Hmm this is interesting, cause my friend has a 2000 Intrepid with almost 150,000 on it, and it runs like it's brand new. They put in high grade fuel and synthetic oil, and it runs like a charm (I've driven it countless times), and in my family we've had nothing but Dodges and Chrysler's, and they've all lasted long past 200,000 miles, and now we're on our 2 first generation Neon's - 1 with over 230,000, and the other just past 200,000.

I am wondering if anyone can help me. I have a 2000 chrysler intrepid and I am wondering if anyone has had this problem. I am driving on a highway and when I go to slow my car down it stalls. I can restart it right away, but it keeps stalling for a while after. It is only when I go around 60km or more. I had the timing chain replace a couple weeks ago, but it is still stalling. I had the car into a chrysler dealership and they cannot find the problem.

I have had the exact same problem and the dealer cannot find the cause. Any luck finding a solution?

HELP!!! 2000 Dodge Chrysler 2.7L engine failure. While researching the internet a couple of weeks ago I came across a blog giving me the name and number of a company hired by DaimlerChrysler to look at these engine problems on a case by case basis. I've been offered an amount that won't even cover the labor to replace it. Of course there is always a stipulation which is to sign a hold harmless agreement. Is there going to be a class action suit SOON or should I take the offer? Something is better than nothing? What happen if I replace the motor and it happens again? New motor, but same VIN number so I'm out of luck again.

Me too Me too!

I have the same problems! 2000 intrepid - purchased New. Take care of it like a baby. at 40,000 mile the oil light starts flicking after 20 minutes of running when you come to a stop. Now at 50K it stalls randomly for no reason, 50mph or 20 mph doesn't matter. It starts right up after turning off and back on. So Sign me up for a law suit! Oh the dealer can't find anything wrong for the stalling (3 times and out of warranty) and they replaced the oil pressure light, but it still flickered the next day. When I suggested the oil pump they said no way. bassano@bigfoot.com

Well I'm in the same boat as countless other people. I bought the car last June (2001 Dodge Stratus with 27K on it). I drove it home on a Saturday night and Sunday morning I turned it on and it sounded like my engine was suddenly a diesel engine. The dealership towed it back in and said that the timing chain was defective and that they would replace it. Since they were so helpful, I went through with buying the car. Despite having several repairs to my car since June, I did not suspect anything amiss until the timing chain suddenly broke again 8 months after it being replaced. My warranty is up now and while I have my maintenance records, I do not have the records of the previous owner. I should find out tomorrow what they (the dealership) suggest me doing to fix the car, but from the sound of it, now that the dealership is not responsible for paying for it, they will most likely suggest a new engine. I cannot believe that I did not know about this before I bought my car. Make sure you tell anyone you know about this so that no one else has to suffer the financial stresses this brings on. I am a college student and have seen the money I worked so hard for be drained from my saving account and it makes me sick!

I recently inherited a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with the 2.7 engine from my father. He took great care of this vehicle and I was shocked when the oil light came on when I stopped to get gas. It comes on only when the engine is idling at 700 or less and only when it has warmed up. After seeing all the problems others seem to be having with this engine I contacted a mechanic and he will be checking it out tomorrow. I am going to tell him all the advice I got from the others on this page and will update you as to the outcome of his work. I'm going to use the synthetic oil and De-sludge the engine along with replacing any parts he deems necessary at this time. I hope to get another 100,000 miles out of this car before I have to do any major repairs. What are my chances of that happening?

We just bought a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 3 days ago with 60,000 miles on it. It came from a private seller, not one of those rip-off dealers. The main driver of it was an old guy who babied it everywhere. Driving it around town, it sounds like its running very well, with no signs of any problems. Though, I'm wandering if mine is going to be doomed by the same problem. I hope not, it really is a nice car.

I recently got rid of my 1999 2.7 liter Intrepid. The engine with 70K miles virtually destroyed itself in a couple minutes, without warning. Crank, cam, gaskets the works had to be replaced. I got off cheap for $1,800.00 bucks in bills since my neighbor is a mechanic. I feel for all you who've had problems, are having problems or WILL be experiencing problems. My advice is sell the car immediately and don't buy Chrysler products again.

I have followed this thread and related comments about the sludge and low-idle/hot-engine situation where oil pressure light activates.

I had this happen once on my 2000 intrepid 2.7 engine, at about 80k. All I did to fix it was change the PCV valve and the oil, of course, with the Castrol anti-sludge formula and a good filter. Haven't had any problems at all since. Car has 120,000k now. Also have back-flushed the rad to help keep the engine cool. Car runs great. I find the 2.7 -- if you maintain and keep a watchful eye -- is a decent little engine for both power and economy. It is very quiet.

My Name is Cheryl Eldridge. I own a used 2000 Dodge Intrepid.

I have put over $8000 in repair costs since buying the car from a DEALER in January 2005. In fact the car set in my yard for over a year while I saved money to fix it. It is now on its 2nd used 2.7 engine and keeps blowing out injectors. I want to have a 318 put in it, but the mechanic says no way it will work. Also, my mechanic is getting tired of seeing me coming and the 90 day warranty on the used 2.7 is up in 3 weeks. I feel he is buying time to get rid of me. Can anyone tell me if the injectors should have come with the replacement engine because he has charged me for replacing the blown injectors and says they came from the bad engine he removed. He has also charged me for a car computer saying this is what is blowing the injectors and not the used engine. I don't know what to believe anymore.

Help me please.

Hello everyone my mother in law owns one of these wonderful intrepids with 42000 miles on it no oil pressure at an idle. I tried to talk her out of it when she bought it she didn't listen. I've worked at a buy here pay here carlot for about five years working on all types of cars and if it where not for this great dodges and chysler products I would be out of a job. HA HA. I've put more engines in dodges than the salvage yards have in stock around here. We have 13 salvage yards local. I've bought every 318 360 2.7 3.2 3.5 and 3.9 they had.

We have a total of about 42 intrepids in these yards mostly 2.7 cars all with bad engines. Wow it does make transmissions a dime a dozen though and I have put my share of them in to.

I just bought a 1999 model 4 months ago. Changed oil, pcv vlave was clogged and after 3 moths I noticed a white smoke and thought this engine has a problem. I checked my oil next moring and the dip stick indicated almost no oil. I think dodge has a problem with the oil pressure sensor! Now I while I am changing my spark plug, I noticed a oil in the plugs. I see where the oil is going. What do they put that oil pressure sensor? Just for more gadgets for marketing?
