I bought a Pontiac Aztec AWD that had 42K on it. It now has about 55K on it and I have had many of the same issues that other owners have complained about. A $2000 Head gasket replacement for one. The rear hatch button is an issue. The A/C takes a LONG time to cool down. A week after the head gasket was repaired it wouldn't start so I put a new starter in it. The car still has trouble starting. I plan to harass General Motors Corp. about these problems to see if they are willing to do anything to correct these problems.

I have a used 2001 Aztek I bought two and a half years ago, with 39k miles on it. I liked the car when test driven, and did some research on it. Most of the complaints I read about at the time were about the visibility out the rear and the AC. I guess I have been lucky with mine (knock on wood) as I have had only minor quirky problems with it.

The check engine light comes steady on once in a while, which usually means emission system problems, but I put some slick 50 fuel system cleaner in it and it goes away in about a day.

It has a sticky caliper on one side, so I have to watch the brake wear, but have not had to replace the brakes or tires after putting about 40k more miles on it.

The AC stopped putting out cold air once, but after I recharged it myself, it works fine except once in a while the blower vibrates loudly under acceleration.

The tail lights are all abrazed and scratched - wind?

I noticed other Azteks that have the spoiler on the back. I don't seem to have this.

Overall it is a wierd looking, but extremely versatile vehicle. Depreciates fast!!!

I have a '01 Pontiac Aztec Yellow AWD "leather/sunroof" the following have gone wrong since '01:

A) of course the A/C condenser "I called corporate and sent a registered letter to the president of Pontiac North America. I rec'd a call from someone from corporate customer service who was willing to split the $800 repair bill.

B) Computer module- replaced for $1200-

C) Wheel bearings- replaced for $600-

Looks like the usual suspects... other than that, car has been good...great mileage 23MPG.

If anyone has the '01 use Mothers "Back to Black" on the moldings, no more worn out, white looking plastic.

2001 Pontiac Aztek. Just blew out the head gasket. 100,000K miles and needs a new engine. Multiple problems:

Wheel bearings replaced twice on one front wheel, once on the other. A/C blew out in 2003. AWD sensors fell off.

Continuous problems with this vehicle. Do not recommend.

I have a 2002 Pontiac Aztek that I purchased new. I've taken it on many road trips, so it already has 90,000 miles on it. I've had to have the bottom back hatch repaired twice (once on the dealership's dime, and once on my own).

I just found out today that I will have to pay $1000 to replace the condenser because it is leaking freon. I'm very unhappy about that.

Only other complaint (minor) is that it is very hard to clean the center console area.

Otherwise, it has been a great vehicle. I've even used the camping package several times.

I bought my Aztek used in January. It looked weird, but I drove it and it was OK. Since then...

A/C Condenser - 1000.00.

Wheel bearing - 600.00.

Now the gas gauge isn't working properly. It just so happened to quit on the morning of a 1200 mile trip. Luckily I have been tracking my mileage and know that I can get 350 miles on a tank of gas.

I would never recommend this car to anyone.

I have a 2001 Aztek that I bought new that now has 118k miles. It has been a very reliable car up to this point. The only problem I had early on was an air conditioner problem that was fixed under warranty. I had noticed for the last few months that the coolant reserve tank would quite often be low. I had a pressure test done, but could never find any leaks. Last week the car overheated and I took it into a local garage. Same story as most of the other reviews, head gaskets need to be replaced and heads need to be checked for damage. Major bill to repair. The gas gauge is starting to act wacky also. One minute tank reads full, the next on empty. I can live with that rather than paying the cost of repair.

I can't believe Pontiac hasn't figured out how to repair the trunk latch. The problem isn't the latch, its the rubber bumpers that push the trunk open that don't work well, especially when it gets cold.

No problem with tires prematurely wearing out. I was planning on giving the car to my kids to drive and I probably will still do that now that I have to fix it, but I would not recommend buying a used Aztek.

2002 Pontiac Aztek: Bought new, got extended warranty. Now has about 50K miles. Had the following problems:

-Battery gave out sooner than average.

-Brakes started disintegrating and leaving pewter-colored powder all over the wheels.

-Coolant leak

-Oil leak

-Fuel gauge drops from full to empty (fuel tank replaced, but I don't think that was the problem)

-Newest intermittent problem: When I start the car, the horn honks briefly one time. The KEY FOB BATTERY LOW light comes on (I don't have a remote entry key fob so this is an erroneous message) and the SERVICE VEHICLE SOON light comes on, the warning bell dings constantly, the A/C stops working, the door locks don't work, and the warning bell and headlights don't go off when the car is turned off. The only way to turn off the lights and bell is to disconnect the battery cable. Then we reconnect the battery cable and everything goes right back to normal -- until the next time it happens. This is occurring with increasing frequency. The dealer can't duplicate it and insists they are stumped after replacing $1600 worth of parts courtesy of my warranty company. Any suggestions?

I have an aztek that had electrical problems. Hatch wouldn't open radio would go out or change stations on its own. Finally got service manager involved and he had an engineer com in from Detroit. He said main computer was defective and was replaced under warranty whew!!

Latest issue is ignition lock any suggestions?

I feel your pain as I have a lot of the same issues. I bought my 2001 Pontiac Aztec used as well (can't remember how many kilometres on it at this time). I have owned it now for 2 and a half years and in the first three months, engine ran hot and started leaking coolant, turned into a full and complete head gasket repair ($2000). One year later, full transmission ($1200). A/C has never worked, but a dealership told me previous owners had it in twice and repaired and that it was a "known issue" with this vehicle. I left it and just roll down the windows now! My rubber bumpers for the back hatch do the same thing in the winter, but it works alright in the summer and am now looking at new brakes as there is a very loud and suspicious metal on metal grinding sound in the front right tire!! Also, front driver and passenger side doors don't seal properly and always look like they are a little bit open? It has never been in an accident. And I have also had issues with the ignition lock - I had to "reef" on the key to get it to turn over (wheels were straight and not locked). Any suggestions on the doors and the ignition lock would be greatly appreciated - I was not given the option of a warranty at the time of purchase.

I still absolutely love my Aztec - look and style - regardless of all its faults. Every vehicle has its issues!

The car (2001) ran great for about the first 4 years then... Of course, cracked condenser on the A/C unit. Repair shop says he gets a couple of these a week between the Montana and Aztek. 1.5 years later, I was stopping for a red light and when I reached about 10 mph the high idle kicked in and the car "took off on me." Replaced the computer in the car and has been in and out of the shop three times for the same thing. So far- so good. Now the drivers side wheel bearing is shot and will be replaced next week. I really do love my car and this is the first car that I have owned for over 5 years now. Maybe I should expect problems, but I didn't think I would have these problems with a vehicle that has 40k on it.

OK I have a 01 Pontiac Zztek so far I had to replace.

1) fuel filter (car keept turning off)

2) fuel gauge failed (fuel pump assembly)

3) leaks on passenger side

4) rear hatch does not open

5) emission evaporation system failed.

People complain about tires, do you care to get them aligned when you get new tires?? maybe that's your problem?
