First, just let me say thanks to everyone for their valuable comments. I own a 1999 Ford Taurus station wagon. I have driven it about 50,000 miles without any major problems, except for the antenna mast and the wipers coming on by themselves. Does anyone know how much these fixes cost or if it could be done by oneself? I understand from a tech bulletin that the multifunction switch has to be replaced to fix the wiper problem. I know a lot of us out there are having this problem, I would appreciate any comments. Thanks.

Mike.

I own a '99 Ford Taurus for the past seven years. It has 130,000 miles on the odometer. However, we are having numerous problems and would really like some advise.

1. My headlamps keep flicker in the day and I have to turn them completely on to avoid been pulled over my the cops.

2. My steering is locking up and I have to put the car in neutral and then shift it to drive.

3. My alternator went and I had to replace that

4. I get heat for 10 seconds and then there's cold air blowing in the car.

I NEED HELP FAST.

Any suggestion on how to fix this car and a minimum cost, or do it myself will be appreciated.

I purchased a 99 Taurus SE 3 years ago. I have had to replace

the steering rack, heater core, radiator overflow tank in the

first year and a half. I am now hearing a loud groaning noise

coming from the driver side rear. Then again it could be coming from both sides of the rear. It only happens when I

turn a corner. Any suggestions???

I don't think I will purchase another Taurus or Ford again.

Oh my windshield wipers have a mind of there own and I fixed

the door ajar light with WD-40 about 2 years ago.

I also have a 99 Taurus with heater problems. The heater works for 10 seconds and then blows cold air. I can turn it off for several minutes and turn the heat back on with the same results - 10 seconds heat then cold air. Mechanics cannot trace the problem. Any suggestions?

Crooksville, Ohio – We have a 99 Ford Taurus and have been somewhat pleased with it. We do have the same problem with the Windshield wipers coming on by themselves. What is the cost for the fix? Have replaced heater core, thermostat and flushed out system, still not much heat.. any ideas? Noticed that the Taurus has a heater core bypass hose which believed to be why not getting heat into the passenger area. Car is green.. we call it our turtle.

To the Ohio folks from December 3rd: My parents have had a '97 Mercury Sable (same car as your Taurus, I believe essentially), and they had a similar problem with the heat. No heat from the heater, temperature gauge near cold even after running for hours. They had it pressure flushed 4 times. The 4th time was the charm. It apparently had never had the coolant changed--lack of maintenance by the previous owner--and something must have gotten clogged up and restricted the coolant flow. The first three flushes it would work for a little while and then go back to the same thing. After the 4th flush, it has been fine for over a year now and no further problems.

I have a 1999 Ford Taurus with 45,000 miles on it. I bought it new 7 years ago. Last year I had to have the steering rack replaced. Also, last winter my heater started to give me trouble. It would blow warm air, but never get hot. I recently took it to a shop that specializes in radiator and heater repairs, they blew out the heater core and now it is operating as it did when it was new, plenty of heat. It cost me $70 this was the best money that I ever spent.

I purchased a used 99 Taurus 3.0L LX with 100,000 miles from a municipal auction. The County in charge of service for his car is known for good REGULAR maintaince and I have no problems (for the last 6 months of use) with this car what-so-ever. I think if regular service is performed many problems can be avoided. Ignore/abuse any vehicle and you can expect trouble.

HELP Please!!!

I own a ford 99 Taurus, I am just having the hardest time to figure out what actually wrong with the car. It will be running fine then all of sudden the speedometer needle will drop to O and won't come back on, I can hear the engine rev up, but car won't catch up on speed the max it goes to maybe 10mph. Oh yeah it happens usually after 30minutes of driving it. I have been to several mechanics and they weren't able to find anything wrong with it. Actually they said bring the car back when it has "service engine soon light on" and that light has been intermittent. I was wondering if anybody can give me any advise. Autozone people told me that code is P0500 which implies something about speed sensor malfunction. Also, my car has 65000 miles and I did get my heater fixed like 2years ago and actually it still doesn't work and so quit spending money on it. Please help me

thanks

Asra.

As for the speedometer, it is probably a computer chip in the transmission. We had that same problem and thought our trans. was dying, but we took it to a local Trans shop and they found the problem right away. $150 to fix. That was a year ago, now the transmission is really going. It has 107K miles and we are unsure if we should rebuild it or get a new car.

We have also had many of the same problems others have had. But up until last year we hadn't really spent that much money on it, except for new brakes and turning of the rotors of course.

The windshield wipers on my '99 Taurus wagon have a mind of their own. They activate at random times, whether the vehicle is moving or not, rain or shine, hot or cold. I rented a new Taurus a few years ago and it did the same thing. I have read about the experiences of other Taurus owners and I see that many others have observed this behavior, too. Isn't this, in fact, a design/manufacturing defect that Ford should resolve at no cost to their customers?

Hello, thanks for the comments. I recently purchased a 1999 Taurus for my daughter to take to college. of course I bought it from a salvage yard and had the engine rebuilt. apparently it had been overheated ad cracked the block. now that I can actually drive the vehicle I noticed that the transmission seems to slip going from first to second. from the looks of it maintenance was performed as scheduled on the transmission. the vehicle has 140,000 miles on it and I am not sure if I should invest in having the transmission rebuilt or if it even needs it. I only have $2000.00 in it so far so blue book still lists it at a higher resale and trade in value. other than that it seems to be fine. any help in helping me decide would be great.thanks.

Speed sensor on these will let you rev the engine. You can usually pickup speed a little, but the transmission will not change right. I am thinking a speed sensor cost about 40.
