Our 2000 JGC also has lock problem where the two passenger doors won't unlock automatically and it sounds like there's a duck in the door when you unlock with remote. We've just dealt with the hassle instead of getting it fixed b/c I think it should be recalled. I have yet to run into ONE person with this vehicle that doesn't have this problem.
Now just today, my husband was driving with the driver's side window down and it won't go back up. What a piece of junk! I'm contacting Jeep directly. Will post if I hear any good news, but doubt I will.
I have the same light problem with my 2000 JGC. The dealership keeps these sockets in stock and I'm there regularly. Had no idea the problem was so rampant. Advice posted was big help.
I to am having door lock problems. does anyone have a place where we can get after market actuators? also had to replace right side rear axle seal last year now the left side is leaking. also anyone else have a rear side window leaking water that get into the spare tire well?
I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee that has a clicking noise from the fuse panel as soon as I open the driver, s door. i think that whatever this noise is has prevented me from starting the jeep. all of the gauges on my dashboard are pegging along with the clicking. when I try to start the jeep it is dead. the charging system has all checked out OK!! help!! do it have anything to do with the security system?? scott, highland new york.
I tried the idea mentioned regarding the aluminum foil for repairing the brake lights in JGC. Now my brake lights only come on when the headlights are on and the rear lights for the headlights don't work. What went wrong?
I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee Laredo. The computer screen keeps telling me, I am having a rear tail lamp failure, when I start the engine and move into gear. I checked, all lights function. So I called a dealer, he was nice enough to suggest that one of the bulbs, even though it works, is not the correct factory bulb part number.. he said the computer only recognizes the correct bulbs. So, I replaced all bulbs will new ones, and right numbers.. and guess, what? I am still getting the rear tail light failure message! Now what? Any ideas?
I read everyone's common complaints about the door lock actuator failures and my 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo is no exception. Before my extended warranty expired, the driver door lock actuator only cost me $100.00 to fix, and now the passenger door lock actuator needs to be replaced. Of course, warranty has long expired. Dealership pays $58 for them! and charges consumers $76, plus 2 hours of labor (per Chilton's Repair Manual) for a repair cost of over $226.00 here in Greenville SC.
I complained about the high price for a cheap part because after market actuators are often times priced on the internet at only $10.00 each! The service manager wanted to know where I could get the parts so cheap so he could get them too! In the end, the service manager took some money off the bill and will only charge me $190. That's way too high too, but it was better than paying full price. Regarding the labor, I've been told door panel removals are not that hard and not that time consuming, but getting the panel off without damaging it cosmetically is a challenge for one who has never done it before... does anyone do this often and know the tricks?
This is a significant safety issue in my opinion, because the doors typically cannot be opened from the outside when they quack like that. Someone trying to rescue a passenger would have to resort to breaking a window to get the door open.
Jeep needs to address this. It is long overdue.
I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Laredo and yesterday the alarm went off so I hit the panic button then unlocked the doors. From this point on the key will only insert into its slot, but will not turn. I have disconnected the battery and tried to reset the alarm, have rocked the vehicle, and have slightly turned the wheels each direction to no avail the key still will not turn. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have also always had a difficult time with the key opening the door.
Thank-you
Valerie.
Wow. I've got a 98 Grand Cherokee Laredo and I've been driving it for a few months getting more and more irritated at the loud locks that don't work on my back doors unless I hit the keyless lock several times. Sometimes I get lucky and it will lock them right away, but that is only if the wind is blowing in the right direction and if the Titans won that week..
But now I am having the dreaded taillight problem, too, on my left side. Reverse and blinker work fine. Just the Brake/Tail light. I thought all my friends were crazy when they kept telling me my taillight was out because I would go check it a little while after being told and it would be working. A week went by and I finally saw it was not working. It is the whole bulb isn't meeting the contact points on the inside of the socket problem.. In other words, a short in it.
Easy to fix right? I was just going to bend the contact a small amount so it would touch the lamp better... I barely touched it with some needlenose pliers and it just fell off!! Kid you not. It almost disintigrated like so many ashes from a fire place. WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK! Do they make those things of mercury or what?
I went to try to move the Reverse light up to the tail light position, but it only has two wires and the taillight/brake light has three. I'm not sold on that approach yet.
Advance, Autozone, and O'Reiley were collectively about as much help as a flat tire.
Haven't tried the dealership or even the junkyard yet. I figure I'll find a socket to splice into place at the junkyard for a couple of bucks, but the crappy metal contacts will undoubtedly be just as bad. Kinda like replacing a flat tire with another tire with a slow leak.
Who is up for making our own rear light sockets? You could keep the plastic part that goes in and twists to lock into place... but then just go get a socket that allows 2 filament bulbs and redo it that way.
Hmm..

I have a 2000 G.C. where the directional lights will fail intermittently (left and right will both be failing). Since this comes and goes it has been hard to trouble shoot. When they are not working the hazard lights will still work. At times when I've pulled the fuse for this circuit and reinserted a few times I can get the lights to begin working again. Any ideas for areas of where I can look for the source of this problem.
I have a 2000 jeep cherokee classic 4.0 L
And my brake lights have suddenly gone out, I worked at the lights and found the bulbs all good, I checked the fuses, humm I thought it was funny there was no fuse diagram in the manual like it said... great. well I check all of those all OK, then my friend said it could be the break switch... what should I do. I need help so bad, everything works on my taillights, but my brakes. email me.

I have 2000 JGC LMTD I do not have the tail light problem (Yet)
My problem is the turn signal relay or it's socket
It was easy to fix at first I just pushed on the relay as if it came loose they would work again for a month or so. but now I have to apply upward pressure on it all the time just to get it to work
I would be upset if I bought a new relay for $50 or more and it is something else.
Anyone know of this problem?
I am in the same boat regarding the door locks. I am on the fourth door needing repair- each has cost me $300. Not only am I tired of the "Aflac" sound, but I can't afford the upkeep of this piece of junk anymore. Now, I am seeing that you can buy the actuators online or in a store for much less than taking it to the dealer. Has anyone actually replaced the actuator themselves? I'm clueless about cars and maintenance, but willing to give it a shot if it saves me some bucks and is safe. Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I have the JGC Limited and I am changing my fourth door lock today. The window for the second time. I have replaced the bulb in the back as I knew no better until I read these postings. I have the same tail light problem too (right rear).
How does a manufacturer become accountable for high frequency malfunctions with parts? How do we get Jeep to pick up the tab?
I have the same problem with the 2000 Grand Cherokee Door Locks. That duck noise started in the rear hatch last week and now the left side rear door has the same problem. If anyone has a place to get these actuators please let me know at Mountaineer_Lodge@yahoo.com.
