I have a 2004 Pontiac Aztec with only 3500 miles on it. It is in the shop now getting the AC compressor replaced. It has also died on me twice while driving and the problem cannot seem to be duplicated by the service department.
I have a 2001 Pontiac Aztek I bought in '03 at 39K miles that currently has 53K miles on it. Over the last 18 months, I have had to take this vehicle into the dealership on several occasions for service. First it was the Intake Manifold at 42K miles, the Body Control Module chip at 45K miles, the A/C at 49K miles, and most recently the battery died at 53K miles. My best purchase for this vehicle was the bumper to bumper extended warranty ($2500) that has paid for itself twice over. I love this car for its comfort, the roominess, and the agility in snow. I also have the camping package and camp with it often, which is great. That being said, I have had so many mechanical issues that I have called Pontiac directly to ask them to buy it back from me. They will not do this unless the vehicle has the same problem over and over again. My dealership said that I could contact the better business bureau and apply for an Arbitration. The application includes a letter that describes my experiences, includes my service records, and my request for exactly what I want from the company (for them to buy back my vehicle.) I am in the Seattle area and after reading the previous postings realized that I might have a case for Lemon Law. If anyone else in this area would like to apply for the Arbitration, the toll free number to call is 800-955-5100. This Bureau office is located in Portland, OR.
I have a 2001 Aztek, that I absolutly love.
But... I have recently had the front brakes replaced at 60,000 miles, the caliper failed causing damage to the rotor.
The AC condenser, compressor and HP valve were all replaced a week later. 2300.00 in repairs is a little much for a highway driven vehicle of this age and mileage.
Pontiac needs to make this right in my mind, if you see another Aztek driver stopped ask him about his problems and tell him/her about this web page. We as a collective may be able to get this covered on a voluntary recall.
We own a 2001 Aztek Gt with 55,000 miles on which we purchased new.We have had many problems with sun roof leaking as well as our roof due to roof rack. We have had wiring issues and fuses blowing crazy,we are on the third set of new tires, brakes have been replaced. Intake manifold is leaking coolant.Today noticed AC condenser leaking. We have kept our service records, oil change records, etc.If all of you are serious about us banding together to do something about these faulty parts in these cars, consider us in, just tell us what we need to do & lets get the ball rolling.I do still like my car but am very unhappy with these problems .Pontiac must know these parts on these cars are poor quality.
I have a 2001 Aztek and I love it. Love the roominess the smooth ride and the power. I bought it used with 46,000 miles on it. The day I picked it up the A/C did not work brought it back in a week later and after about a week they completley replaced the entire thing, at no cost to me of course since I just bought it. Everything is fine at this point with the exception of the occasional double click to get rear hatch open and my service engine soon light came on a couple of days ago. I am going to disconnect the battery when I get home today to reset the light rather than take it into the dealer which usually takes FOREVER. I think this will solve my problems. Just on a side note, people are always willing to give you all of their bad experiences before any good ones. If everything is going well why post anything about it, so I am under the belief that this is going to be a vehicle that I am going to enjoy for years to come... also I purchased the $1500 bumper to bumber 4yr 100k warranty (cause ya never know...lol)
I too have a 2001 Pontiac Aztek that I bought used last year. So far, I am happy with the car's features, especially the roominess and the comfortable ride. However, I too have noticed that certain things are starting to go wrong. Currently, there are just under 70k miles on it; it had 30k when I purchased it. I have had the following issues since purchase:
1. Broken gas cap cover - black cosmetic piece separated from the actual white cap.
2. Replaced brakes twice in last two years, replaced rotors once.
3. Erratic gas gauge - incorrect readings
4. Dash lights mysteriously not working on occasion
5. Knocking/pecking noise in front (new, still haven't figured this one out) The knocking gets faster as I increase my speed.
6. Back hatch NEVER opens with just one click. Most generally, I have to walk back there, physically lift up on the hatch, then press the button on my keychain.
7. Gas mileage is roughly 20 mpg...I'm not sure that's a problem, but I did hope for better.
8. In bad weather conditions, there is little to no visibility through rear hatch window. A wiper would be good back there.
9. A/C takes a while to cool off. After reading some of the other comments, I think I will check the condenser.
10. Blind spot in front at sides of windshield. You could run over someone on the corner if you were turning left and never see them.
In spite of the above, I think I should mention the things about my car that I really like.
1. Driving comfort - smooth, fun to drive.
2. Radio/Sound system
3. Good acceleration; plenty of power.
4. Comfortable, adjustable seats.
5. Roomy, rear cargo area.
6. "Cool" factor - It's just a cool car to be seen in!
