How are you getting 19MPG? My wife can barely manage 13MPG and she drives like an old grandma (light-footed). hers has 87,000 miles on it. Other than the fuel economy it is a nice vehicle. Oh and on an Isuzu forum, most claimed similar MPG of 12-14. Ours does NOT use oil either, and its in Oregon so its in great shape. We are currently selling it due to poor MPG. hoping to get $10,500 for it because we paid $11,999 2 months ago!!

For all those complaining of oil consumption, I did the following and it completely cured oil burning:

1. Replace the PCV valve. My Trooper has 60K miles, and the PCV was gunked closed. I have done all the factory maintenance, and I don't remember ever replacing the PCV. This valve not working was clearly allowing water to collect in the crankcase and break down the oil.

This consists of loosening one hose clamp, pulling the PCV out of the valve cover, and repeating the process in reverse.

2. Pull the EGR valve, spray the carbon off of it using carb cleaner, then put it back in. There is a pintle that is clearly visible when you remove the valve--it should slide in and out with a very light touch. Replace the gasket the EGR valve sits on, because it's probably bubbled up and leaky. I'm not sure of the methodology, but many on usenet feel this causes increased oil consumption.

This is another easy one: this is on top of the intake manifold at the rear. Remove the stupid black "V6" plastic cover, remove two bolts, and it comes off.

I paid less than $10 for both of the parts required. Total labor was 10 minutes. I did this 3,000 miles ago and have burned no oil since; I was going through a quart every 500 miles.

I just purchased an '01 and --yep, it's an oil hog. I am going to try all the classic fixes -pcv, egr, seafoam and I'll post an update...

To be continued.

I have a 2001 LS 2WD bought new. Currently I have 115k miles on it. I love my truck - yes, the mileage could be better (I consistently get 16-17; 18-20 on pure highway, and once got 22 while traveling in the Rockies!!?!), it does take a tad of extra oil (1 qt every 3k), and it is by no means something you want to sling around the corners.

But the upright seating position (I'm 6'3"), huge sunroof, and cavernous interior can't be beat. It's perfectly sized for me, and with a few suspension changes (new Monroe adjustables; stabilizer inserts) she is much more conducive to my aggressive driving style. Also, and I know I'm 'new school', but there's nothing like the 'growl' of the 3.5 DOHC.

I'm finally ready for brakes, another set of shocks (under warranty), and other minor maintenance items. I did have to put a new transmission in at 35k - fully covered by Isuzu, and replaced in two days (apparently it's a French-designed GM unit).

Again - I (and my family) love it for the room we have without having to resort to a Tahoe or Expedition-sized vehicle.

Too bad Isuzu can't find it's butt with both hands these days - a clean sheet design Trooper, and a crossover wagon would certainly gain them much more interest than the rebadged GM crap they sell now. It's sad, really - I feel the Trooper, like an older Range Rover or Land Cruiser, has a timeless design to it - simple, not overstated... competent.

I purchased my 2001 Trooper in February 2007, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! It only had 30,000 miles on it when I got it, and I was afraid that with low miles for the year that this may be a disaster car. I was very impressed to hear so many good things about this car. It does burn a lot of gas with the current gas prices, but other than that no complaints...

I have a 2001 trooper aniversary eddition and before my 60000 mile tune up I was getting 18mpg and since the tune up I get 10-13 mpg. I have had it in a few times since for blowing the head gasket and new plugs, each time looking into a reason for the low milleage and still no clue. It is being worked on at Precision imports manchester NH. It is in right now becasue I went to pepboys and they replaced the brakes and now the rear drive tod lights keep flashing. I think they unpluged a sensor or something. Took it to precision and they are looking for the wire. Any ideas on my MPG issue???

Also if you have any problems with having you're high beams on and then whenever you use the turn signal the highbeams shut off, OR you have the cruise control on and the cruise control shuts off when you turn on the headlights it is an easy fix no one on the north shore could figure out.

Just unplug the battery, and unplug the computer and let the computers charge go dead, when you plug it all back in it will reset itself and everything is good as new.

Any ideas on the terrible milleage email me please

pauljjy@gmail.com.

Any other questions ill try to answer anytime.

Great thanks.

Paul.

I have a 1997 Trooper... LS 4wd...122,000..I love it... but there is a ticking in the engine. My mech can't figure it out. He messed with the valves... no change...it is loudest when the engine in cold.. and gets faster upon acceleration... sometimes it will just stop... then start up again quietly.. then louder. Any ideas? I'm worried about the engine obviously...thanks.

Hi I bought a 2000 Trooper LS back in March of 07 with 119k and I can honestly say I have not had any major problems yet. The only draw back I have is the leg room for the driver.I'm a tall guy and I'll need about 2-3 more inches should do. My wife is small and it swallows her. Great vehicle hope it lasts forever.

I really love this suv from the start I saw it on a used car lot, it stood out from all the rest. I have never seen such a nice vehicle like that at the time and this was in 2005. I replaced the brakes, wheels, transmission fluid, filters, spark plugs, and all basics. I will always keep this vehicle no mater what it takes. I use Lucas oil with my oil change and it does not burn oil at all. I believe the Japans messed up when they discontinued making troopers. I have driven it to Florida to ST. Louis no problem. This is the first vehicle I feel confident in driving any where. Even today people like my vehicle and I find it quite strange with all the compitition out there. Thankyou for your time.
