snow, so they come on a lot right now.) I chose to have working brake lights over working ABS. With everyone else having so many ABS issues, did anyone ever have the ABS system blow the brake fuse?
I see a lot of comments about switching to Toyota, and maybe if Toyota comes out with a 454 or a good diesel, that will be an option. Until then, Toyota just doesn't have enough power.
1999 2wd Ext-cab Sierra, original owner with 140,000 miles. ABS & EBrake light have begun just now started coming to come and off, but so far no running noise. This occurred after jumping the battery. Friends in here in Houston, say no problem: just pull power plug on ABS motor, and live with the idiot indication lights.
Driver side widow regulator went South @ 90k miles. Switched to Castrol Synthetic engine oil and the clicking noise on start-up disappeared at 60K. GM fuel pumps aren't good for more than 150K, especially if you like to run the tank down near empty; so the plan is to replace it once we reach 150k.
At times in cold and dry conditions hear the "rain popping noise" around the windshield, but it's cause is still a mystery. Replaced the pitted windshield at 120k and glued the rubber down around it, hoping to eliminate this noise, but didn't help. Happens less than 2-3% of the time.
Were going to buy a new Avalanche, but GM Master Card got a bit nasty, so this is probably the last GM truck for us unless the folks at GM make some kind of break through on this recall.
All in all, less problems than our Ford 98 Expedition.
