My 2000 GLS V6 started displaying "Emission Workshop" message, and I took it to the dealer...
Their report said that it was an O2 sensor, and they wanted some $800 to replace it...
I declined, and kept on driving...
The message cleared itself, and the car drives fine, however, now I am experiencing problems with fuel efficiency display - it is going crazy!
Just last night I was presumably driving a car that had 123 miles/gallon efficiency! (Can a Prius do that?)
Joking aside, anyone had a similar experience?
I bought a 2000 Passat GLS Turbo a couple of weeks ago for $9200 with 58k miles. When I bought it one headlamp light bulb was out, so I check the manual that instructed me to see dealer. I decided to fix it myself and removed the air intake to access the headlamp and replace the bulb for $14.88. Later that day the Emissions Workshop and Check Engine light came on. I thought maybe this was due to unplugging the light bulb. I tried the battery disconnect trick, but nothing changed. Any other advise? PLK
I have a 2000 passat wagon. 130,000. Runs great. Got an oil change two weeks ago and 3 days after that the check engine ("Emissions Workshop") light came on. The oil change place reset the sensor and said don't worry about it. Today it came back on.
What should I do?
3 months ago I purchased my 2000 GLS V6 5 Spd, I love the power and the way the car drives. The Emissions Workshop light and Check Engine came on about 3 weeks ago. I ignored it for a few days and it went off. Must have healed itself. Yesterday it came on again. I don't perceive any changes in performance so I am hoping for the heal itself approach again. It seems that VW has over sensitized the sensors for the 2000, but we will see. If not, I am willing to live with an extra light on the dash, unless performance slips, then we'll deal with it.
I too, have recently acquired a '00 Passat wagon with 1.8T engine... my Jetta Diesel was crushed from behind : (
The Emission light recently came on - with the comment on dash indicating "Emission Workshop!" - took it to a local and came up with code that was VW readable only "P1176" has something to do with emissions - probably O2 sensor VW said, but would have to put it on their machine to test (of course) - I was also told there was NOT an extension of the emissions warranty to 100k.
I would like to hear where folks get their info so I can validate before its too late (98k) and have them reset or whatever has to occur to make the lights go away - it's disconcerting to have warning lights on all the time. Thanks!
Mine is 2001 passat GLX 4motion V6 which I bought new. I have the same message several years ago. A local mechanics guessed that could be O2 sensor and I had it replaced for a little more than $100 (yeah, I am lucky). However the message appeared several month again, and disappeared later. Since then I have got the message several times a year and I just ignored it. It doesn't seem to affect the performance of the car. My mileage is just over 70k so I am going to do a smog check when the message pops up again.
By the way, I noticed that the suspension creaks and from the web I read a lot of postings on similar issue (control arm). Do you guys have the problem?
My local VW dealer sucks. Once they recommended replacing a fluid tank for several hundred bucks. I refused it. Later I had my local mechanics check the item and there was nothing wrong with it!
Generally you need to be a mechanics to drive VW cars. Otherwise you would better off leasing a BMW considering the total cost.
This thread is helpful.
I just got a 2000 passat gls 1.8t... shortly after getting the car I read this forum = (... I then became very happy that the "EMISSION WORKSHOP!" light wasnt on in my car. Thirty minutes later I drove the car to school and was alarmed by the dreadful "EMISSIONS WORKSHOP!" message on my display... WHAT HAVE I GOT MYSELF INTO!!!
I have a 2001 Passat GLX (V6) and the "EMISSIONS WORKSHOP!" light came on a month ago and I called the dealer who suggested that I tighten the gas cap (which did nothing to fix the problem). The light went out after a week and reappeared a few days ago. I took the car in today and they replaced the solenoid valve. The light is out now, but I guess we will have to wait to see if it comes back on in another month!
December '06 I bought a 2000 Passat GLS 4motion for my wife for Christmas. The vehicle had 103,000 Km. The fisrt issue we had with the vehicle was one of the oil seals went only a couple of weeks after buying it. The dealer was good about this and swallowed a $700 shop bill for this. The latest gift that keeps on giving is the check engine light and the Emissions Workshop! warning that comes with it. I have unhooked the battery a few times that got rid of the light temporarily. The light seems to come on when the car is at idle in traffic or at the drive thru. It has corrected itself twice, but for the life of me I don't know what the issue is??? Other than that the performance of the car has not sufferred any. The vehicle is the stickiest I have ever driven in the snow and the handling matches or superseeds that of any sedan I have ever driven. Fuel wise she likes to drink the gas and it is recomended to use 91 octane only.
WE just, but a 2000 GLS 2.0T Passat 5 days ago and our check engine/ emissions workshop light just came on. I am terrified that it might be an actual problem because I don't think it is still under warranty with 68k miles on it. Is there realy a computer re-program rcall on it? a vacuum hose recall? and a fuel tank assembly recall?
2000 VW Passat. Steering rack assembly failure (90k), anyone else have this problem? Regarding the recall posted on July 26, 2007. True for the last two, not sure about program recall.
I just had my "Emissions Factory!" light come up with the service code being "P0411" I have to drive home in 5 days about 755 miles. I am taking it to the dealer to have the (4) vacuum hoses replaced and that's all. Could I make it home without taking it to the dealer?
Also I checked all the hoses I could and didn't see any cracks.
2001 Passat GLX 4Motion V6 111,000 miles.
Persistent "Emissions Workshop" messages. Reset lasts for a month or so. Changed vacuum hoses. Changed gas cap. Dealer says its the cat-converter. ($1,500) Indie mechanic says not cat. Dealer says no computer re-program available.
Definitely feel stuck as I could throw thousands and thousands at a problem that might not get resolved.
I have a 2000 VW Passat currently in the shop for a steering rack replacement. I have 87,000 miles on the car. Is there an issue with the steering racks?
I have a 2000 Passat GLS sedan with the v6 engine. I have had it for the past 4 years. My "check engine light, EMISSIONS WORKSHOP LIGHT" has been coming on for 2 years now. I have had it reset at the dealer and then it just comes back on in a few weeks or so. It is very annoying. I had it scanned at a tire place and it listed 3 or 4 possible answers to it. I changed the gas cap and made sure it was tight, but it made no difference. The car also makes a weird jumping forward and kind of throws you suddenly when the car is idling and when you step on the gas to move it. I just keep on going. It has 135,000 miles and runs OK, apart from these problems. I am going to try the tightening of the battery like was suggested on this site for the reseting of the code. Overall I would have to say that the Passat is a big waste of money, because I have put about $3000 into fixing it in the past 3 years.
