I am another frustrated 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee owner! My driver side door lock made this horrible grinding sound and wouldn't lock unless you did it manually. I dealt with it for months and broke down to get it fixed. $200 for the new lock motor and $100 for labor. I am very upset since this wasn't covered in my extended warranty!! Only the window motor! Jeep should be aware of this problem and recall it...
I read the above comments on the tail light issues and proceeded to fix mine. I used a part of a bobby pin cut to about 1 inch and wedged it between the metal tab and the plastic retainer ring,, this will not give way and will keep the tab up for a better connection. This took less than 10 minutes and allows me to keep the money that it would cost to replace the light assembly.
I have a 2000 Grand Jeep Cherokee and am experiencing the growling of the locks in addition to the left tail gate light being out continuously after replacing the bulb, how can we fix this ourselves?
Adrena Christmas.
Same deal for me. I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, when the lights are on the brake lights don’t work. I have found a very cheap solution though… Instead of buying the $144.00 tail lamps… you just simply flick off your headlights every time you stomp on the brakes. Flip the switch then step on brakes, simple huh? Just one way of sticking it to the man.
I have a 2000 J.G.C and 2 of the 3 (not the center) brake lights suddenly stopped working. Does any body have an idea why both would stop working at the same time. This happens when the lights are off.
Thanks,
Jesse.
2000 JGC Door locks!
First the tail gate of my jeep started making that horrible squeaking noise. Then I found out it doesn't lock anymore. Then my passenger side door, followed by my driver side door and now believe it or not the rear doors are doing it too. Only three doors out of the five actually lock and I know the rest are going to go soon too. I hate getting in and out of my car and having to hear that noise and not to mention if I wanted to fix the problem it would cost about $1,000 dollars! $200 bucks a lock. Just another unhappy GJC owner.
TAIL LIGHT PROBLEM FIX.
The goal is to swap the back-up lamp holder with the stop lamp holder to correct problem.
Remove the two screws that hold the lens assembly. If you disconnect the electrical harness it will make the repair easier. Note the tab which must be depressed to remove the connector. With the lens assembly in hand turn the lamp holder (gray) for the stop lamp approximately 90 degrees then pull straight out. DO NOT FORCE.
Next, remove the (middle lamp) back-up light holder and bulb. Be sure not to mix up the bulbs, but do swap out the bulbs in the respective holders. Next, replace the back-up lamp holder with the stop lamp and then relocate in the stop socket of the lens assembly. Next, replace the stop holder with the back-up lamp and locate in the back-up socket. Reattach the wiring harness connection and install the lens assembly. You can also install a new lamp holder in the stop light location if you wish, but I have not had any success in locally locating the part without ordering one. I have made this repair to 4 other vehicles for friends in about 5 minutes. I would advise the purchase of new bulbs and replace the stop, back-up and turn so you will not have to go through the process of removing the lens assembly because of a burned out bulb due to general usage.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
The problem is the contacts of the lamp holder will become fatigued and no longer offer a proper connection and increases the circuit resistance at the contact points to the circuit board located within the lens assembly housing. This resistance is enough to cause a failure of the lamp even though the lamp is good. Additionally, the resistance is high enough to NOT indicate a fault to the diver information display panel. The only ways you will be informed of the problem is a courteous motorist or perform a test and observe the condition for your self. If you perform the test during the day be sure to turn on the headlamps. This causes enough of a voltage drop to set the problem.
Again, BE CAREFUL in removing the lamp holders and pay attention to the position when reinstalling. I damaged mine by inserting 180 degrees out. This is an easy repair and if done without purchasing the holder…. the cost is only time.

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee and I have experienced the same problems. What can you do about the noise when you lock the doors. It is only my rear that make the noise. I think we need to contact the makers of the vehicle!

Glad to hear I am not the only one with these problems.
I started hearing that grinding noise in the tailgate area after owning my vehicle for 5-1/2 years. I opened the door and removed the panel. I then proceeded to extract the power lock actuator and opened it to find out that part of the mechanism was broke. I do not know which one broke first. The worm gear inside the power lock actuator box or the helical gear that sits on top of the motor inside the power lock actuator. Called dealership and this part costs $76. I also have a problem with the left tail light. My jeeps light just blows out and has to be replaced every 4-6 months. This is almost as bad as the warped rotors that I had to pay for to get replaced.
The problem with my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee is different than all of yours. Right now I am setting her trying to fine out why my brake lights (left, right and center) are all on and no one is in the car and the head lights are off. Any ideas?
Perhaps you should start at the brake light switch or a fuse.
I'm not sure I understand how no one being in your car relates to the problem with your headlights.
Maybe you could give us more information.
I too am having trouble with both the passenger side front door lock and my brake lights not working when my lights are on. Has anyone checked into whether Jeep has issued a bulletin or recall on these issues? Perhaps the state department of consumer affairs would be interested in this issue as it seems to be a consistent problem?
I followed the directions from the post on January 1st, 2005 for fixing the tail lights. Thank you it was so easy! I printed out the directions and took it out to my frustrated husband and 5 minutes later we saved ourselves $300.00!!
My 2000 gcl also has the door lock problems. the 2 passanger side doors no longer unlock and they make a awful noise when I lock the jeep. I think I should start a web page so people can post about this problem and find out how common this is and get a recall.
I am in the final stages of purchasing a 2000 Jeep G. C and I took it on a test drive with the salesman and the auto lock doors at 15 mph and a ridiculas noise came from the locks. I told him this needed to be fixed and it was the driver and passenger side acuators. I will be checking the brake lights tomorrow before I sign any papers. I can't pass it up though, it is mint condition with 80,000 miles. It drives like a dream. I hope these problems that all of you are having are already taken care of by the previous owner.
Email me with any tips I might need as a jeep owner or info you can provide me with. Thanks
