There is no way your Tiburon could out pull an SRT-4 on the highway. You've got 185 horsepower, he's got 230 and that's just from the factory. 167 mph top speed? Your car doesn't have the guts to go that fast. The last generation Corvette topped out around there. You drive a 2 door Elantra with a six speed. The Tiburon is an okay car, but it's just a gussied up economy sedan.
Re to the last commenter. I sat laughing for about 10 min when I saw that 167 mph comment on the tibby. 167 mph? Maybe on PS2 but in the real world that's simply not possible. 167 is Porsche country. Even if the odo readings are inaccurate(they are on this car) 167 mph is simply not possible. The manual tibby has stock top speed of 137 and even by bolting on some after market kit does not help much. Maybe real top speed with this kit is 150 and then I'm being nice. 145 is more probable. I'm sitting her laughing ;-)
On normal aspirated cars it's difficult to squeeze out much more hp. Turbo/compressor cars are much simpler to tune and as an example you can squeeze out 245hp from a Audi 1.8 T. No changes to the engine like new cams and the turbo is stock, but you need larger injectors and the rest of the package. The tibby is simply not a very suited car for street racing. Supercharging? You are kidding? You can't without completely rebuilding the engine. At least you need new pistons and rods. And I think the stock crankshaft can't take the torque either. And you will need a head job since the tibby head does not have enough flow, high lift cams will only help you to a certain point.
And the clutch will need to replacement. And the cv-joint and the transmission will enjoy a short life on a supercharged tibby. These are weak cars that does not take heavy tuning very well.
I just bought an 03 tib with only 10,000 on it. I have only put 3,000 on it in about 4 months, and now my transmission is already going. I thought it was a great car, but now I am seriously rethinking my opinion.
Increasing top speed 30 mph on a 180 hp car doing 137 stock like the Tiburon will require almost 100 hp extra. So you you need a 280+ hp Tiburon to reach the 170 mph mark. That means serious modification. Very few cars are able to reach the 170 mph mark in true speed. I'm not talking about the bs talk with cars having a 20 mph speedometer misreading, I'm talking about real 170 mph.
As a rule of thumb using basic physics. Increase of top speed 1 mph requires the square of the speed increase in power increase. To overcome increased wind and tyre drag as well as internal mechanical friction. 30/137 is about 22% speed increase, that means 1,22 times 1,22 = 49% needed power increase.,49*180 = 88 hp extra power. That's just the basic physics. In real world that figure would be somewhat higher.
Next time you claim you have a 167 mph Tiburon tell this to the neighbourhood kids maybe they'll believe you.
I own a 2005 SE Tiburon, I have an AEM intake and Espelir JT500 exhaust as well as a few other minor mods and I can tell you that some of what people are posting here is just nonsense. The car is no speed demon, but I will say that it can be made pretty quick in it's own capacity. From the factory it comes very restricted by the factory intake and exhaust and just replacing these does make the car a lot more responsive and a lot more fun to drive. There are proven dynos of Tiburons with just these mods alone which pull high 14s in 1/4 miles, however, as with any car- it has as much to do with the driver as it does the car. It is an attractive car with a good warranty and good build quality for what you pay, however, Hyundai has truly disappointed me with the lack of power and base engine platform for these models. It is by far the funnest car I've ever driven, and I love the car itself- but a little more power from the factory would have gone a long way, even if they would have offered a better engine variation for their top model (say the Sonata's engine). Hyundai has to realize, they can change the surface appearance every year, but until they decide to change the engine people will not take the car seriously- there needs to be a balance between looks and performance. From what I hear, the 2009 model is looking to FINALLY have some decent power, rumors state it will be RWD, with power starting off with a turboed 4 cyl @ around 240 HP and moving up to possibly over 300 HP (the TAU engine?), we will see.
The Tib is an OK car, but it's no sports car even if it looks like it. I'd compare it with the Ford Probe where the manufacturer scavenges the company parts bin to see what they are able to come up with. Want to make a sports car sir? Just a minute, we'll see what we have in the cupboard sir!
That's why these cars are so cheap. It's just generic parts thrown together. The Tib driveline is used for cars, SUVs, people movers. It's not a sports car driveline. In some market the Tib v6 output is as low as 167 hp. It's an engine constructed to give good midrange capabilities. It's simply not possible to get this engine to seriously perform.
If Hyundai was to give this car some serious performance it would not longer be possible to offer this car at the given price. It's not a matter of just tweaking the injection. More power/torque means stiffer chassis, stiffer body, better brakes/clutches/axles/transmissions, better steering components etc. And then we are suddenly talking about a car that's at least 5K more money and maybe even 10K more.
But there are a lot of 18-19 years old buying these secondhand having seen fast'n furious types of movies. They are thinking they are buying serious hardware. They are not. They are buying a souped up Elantra. That's what I'm telling you all.