About the air condenser!!Has any one tried to get GM "Pontiac" to take care of the condenser after the Warranty has ran out?I got 52000 miles on my 2002 Aztek and it has been GREAT. I guess lucky I don't know. I am thinking about trying to call G M and see what will happen. If anybody has done this let Me know what went on. Thanks ahead for any info! My A/C condensor went out at 57,000 we bought the car new, I called my dealer whom said I wasn't a "loyal" customer (we have 3 GM's in our driveway worth 50,000) I called GM they also said we were not loyal customers because we didn't get our oil changed at the dealer even though we have receipts for where we got it changed out every 3,000 miles, Gm was rude, I then told them that I will trade in all of our Gm's including my Aztek and purchase a Ford and I will never buy a GM again, so today we are going to the dealer to purchase a Ford. I already pd 200 to have the air recharged before I new there was a bulletin out on the condensor. Also my check engine light keeps coming on check your gas cap, that's what my problem has been, I also had a computer malfunction at 35,000, right at the time the warranty ran out, I will never ever ever purchase another GM again and I will tell everybody who listens the way they are treating Aztek owners.
I purchased my Aztec in April of this year. It has 58,000 on it. I have noticed the rear hatch has trouble opening, (you have to pop it about 8 times). The interior in the front seats look like they have a lot of wear and tear on them passenger seat interior looks like its falling apart. My A/C is working great though no problems with that. (I hope). The paneling inside the rear scratches real easy. The low beam bulbs have burnt out, that's fun to replace. On the cover of the shifter lever, the piece in the lever bunched up and was Very difficult to shift, but easy to fix. The cruise control lever fell out of the steering wheel and acts like a Nintendo joy stick and it still works! For the most part I love my aztec, get great gas mileage, lots of room to move, lots of storage space. Doesn't do very well on gravel (shimmy's around a lot. Stereo sounds great and great for the drive in.
I too have had the problems everyone else has. I own a 2002 Aztek and had my air conditioning compressor replaced at 36,000 miles and it's beginning to act up again. The latch for the trunk replaced twice and brake problems. And the rear air compressor fixed twice, and now it's broken again. I called today, and it's out of warranty at 59,000 miles. They only warranty for 1year/12 miles.
I do have to say that the car drives well, has lots of room, and great gas mileage.
I have a 2001 Pontiac Aztec. I have had a series of electrical problems, mostly blown exterior and interior lights. In addition, the heater has been fixed three times. Coolant was leaking in somewhere. Now, the rear hatch release has stopped working. The final major issue was the condensor going out on the AC at only 42,000 miles.
This past weekend (10/22/05) I purchased a 2002 Aztek in Memphis. My wife has for the past year been driving a 2004 Buick Rendezvous that she truly loves, so the Aztek being a great deal and my needing a car we decided to go for it. Soon as we got home (65 miles away) we noticed a pecking in the motor that had not been present when we were looking at the car on the lot. I have thus far in here found vague references to this same noise, and even a the number of a TSB from Pontiac about this, but have not been able to locate any thing that seems helpful. I also have noticed the lift gate not opening on the first try, but I really think I can live with that. I might also add that other than normally being a little distressed over this noise from the motor, I am really happy with the Aztek. If this is something that is being addressed through a recall or at least some type of discount through Pontiac that would be great, or even just some info on that this noise might be. (it was not purchased at a Pontiac dealership, so I'm not sure what help they will be able to offer, but planning on finding out Monday morning). Thanks in advance for any help on this matter as well as thanks for the great comments that are on here already. Scott Walnut, MS.
My 2001 Aztec (currently 61,000 miles) has suffered from similar issues:
1. Air Conditioner Condenser Failure.
2. Broken Gas Cap (resulted in check engine indication)
3. Failed Battery Control Module (Note that this was not a sudden failure. The BCM degraded slowly over time. Symptoms included (in order of occurrence) : Rear hatch required multiple attempts to open, air conditioner began to take longer to cool the vehicle, could not put the windows up after the key had been removed from the ignition. Eventually: rear hatch would not open at all, even with the key; A/C stopped cooling completely)
4. "Exhaust Rattle" - In all fairness, this one was probably due to the "roads" I was driving on more so than any deficiency of the vehicle.
5. Peeling Paint. The clear coat is starting to come off, particularly from around the doors and hatch. Plastic tail light covers are also suffering from cosmetic issues.
6. Water leaking onto floor of passenger side of the car. Cause unknown.
7. Recent drop in gas mileage. I used to get about 24 mpg. For the last month or so I've only been getting about 17 mpg. Cause unknown.
That said, I still love this car. It may be ugly, but it is extremely functional. I can fit my bike, two whitewater kayaks, and all my gear inside.
I have a 2005 pontiac aztek. it currently has 7000 miles on it and is also having problems with the rear hatch not opening. I have to hold the button on the remote in while I lift it. I have had it to the dealer 3 times and had a gm district rep look at it. they both have basically told me they can't fix it and too bad. has anyone tried to take this to court as a lemonlaw case or gotten any satisfaction from gm over it?
Hi, I own a 2002 Aztec that I bought new and I have had many problems with it.
At 47,000 miles the head gasket blew and when my mechanic worked on it he said the one bolt was never completely tightened.
The hatch has never opened unless I push the button and lift at the same time and I have brought it back for adjustment several times.
I had to have all the wheel bearings replaced within a week of each other with only 37,000 miles on the car.
The intake manifold gasket had to be replaced with 40,000 miles on it.
Most recently with 55,000 miles on it the a/c condenser needs to be replaced.
All that said I love driving the Aztec, it handles great in the snow and ice and is a really comfortable car to drive in and to ride in.
