I have a HYUNDAI ACCENT GL 4 DR.. I bought it from the original owner two months ago.. and I have the same problem: RPM GO UP TO 4000-5000 without me accelerating, even I parked in front of a red traffic light.

Often, the RPM goes high suddenly when I am driving..

I felt I can't control my car..

I felt like the car was gonna rush out.. it is so scary.. the RPM is soooo unstable...

I have had my 2001 Hyundai Accent GL, 4 door 1.6L since Jan/Feb 2006. It was inherited, lucky me, and had hardly any mileage put on it because the owners drove only about 15 miles a week on it (sometimes not even). I'm now realizing that my car is almost 7 years old already... As I was reading the other comments I have become extremely scared and feel that I am not safe driving my car. God forbid it decides it's going to keep going in traffic. Since I've had the car I have done some body work to it, replaced all the spark plugs, all the tires, all the brakes (pads), speed sensor, and 02 sensors as well as some kind of core pack (?) that is associated with the spark plugs. I was also rear-ended and now the bumper is cracked and popped out on the one side. I love this car, however. I unfortunately cannot afford to fix the bumper and the other day I was driving on a highway and I always have to lay on it to get up a hill. I went to pass a truck and my car decided it wasn't going to shift up, there was a loud and dangerous buckle. I was scared to death the rest of the way because when I tried to push my foot down to the floor again to make it up the hill, it felt like there was no power whatsoever. I thankfully did not stall in the middle of a busy highway, but I sure thought I was going to. My check engine light is currently on (and was from before) due to an 02 sensor that needs to be replaced (the one in the back). I don't know if that has anything to do with it? My transmission fluid is good, oil is good and everything else seems to be the same as it was. The engine did get louder with a gurgling sound. Does anyone know how I may be able to fix this problem?

I am the original owner of my 2001 Hyundai Accent L Hatchback.

I am currently experiencing loss of oil. The dealership is unable to figure out why, as there are no leaks anywhere and no blue smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. They did find that the pressure control valve was open and not closing, so they cleaned it with carburetor fluid. They are now monitoring the oil by checking every 500 miles.

I was also informed by the dealer that I have sludge in my motor. They say it is due to not maintaining the oil changes. How can that be when they are the only people that did the oil changes on my vehicle from day one of purchase? Not only that, there is water in the oil and the dealer is stating that condensation is normal. When you look at the oil it looks like more than condensate.

Is anybody else out there having the same issue?

I have the same problem: rpm go high and the car accelerate by itself.. it bothered me for a long time..

So I went to the dealer.. they change the "throttle sensor"..now the problem is fixed..

The price is $270..not under warranty...

I have a Hyundai Accent 2001 and had the same problem with the car accelerating on it's own and feeling like I couldn't stop the car from moving; very scary feeling. Anyway, after bringing the car back and forth to the shop for two months and having the transmission flushed twice, I read some complaints on-line and convinced the dealership to replace the transmission at 30,000. It has been pretty good since.

I have also experienced the same problem with my 2001 Accent gl. I just got a 2003 transmission installed after buying from a Toronto dealership selling used vehicles. 2 days later, and since then, I find that when I'm accelerating, my car goes only 1/2 the speed I'm supposed to be driving at, and it makes a "vere" noise (like I'm revving the engine... but I am not). After a few seconds, it goes to the regular speed. Also, my check engine light is on, and will never come off. It just passed the safety and emissions test so I know the car is fine... at least I hope so.

Can someone please shed some light on this???

Thanks.

Hi Everyone.

I was reading this topic while my Hyundai 2001 GSI is at the Garage!!!

I had the same problem as all of you: RPM to 5, no shift to 3rd speed, Go from 100 Km/h to 60km/h on the highway... After we changed the Pulse Generator A and B, we looked into the transmission control board (it is an automatic) to figure out that it was a connection that was broken.

I changed almost everything on my Hyundai; I bought it from the dealer 2 1/2 months ago and I can tell you that my car now has a new oil pan for the motor, and today I changed the oil transmission pan and the filter kit for the transmission.

I will have a new right front tierod and again new caliper installed. Here in Quebec, winter is soooo bad, my car is rusty and the person that had the car before me didn't take care of it. I know a lot of people that have the same car as us and have the same problem. At least we are all there to support each other. Wish that the people that buy a new 2008 Hyundai will be saved from all those problems.

Even though Hyundai is... crap, I love this car so much... Shame on me! :P.

Take care all!

Caherine, Quebec, Canada.

I bought a 2001 Accent with less than 30,000 miles just a week ago for my daughter. The car is in practically new condition inside and out, was originally owned by an older lady, and she had all the service records since the day it was purchased. I paid the lady the Blue Book price for a car in "Good" condition and figured I had a pretty good deal going there but now I am not so sure.

Last night my daughter was driving home from school when she called me in a panic because her car was accelerating on its own while at a red light. She felt that it was going to launch forward so she put it in neutral and turned it off. When she turned it back on the RPM's were still high but gradually came down. When she got home I checked the throttle linkage to see if it was binding and even sprayed some WD40 on it but I couldn't see any problem.

The other problem is that the car pulls to the right. The tires are original and show good wear so I figured that it was probably just in need of a routine alignment. After having it aligned twice on the same day, they couldn't figure out why it continues to pull to the right. The shop didn't charge me since they could not fix it. The mechanic says that it could be a bad motor mount that is causing the engine to shift in that direction but that is only speculation.

After doing some on-line research and finding this forum with like problems, I decided to take it to a trusted foreign auto shop in Long Beach where hopefully they can fix it or tell me if I should just cut my losses and get something else. It is disappointing because this is my 3rd Hyundai, and the other two were perfect cars which never gave me any trouble.

And on a side note, it was interesting to look through the service records from the original owner and to see that the Hyundai dealer took advantage of her on warranty repairs. They charged her full price for repairs that should have been covered, and for services that look completely unnecessary.

I had the same problem a few years ago on my 2001 Accent, and I replaced the throttle sensor (a potentiometer type sensor) that fixed part of it, then I replaced the speed sensor, which is located under the engine on the driver side. Both were simple to do (2 bolts each). Total parts cost less than $150. Now if the engine would stop burning oil.