Any way you put it, a Tiburon is a nicer car than an Sti or neon even a civic. Lets be real now what good is it to have lets say 280 horses in a four door car. any way you put it a four door car aint sporty, even if it had a 400 hp monster in it. just look at the new Charger, it was a disapointment. Say how bout a four door Corvette? Of course not, that don't work. Besides Neons are ugly lets face it they look like a grocery getter...c'mon four doors. Now the STI, this one is even worse, this looks like some reject body style from the late 80's and again 4drs.
Lets go to the horsepower aspect what good is it to have that much power when speed limit signs keep popping up everywhere, same goes with cops. Each day we get more and more cops out there it s ridiculous.
I know they run pretty good and everything, but lets face it, park a Tib next to a Neon and you'll see that from kids to adults even old folks. They'll like the Tib more.
Think about it.
The Tib has a Ferrari like bodystyle and well the subaru and neons, etc. well there just there...4 doors give me a break.
I admit the above cars have awesome engines, but most of the time one can't be racing unless you got deep pockets especially with these high gas prices and Cops everywhere lets not forget the cameras.
So what good is it to have a even a V8 in a ugly car when mostly, lets be honest...people are driving from school to work etc.
Besides their too expensive, in that case just buy a used 350z or corvette or gt.
I have to disagree with the guy wo did 167 or whatever it was I have a 06 tiburon SE and the governer kicks in at 142 so unless you have had computer work it didnt go that fast or its messed up. I love the car it will outrun most of whats in its class. 06 civics are probably the closest run I've had so far, but there torque sucks. I recently put a Ebay cold air on it and it dropped my 0-60 almost by a second I would like to put more stuff on it, but warranty sucks ass if you want something to soup up and not worry about voiding the warranty don't get a hyundai there pretty strict. but all in all I would rather have a mustang GT.
Wow, I have to say there are a lot of yall dissing the Tibb. Maybe it's just because you don't like imports, I don't know, but yeah some of you are right and some wrong.
Yes the Tibb's stock parts like the clutch are not all that great; when it goes out like it probably will, I'll replace it with an aftermarket. But the rest of the car is pretty well done.
I have a Tibb and you say it can't produce hp; you're wrong there, you can throw an Alpine supercharger and a cold air intake and it will produce hp close to 400. I know for as fact from a dyno.
And some one said the Tibb can't take an SRT. Type tibb vs srt on your search; you can see them race. Sorry the Tibb wins.
Well have fun commenting back telling me I'm wrong about everything I said...
I own a 2005 SE 6 Speed tiburon. NGM Sniper Supercharged and let me tell you, I give STI's a run for their $35 Grand. I smoke mostly anything I pull up to. So all of you thinking tiburons are slow, Think Again. SRT 4's are junk, smoked one before my car was charged. Eclipse turbos have no chance, and Subaru WRX's are JUNK!!! My front wheel drive charged tib smokes em all, lol I'm pulling my engine soon and dumping some cash into it, I guarantee by this time next year I will be beating STi's. Keep in Touch!
Wow...everyone here has their opinions I guess. Well let me just say that any car can be modified to go fast. I have a 1990 Honda civic Si with a built b18A1, V-tec head, adjustable cam gears, header, exhaust, cold-air, ported head - intake manifold and exhaust ports. (Now, that being said I also own a 2003 Tiburon Se.) My civic will smoke an SRT-4. Sorry to tell you people. My civic is a street car, and runs consistantly in the 13's. (NON TURBO) I can build motors in my sleep. Cars are what you can make them. Regardless of the car. I've tore down my Tiburon, ported, cammed, exhaust, header, intake and getting ready for a supercharger. Im currently running in the 14's with my Tiburon, and that's with minimal mods. Now my civic as for top speed, I've touched on 142.29 miles an hour. SO for you guys to say that a Tiburon can't touch that, its just not possible?? your smokin somethin. Do the math. Its do-able, trust me. Just because a V-8 can do 160 miles an hour, blah blah blah... so what? Im doing over 140 in a civic!! A civic!? Come on people, get your facts straight.
I have an 06 tiburon SE and I have been 145 in it. I had a hill to help me get past the 142 mark but the computer would not let it go faster than 145. I have a CAI and a catback exhaust.
OK I have something for you all, I have an 03 tibby, complete stock 6 speed manual, and I have noticed there really is no power until about 35-45 mph. Anyways, I have been 135 in my tibby and I still had room to push the throttle down.. so for you to say you can't reach 145 it's not true, and I've smoked an srt-4 with my tiby and it is stock. You see everyone can go fast in there cars but, when you hit a certain speed and then slow down.. I have one word for you; lock your doors so I don't blow them off when I go by you. LMAO ;) because speed is just a number.
I own a 06 Tib SE. It has been slightly modded with I/H/E. That gives the car roughly 38-45 more hp. Now being as I have no place to truly test the limits of my car I can't tell you the what the top speed is in it. Now I can tell you that I have hit 97mph in 4th gear, granted I was close to maxing out in that gear but with two gears remaining I figure I could easily get the 145 that is in question.
A CIVIC smoking an SRT-4?? I think it must be the DRIVER of the Civic who is smoking something in order to have such a wild fantasy.
