Own a 2002 LS - thankfully, no where near the problems that many have indicated here. It seems the 2000s were very problematic.
Only problem on mine that is recurring is the air bag indicator light is on now. My mechanic says there is a wire in the steer wheel that is likely broken. If I don't mind the light and the possibility of the airbag not functioning, it's not worth the repair.
Minor problems aside, I have driven the car up and down the coast of CA. Let me tell you, the car has been completely reliable. I'm glad to know that other drivers out there have had theirs up to 130 mph, too. No lights bells or whistles went off when I reached that speed, but my mind and body were a little overwhelmed, so I backed off.
Other than attracting CHP for minor speeding infractions, the car has been a real jewel. Plus, I bought it used w/17K miles, so saved $20K from the sticker.
Anyone interested in an extremely well maintained 2002 LS w/under 100K miles? Send me a note: craigsnider@yahoo.com.
Enjoy!
What a nightmare!
I've had my 2000 Lincoln LS for just over a year, and though I have not had any of the window problems everyone seems to be talking about. I have had many of the coil, spark plug, and brake problems. I bought this car used with 50,000 miles on it. I've put about 20,000 miles on it in a year and a half. I've spent roughly $3000 dollars on miscellaneous problems that everyone else has mentioned. I can feel my A. C blowing infrequent gusts of cold air, so that's probably about to go. Also, the windows do seem to be weakening as well. I actually stumbled onto this site while researching why my airbag light is flashing then staying on. Probably have to drop another grand or so on that. The only fun I've had since I bought this car has been reading everyones postings, and seeing everyone else is going through the same problems. At least I'm not the only one, and I am so down for a class action lawsuit. Please let me know of any updates:connorappraiser@aol.com thanks.
2002 Lincoln LS V8 88,000 miles. This car has been up and down and across the country many times over. The ONLY problem I had was a bad thermostat. I read a comment in here about it being a slow vehicle, well he must use crappy gas or something. I put on a magnaflow exhaust and a cold air intake. That lets the car breath excellent. I have never lost to a mustang gt. The exhaust note coming out of the mufflers when I get on it is sick. I did have the exhaust done without the resonators they are just extra weight and restrict the exhaust. I live in Tucson and when I drive to San Diego I get 30.3 mpg if I stay under 90. I had the car up to 140 mph no shakes or shimmy's. Maybe I got lucky I don't know, but I love this car and plan on buying another the 2006 since it was the last year of production. I also have an 2004 LS V8 11,000 no problems in that one either, but maybe time will tell. By the way I really don't like ford products, but the 2 LS's that I have are great.
I have a 2002 LS Sport with the SST shift and 65k and I love it, only problem I'm having now is my Check Engine light is on. I think my O2 sensor is bad cause I let someone drive my car and they put cheap gas in it. It was misfiring and running rough so I put some octane booster in it and high octane gas and now its running better, but my check engine light is still on. When I get on the high it sputters a little.
I love the car, I have a little fogging of my left head light, but its not bad yet. Besides that it has 15% window tint, 7inch flip out dvd/radio in the dash. 3 kicker 10" in the trunk with a 2000 watt amp.
Any help on the O2 sensor?
Oil burning smells coming into the car are most likely a leaky valve cover gasket. This allows oil to also enter the spark plug chamber and short out the ignition coils, which causes rough running, stumbling, hesitation, and other driveability problems.
I have no problems with it just the engine light and the airbag light are both on. how can I fix the airbag light? do you guys know anybody?of course non expensive am trying to sell it. my mech told me the engine light is the catalyc convertr...let me know..mitch..huevodrak@yahoo.com.
WOW, something funny, I had my 2002 LS for 4 days, I spent an off the F ing wall $1600,are you listening, in 4 days, air filter fuel filter oil change inspection, light bulbs, ac filter- 450,then catalayc converter and exhaust manifold $1250, I am selling this asap, it's ridiculous, you have to be kiddig me, I'm so vexed right now, but hey I should have read the reviews before purchasing, this is only day five, LMAO, guess I'm in for a long ride, but hey at least it's not only me.
Just bought an 04 LS with 24k miles on it. Car looks sharp & drives well so I buy it. Next day, got this big winding noise coming from under the hood. Gets real bad when I turn. Gets worse when I turn real sharp (like pulling into a parking spot). So I figure the power steering pump. Pop the hood, look at the pump and follow the line up to the reservoir to find the power steering fluid bubbling (or boiling?). Now is that normal??? lol. Probably gonna return the car since it's within the 3-day money back guarantee thing.
My wife and I purchased a 2001 LS V6 in 2003 with 17,000 miles on it, and it has been a good car with exception of some of the same issues that you see here.
For instance the passenger headlight fogged up, which I fixed by "venting" the housing.
Both front window regulators had to be replaced within 1 week of each other about a year ago.
The third brake light burns out almost instantly after replacing it.
Now at 60,000 miles we are having an engine overheat issue and air conditioning problems. I've been told by my mechanic (a very close friend) that Lincoln has a T.S.B. (Technical Service Bulletin) for the fan motor on these cars (2000-2003). It is a hydraulically operated fan that works off of the power-steering pump and it either doesn't kick in or is intermittent, here is a website that describes the nature of this problem and it's corrective action.

