I think a couple of people are getting carried away with their 106gti s. I am on my second one, I timed it before I modified it with a mate in the car who timed it. 0-60 in 7.2 seconds and I got 128 topend. as for putting an induction kit on it and keeping up with a sti is abit of a far fecthed idea. I have had induction kit fitted, exhaust system, kent cams, ported and polished head power boost valve competition gasket and jus recently forged pistons fitted and sports manifold and I could tell you for a fact I wouldn't keep up with a sti. you must have a super 106gti.
Nope, many motoring journalists said the 106 gti was the best handling FWD car 10 years ago. I've seen one episode on Top Gear where they had Ferraris, Skylines etc and a 106 gti for a competition; which one handled better, and Clarkson said the 106 gti was the 2nd best handling car in the world.
"Jeremy was talking about the 205 GTi, not the 106" WRONG!!!
It was the 106 GTi he was talking about!
The 205 GTi, I remember him saying that you could bring a Ferrari or something, down to some twisty road and the 205 would be right behind it!
The 205 GTi and the 106 GTi are probably (in my opinion) up there in the top 3 of FWD handling. Only the Integra Type-R is the only one that I think as a whole package is better! But then the price difference when new is huge.

Oh my word!
I have just gone through all the comments and it just makes me laugh!!!
The 106 GTi cannot do 140mph as its gearing will not allow it to (this is coming from an owner of one that regularly goes to track days).
On the plus side of the car, is its sublime handling, that can put more expensive cars to shame!
The 106 is a great car to own and drive, and with all Peugeot's good hot-hatch's it will eventually be a classic and rightly so.
I for one don't care if the image of the 106 GTi is stained by the boy-racer crowd, because once they have souped their cars up to THE MAX (LOL) and destroyed most of them, then the price of the 106 will start to rise, just like my 205 GTi 1.9 that I paid 700 GBP nearly 4 years ago, and have already had offer's over 2000GBP.
Will I get rid of them?
Never, because Peugeot will never make another GTi like them I'm afraid, due to health and safety reasons.
Shame really.
My little diablo red pocket rocket goes well off the clock @ 140mph. it does 70mph in 2nd gear, 105 in third, 130mph in 4th an depends how brave you feel in fifth. This is all thanks to a gearbox fitted from an S2 106 rallye. Although the gears are longer it still improves acceleration through the box. It's sitting around 155bhp, with piper cams, competition head gasket, daztek unichip and remap (rev-limiter set at just over 8000rpm) miltek 4 branch manifold and stainless steel system. Still to run her on the quarter mile, will be happy with anything under 15 seconds!
I have a 98 106gti and it will hit 144mph on a sat nav! I have piper cams, performance ecu, rev to just over 8k, comp head gasket, full group n, and gearbox off a vtr (longer 5th).
As for a gti keeping up with an STI, thats a myth!

I am looking to buy a 106 gti for around 3k. I have been looking and have seen a few 1.4 quicksilvers that have had engine swaps for 1.6 16v gti engines. are these cars prone to breaking down? or do they run OK, I would get one that had all the drive shafts etc from the 1.6 engine.
I'm 19 and I can just afford to buy, modify and insure a 106 GTI. I'm wondering whether a Saxo VTR will be the better pick??? Help people... I THINK the 106 is faster than the VTR, am I right?... this will be my first car BTW ;) HA... so much fun to be had soon from now.. anyways guys, I'm borderline GTI, what do you lot say...
Just google it. A VTR has 90/100bhp depending on age, and does 0-60 in about 10 seconds. The 106 GTi has 125bhp and does 0-60 in about 8 seconds.
The equivalent Saxo is the VTS with same stats. There are 90/100bhp 106's if you prefer the Peugeot.
I think the VTSs cost less to start with. Both engines are pretty prone to headgasket failure and are generally not that well built.
