Have 1999 Alero LS. In a nutshell; multiple brake, hub bearing and suspension repairs. Security light, security light, and security light.
I own a 2000 Alero GLS with the 3.4L V6. I bought the car new and now, 8 years and 114,000 miles later, I am letting it go. The final straw was the failure of the manifold resulting in the car severely overheating and causing major damage to the engine. I am not willing to pay more than the car is worth to fix it this time. There have been too many other repairs required and I am just tired of throwing money into it. The last couple years I have only kept it to avoid taking on a car payment. I really like the styling of the car, and it had plenty of power and with the suspension package, it handled really well. I have enjoyed the car, there have just been too many costly repairs over the years.
A/C repaired 4 times, now compressor is shot.
Fan speed control missing first 2 speeds after it was already replaced 2 years ago for same problem.
Front brake rotors warped 2 different times within 3 years / excessive brake pad wear * (fixed once during warranty)
Fuel pump in tank stopped working before the car was 2 years old.
Horn stopped working 2 years ago, expensive to fix due to design.
Power windows stopped working in 3 of the 4 doors (glass fell down), driver's door was fixed but 2 back door windows were bolted in the up position due to the $400+ each door to fix.
Front end suspension required part replacement very early on in the car's life due to noisy popping noise and wheel shake at speed.
Dome light fell out of the headliner.
Dash started to peel when car was 3 years old.
Faulty ignition switch caused numerous stranded situations while waiting for "false" security alarm to reset.
So the manifold failure was all I could take. I will miss the car, but not the financial uncertainty. I believe many of these issues are design related.
My wife owns a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero that she bought brand new.
At 45,000 miles it had to have the front wheel bearings replaced, dealership replaced under warranty.
In November 2006 had to replace them again at 90,000 miles., Timkins cost $120 each plus about 6 hours labor and a $85 alignment.
Transmission replaced November 2007 at 108,000 miles.
June 2008 passenger side transmission seal blew out, transmission shop would not cover under warranty so it cost me $185 to have that done.
New spark plugs, boots, and coil pack carrier at 110,000 miles due to miss/hesitation/rough idle/poor fuel economy.
Blower resistor replaced August 2008 at 130,000 miles, 3 days later new resistor burned up -- it's the circuit board type which costs me $30 at parts store.
Engine running rough again, now it needs new timing chain, gears, and chain tensioner.
Parts will be $350 and labor about $350. Also need to do water pump while I'm there so that's another $200 in parts plus the extra labor.
The dash is pealing, moon roof leaks, cup holder on back of center console broke off -- cheap plastic junk.
Replaced fuel filter at 112,000 miles.
Engine light keeps coming on, code says "Evaporative emissions leak small." Already put new gas cap on, problem is the vent hose from tank up to filler is cracked, royal pain to get to short of dropping tank.
Looked at a new car to replace it and the dealership will only give me $700 trade in. If I fix all the problems they'll give me $1,500.
I will never own one of these again, or any other GM product for that matter. I'm going import for better mileage.