I can also tell that it is time to change the struts, and that will bring light to a few other issues like ball joints and tie rod ends. It's really a shame that Lincoln has let their quality get so poor.
Overall the car is beautiful and drives very well, but it seems that we might be reaching the "nickle and dime you to death" period. Money is very tight right now, and we aren't sure if we should get rid of it and go import, or fix it and run it into the ground. Any suggestions?
Best of luck to all, San Diego Sean.
I'm a single mother and needed a good dependable car, I came across this very nice looking car a Lincoln Ls. I purchased it because I thought they lived up to there name. I trusted I would have a good reliable car well needless to say just like everyone else I too have experienced all the same problems. I now take the bus with my child in tow because my car keeps on breaking down. I live in Utah where it snows! Would anyone like to get some sort of law suit going? Feel free to call Melisa 801-688-1101.
I found this site while investigating an overheating problem. I must say this is the best car I have ever owned. Had a BMW before. Also a nice car, but not even close to this 2000 Lincoln LS V6 5 speed sport edition. I have only had two problems in five years and 50,000 miles. Had Rear electric window cranks replaced which Ford owned up to and replaced both free even though only one was bad. And now an intermittent cooling problem. I am amazed at how this car can keep running and not strand me even though it has a major coolant issue. My BMW had a new problem every 3 months and stranded me a few times, once due to a cooling issue when the plastic bladed water pump gave up the ghost. Kind of surprised a BMW would take this approach with the amount of mony they charge and the longevity they have making quality cars.
My current overheating problem seems to be related to losing water over time from a spot on the front of the engine and at the top. Seems like it is a radiator hose when it hisses, but I need to take the top shroud off and other stuff to tell for sure. Back twenty years ago when you had a bad hose, forget about going anywhere. I can go anywhere from 30 miles to about a 100 miles depending on how I drive. So that has me puzzled. Does anyone know anything about what kind of hoses they use and can you get them at places like Autozone. By the way where is the thermostat located? I may change that just to be sure it is not aggravating things.
Well I guess I should join the rest... I have had my 2000 Lincoln LS for almost 2 yrs now.. i have to say for the first year I had it only 39,000 miles on it, was a great car!! Now it has 93,000 yes I travel and do a lot of driving. Bought the car has a nice sporty, but luxury look to it. Forget all that I guess because now I am having issues. I have a check engine light that is on. I replaced both oxygen sensors and that was $500 right there. Did it help? Of course not so I went to my mechanic and he said that a possible coolant flush would help because the car is starting to overheat now as well. It only overheats after the car is running for about a hour or more then the temperature gauge starts to rise, and if you start using the air conditioner it even over heats faster. Any suggestions? Somebody mentioned the Water Pump is a major problem on these cars. Do my problems sound familiar? To be honest I don't have the time, money and energy to be putting into this car I just want to basically get it fixed and sell it!! But who is going to buy with a check engine light? Any feedback would be great also I am interested in this law suit that people are discussing. I am not all talk either serious about it. If you need anything from me please email me cwachholz13@hotmail.com I can provide receipts, whatever is needed.
I own a 2001 Lincoln LS V8. I purchased this car in 2004 with only 42,474 miles and for a great price. It currently has 68,667 miles. I don't drive this car everyday. This was my dream car; even purchased the extended warranty which expired in July of this year. I have since replaced two window regulators 1-rear driver side and 1-front drive side (covered under warranty) ; currently need to replace the front passenger side (not covered). I also have the pleasure of having the let the driver side window down in order to exit. I found this site while looking to see if there was a recall or something on these issues, but nevertheless, I guess I'm stuck. I really loved this car. I'll just keep driving my 99 Ford Explorer with over 165,000 miles and no problems and save my dream car for the weekends. I am so disappointed.
2002 LS V8 97K miles, 3rd owner, purchased with 94K miles May 2007. My AC was blowing hot air. The DCCV went out. Ford fixed it for free since it happen in the first week.
Link on how to fix it. I printed and took to ford with me and showed them. AC great now.

A month later drove to NC from Ohio (500 miles one way) and when I got home I started to notice a white smoke cloud from tail pipe when starting. I have always put in 92 premium, but wondered what theprev. owner put in. I had oil changed with synthetic and no white smoke since.
Now I notice a burning oil smell after driving for 10 min. in town. It's when I stop or go through a drive up I can smell it. Don't notice with windows up. Garage smells for a few then all goes away. Let me know what you think it may be.
At speeds of 70-80 my steering wheel starts to shake. Rotors?? $$$. Was told to get "Road Force test" may go tomorrow. I am going to get it winterized as well costing me 300.00 at valvoline. I guess I have a leaking valve cover gasket to get repaired. I love this car. I have owned many cars and this is my favorite car ever. I liked my 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, but that car was a lemon. I would have to say it was my next best car to drive.
My car goes into reverse rough (transmission?)
I hope to get the Lincoln MKZ or (Zepyher) next. I read Lincolns are better then Cadillacs. Opinions? Cadillac has a hot new car out, but not sure of the name yet. Saw it a few days ago. Small with back end up in air a bit (sharp!)
Just found out the Cadillac I was seeing around town and it is the 2008 CTS. That is a sharp car. Lincoln or Caddy? I have heard the Lincolns are better.
