I have a 2000 Maxima GLE with 200,000 miles, had the trans fluid changed once and a couple of tuneups, maybe just once. Car has gotten to where it dies when I put it into Park. Happens about 50 % of the time. Other than that it runs great, has plenty of power. Any ideas about the Park thing?

I own 2000 maxima it has 133K miles on it. I replaced coils twice in past 6 months. Now my car is running rough when I get it to 60 mph. I took it to mechanic and he said it is the transmission sliping gears so then I went to the transmission shop and they said it is not he transmission, but it is probably the catalytic convertor once again I took it to the muffler shop and they said it is not the catalytic problem, but may be something is wrong with my engine. so, now the car is parcked at a local engine shop and waiting to hear what they have to say. Please advice what you guys think of it.

To the original poster:

You should check your transmission fluid. If that is not the problem, then it is most likely your MAF.

Purchased 2000 SE 127,000km in January,In Feb noticed a stutter in first 5 min driving on cold days (most days are in Nova Scotia) then SE light came on late Feb, took to dealer replaced rear oxygen sensor $400.00, and they said MAF at 95% should replace soon. Still stuttered, March 31 SES light back on.. looks like I will try and replace MAF myself from NAPA and see if that helps.. Can't believe all the posts on this issue and can't believe I didn't check them before buying : (

Otherwise great ride.

I have a 2003 Maxima SE. Ran great for almost four years, now its been in the shop about 6 times in 2 months. Last time it was in I had a to fix an oil leak, then when it was returned the steering wheel shakes badly when I go over 60mph. Told it was a dented rim I would have to replace for 400 bucks. Rotated and balanced tires three times at three different Nissans because each place told me the other did it wrong. Replaced 4 headlight bulbs, also lights on the thermostat are all out. BOSE system won't play any CD's unless car has been running for a half hour even if it's a brand new CD. The SES is now one after it was just on 3 months ago when they replaced my air filter. Just replaced muffler at 93k...going to Nissan Saturday and can't even express my anger at how much this car has cost me. Not even sure now if its OK to drive with this SES light on!

I purchased my 2000 Maxima GLE in 2004 with 45K miles on it.

65K - Sun roof motor ($300)

75K - New Rear Struts ($400)

80K - SES light ($600 all new coils)

100K - Bucking, Pinging & Stalling (New OEM Plugs $300)

108K - Pinging & Rough Engine When Cold (I am broke, car has eaten me out of house and home)

I still owe $9,000 on this piece of crap. My next car will be a Toyota!!!

At 116k miles, I had the 'stalling at stop light/sign' problem start. Actually... it wouldn't stay on unless I kept my foot on the gas. Dealership said it was the ECM and wanted $1600 (parts & labor) to replace. Took it to a local garage, had a refurbished one shipped from Cali and it ran PERFECT for about 24 hours. Just walked in the door and saw this forum online. The SES light started flashing and got an engine-shaking rough idle.. going to check out for a misfire now. Will be back to let everyone know...thanks.

Hello and help! I have 2000 Maxima SE, babied and treated well with 75,000. Warning light came on. Dealership shocked me with $2100 estimate to replace ECM, 2 motor mounts, IAC, plus labor. What can I do? They said the motor mounts took out all the rest. Most expense part is 850 they say for the ECM.

I know nothing about cars. What is going on? The car runs smoothly since I left their shop last week and the light hasn't come back on. I just had my 75.000 mile check up too. Over the four and half years I've owned it I've spent so much on many warning lights.

I took it to my neighborhood mechanic, very honest man. He said he saw just a little wear on a motor mount. And he agrees the car runs well. How could the car run if the ECM was shorted out like the dealership said? I'm so perplexed. I keep thinking they take advantage of us women. But my husband knows no more about it.

Thank you, Georgeanne.

Please reply if you can with some kind of advice. Should I take it to a car dealer and trade it in while it runs well? And no light is on.

Bought a used 1998 Nissan Maxima with 80000 miles. Within one month of purchase the SES light turned on. Took to mechanic and he couldn’t figure out why and suggested a dealer look at it. The dealer says it's the vent control valve and canister ($500) and the air fuel induction service for ($175). After reading all of these comments, I’m selling this car and buying a Toyota or Honda, which was my first inclination!

Own a 2001 GLE that has ~114k. Have replaced the Mass Airflow Sensor, drivers side front wheel bearing, and am now having a mechanic replace a coil on the 6th cylinder. After reading all the posts I've learned that: A) I could've replaced the coil myself, and B) Need to think about trading it off! Thanks for all the info though.

I have a 2000 Maxima SE, and I don't worry about the check engine light at all. My light has been on for about oh 1.5 years/40,000 miles or so, and in that time span I have driven from SE North Carolina to Boston and back, three times in 14 hour increments without any issue at all.

Prior to this I drove to Baltimore MD every other weekend from NC and back without issue. This has been in addition to my daily driving which, until recently, has been 2+ hours a day on highway at speeds of 85-100 mph. I have been asleep twice and woken up to my friend driving at 134mph and 117mph. I have pushed and pushed this car, and at 110,000 miles it is still running strong. Quite frankly a little light that has been there for this long without causing any problems doesn't concern me. I just need to figure out how to pass my emissions... I think I'll try that GTP stuff.

The only other issue is the car bucking on start up (mine has for a year plus now). I just let it warm up prior to driving.

Overall this car has given me really no major issues, and has been very reliable.

Oh, and I've also been in two front end fender benders, and smashed a curb on the front right tire at 30 mph. Even after that, no major problems. This car is sweet.

Have a 2000 Maxima SE, at 114,000KM. The car runs well (yes, I had my share of check engine light, ignition coil gone bad; hiccup on cold start, etc. experiences) and I have not noticed any significant noises from the front end. Dealer tells me that the front end control arm ball joints are worn and need to be replaced, at $800. I don't drive aggressively, and most of the mileage is driven in the city on good pavement. Can this be possible? Any similar experiences from anyone out there?

I have a 2000 Maxima SE with 112K miles. It failed emission inspection in May 07 due to SES light on with Diagnostic Trouble Code P0420. The SES light has been on for 1.5 years, but the car has been running fine during all that time. I took it to Meineke on 6/2/07. They charged me $48 to look at it and told me that there is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) from Nissan and I should take it to the dealer to take care of it. I printed the TSB NTB00-070B dated June 7, 2004 and read it. It appears that the TSB only applies to Maxima 2000-2001 sold in CA only (not those with Federal Emissions Spec) and I live in MA. I called my local Nissan dealer and was told that it may have something to do with the ignition coil (s) and I have set up an appointment to bring it in this week. I am having a second thought after reading all the horrible stories posted by other Maxima owners. On the other hand I need to get the car passed the emission inspection in about 5 weeks. I would appreciate any suggestions for a best course of action from folks who have experienced similar problems out there. Thanks from MA.
