In my opinion the mx6 turbo is and will be a collector car. Overall the build quality of the early Mazda from Japan has proven itself as you still see the Mazda mx6 (up to 1992) and 626 (same car just 4 door) still cruising the roads. Typical repairs consist of front ball-joints, rotors, exhaust, rust in front of rear wheel well, and motor mount issues in automatics. Seat quality in the lx or gt models was very supportive. the car was secure at high speeds and very quick with relatively good gas mileage. Unless a lemon, these cars with regular maintenance and lots of undercoating in the right areas should provide lots of fun driving years. I am currently looking for a clean gt turbo, which is hard to find in Ontario.
Every car is different as to how the operate (meaning your clutch may be perfectly fine for this vehicle).
The best thing to do is spend $50 - $100 to have a qualified independent mechanic check out the car thoroughly, and preferably a mechanic who knows Mazdas. I looked at Toyota Paseo once that drove great and had no evident problems. The owner claimed it had all new parts (brakes, etc.) so the car was "perfect" and "needed nothing". Well, I took it to get inspected and she was 100% lying, so much so it would have taken something like $1,500 to put the car right! This for a car with a purchase price of $4,000.
The fact the your Mazda's owner actually admits there is a problem is a good sign, although he could just be hiding a lot more.

I got an '89 mx6 gt in September '06 with 230 000 km... it needed nothing, only I went ahead and replaced the 12 lifters, got a brand new clutch, and brakes. It was checked and fixed for Turbo and hose leaks, all belts were changed including its timing. The only performance mod I had done was hollowing the catalytic converter and opening the exhaust from the headers from factory to a 3'' wide open racing pipe and muffler. Its unrestricted and has the potential to ruin the cobra 5 liter mustang's reputation with anymore tuning.
I bought a 1989 mx6 a few months ago. Overall it runs great, with only two real problems; rust and radiator leaking.
Originnaly I had a 95 mx6 turbo, but my dad sold it because of the transmition, two years later I had to hunt down another mx6 only this time I wound up with an 88 mx6 lx automatic, and I couldnt be happier, only problem is the windows don't work, a little rust and oxidation, alignment shifts with hard turns, but I plan on fixing/replacing a lot. But I don't know a lot of places to find good parts for it.
I have had my 1989 MX6 GT for about a year now. So far I have had to Replace the Turbo and Half-shafts, but that's it. The car runs like a champ and looks like crap. The paint has sun damage, but no rust. It has 67K miles and I drive it every day. The window switches broken, but I splice wires to get them to go up and down. I am happier with this car than my new Chevy truck.
I just brought a 1988 gt turbo for $300.not bad. has a little rust and it needs all new brakes all around. i hope it will be a good car.
I could not be any happier with my '89 mx6.This car was a steal at $800, with 120k miles. Little fix its, like heater core, window switches, alternator, but it's how I grew to love this car. Been so good to me when I needed her. The person who can find an 89 mx6 should know right away if it's for them. Cars like this have a personality that new cars don't.
I just bought a 89 mx6 non turbo 5 speed. the car has 225 on it, but it runs like brand new, I'm currently having the all existant problem of body parts, I would love a body kit, but right now id like just to get some bumpers. does anyone know where to get parts from?
It's not really the car! It's how much care you put in to what you love. For example; oil changes, spark plugs and engines modifications! Don't blame the car, blame the owner!
My 91 Mx6 GT has 240,000 miles and all it needs is a turbo. Does anyone know where the best place to find a new/rebuilt/used turbo could be found?
If you are looking for a turbo, You might try Turbo City in California. They have both new and rebuilt and are very helpful.
I have a 1991 mx6 gt, auto, with 93000 km. It's my new project car, with a MSD ignition system, headers, cold air and 3" exhaust, it's a really fast car. The only problem I've had is with CV's and finding aftermarket parts.
I currently own a 1989 Mazda MX6 GT with about 180,000 miles, of which about 60,000 are mine. This is easily the most fun car to drive - a true sneaker! Most hot rodders see this car and chuckle... until all they see is my taillights! Very comfortable for in town or an across the state drive.
Sure there are maintenance issues - every car has them. This is my fifth Mazda. Two of them went nearly 300,000 miles before being retired, and two had 225,000 + before being totaled by not so very good drivers. I cried after each one passed away.
Current MX6 get 26 - 33 mpg city/hwy with more power and punch than anything in its class. Sorry for those who have not been as fortunate as I in buying good ones - keep looking!
