2000 Ford Expedition with 150K miles.
At 75K miles, I got a P0308 code (#8 misfire) from Autozone, changed all plugs with Autolite plugs, still missing, then replaced #8 coil pack, which fixed it. At 120K miles had to replace coil pack #6 too.
I now have 150K miles on it and have been dealing with P0401 (EGR flow insufficient), hesitating on interstate. Changed EGR valve (checked vacuum hoses - changed 2 of them), changed fuel & air filters (also $10 fuel injector cleaner fluid in gas tank), changed DPFE sensor, Mass Air Flow sensor (replaced one at a time checking to see if one would fix it... STILL no fix!!! Periodically hesitates on interstate a little at high speeds 65mph, still got code P0401. Kept driving it for 3 days. Then started missing worse and getting P0305 (#5 misfire). Changed all plugs with Bosch Platinum +2 plugs. Cleared codes by disconnecting battery ground cable.
Ran real good and strong for one day. Then started missing real bad at idle and when driving slow. The missing was less noticeable at high speeds. Sputters real bad though. Got code P0401, P0308!!! Took it to Meineke for Catalytic Converter check this morning. Tested all of them and said they are still good! Thank goodness since it has 4 catalytic converters, two on each side!!!
Now what?!? I'm getting ready to check the #8 coil pack, then do some research on checking / cleaning fuel injectors. I'll let you know what I end up finding out. IF you have any suggestions, PLEASE post, since I'm tired of banging my head against the wall. Appreciate it.
I have a 98 (eb) 5.4 with 98000 on it and the truck started running really rough, and a few days ago finally the check engine light came on, so I took it down to autozone and they pulled some codes, and this is what the report said..
Ho2s 12 circuit condition (heated oxygen sensor bank1 sensor 2).
Cylinder misfire detected - cylinder #4.
1. Ignition system fault- spark plug (s)
ignition wires, coil
2. Vacuum leak
3. Injector fault
4. High or low fuel pressure.
Well to make a long story short, I changed the number 4 coil, spark plug and the boot along with all the other spark plugs, and I also fixed the vacuum leak and still have the same problem, so I went and bought the O2 sensor/ a new fuel injector and a fuel filter. After I change those things, I'll let you guy know what was the outcome, but if you have some advice for me, please post them.
Thank you... Jason M.
I had similar problem. Sputtering, lumbering, weakling power out of 97 Expy. Pulled codes and had your garden variety laundry list -
P0171 (system too lean, bank one)
P0133 (O2 Senson slow response)
P0402 (Excess EGR flow)
P1131 (lack of upstream O2 sensor - lean bank one)
First I researched these heavily on the net before making my plan. I suggest you do the same before pep boys or ford takes for you at least a grand.
First I replaced the driver side O2 Sensor - relatively easy with the special socket tool.
Then I found some vacuum leaks (under hood up between battery and windshield area.)
The I took to pep boys for diagnostics - waste of money, they made some guesses but did not even drive the truck. Said they wanted to replace the DFPE and the EGR for $550.
Thanks, but no - Autozone here I come - I did them both in 45 min or so for about $100. Check engine light back on showing P01131 - lack of O2 - OK fine, this one is a pain to get here is THE link you need! http://f150online.com/forums/showthread.php?t=315787
ahhhhh - finally, how to do it WITH PICTURES!!!.
Just finished replacing passenger side O2 sensor- check engine light went off by itself - truck runs like a champ! It has its legs back and has most of power.
I still have a vaccum leak somewhere as when I am going up hill my ac blows out the defrost vents. I WILL find this leak if it kills me. Will let my fellow posters know when I do. Good luck.
Then I.
I have a 2000 Eddie Bauer Expedition that my wife and I bought new. We have 217,000 plus miles on it. Last week I used a garden hose to wash some Arizona desert dirt off the engine. The next day it would misfire badly at 1200-2000 rpm, and the "check engine soon" light would come on. If I would accelerate into passing gear, it would run smoothly. I took it to our local Ford dealership and they said the coil on #4, #6, #7 were bad. The mechanic told me the coil packs had hairline cracks in the rubber? boot, and water penetrated into it. My wife and I absolutely love this vehicle. With it's high clearance, we navigated around large boulders while driving through stream beds to follow trails up into the mountains in Alaska, British Columbia, and Yukon Territory, putting 11,000 miles on it in seven weeks with no problems. Our service manager at the dealership told me water spray from road conditions hardly ever causes problems with the coil. Just don't wash the engine and spray water directly onto the coils.
I have a 98 Expedition, 105K and I love it!
However, this is the third time in the last 9000 miles I am bringing it in for repair. Same symptoms - hesitation and bucking.
First time was reported that it was cylinder misfire, $680 for repair.
2nd time, $275 for coil and fuel injector.
Third time - this time it's bucking and engine light was on, then off, then on, stayed on and is giving me a flash dance!
So now I am going to try a new mechanic who might listen to me when I tell him that I can smell antifreeze from time to time.
And why is it that I have to refill it 3 - 4 times a year? Where does it go? {on the coils and ruining my cylinders apparently!} Last time they tightened the clamp on it, telling me it was loose - this time I think I will bring in some of these postings and hopefully they will do it right!
Why doesn't Ford put out a recall and fix this hose? They put out the recall for the cruise control... what the heck? Love the truck - hate the chronic problem...
I just bought a 1998 Ford Expedition XL, 110,000 miles. I did not buy the warranty and the very next day the check engine light came on. I took it to Auto Zone and the code read misfire. It misfires mostly when idling or at a low rate of speed. My boyfriend changed the coil pack but there is no difference. He assumes that the person who detailed the car pressure washed the engine and ruined the plugs and wires, however the wires look brand new. Any suggestions?

I have a 2001 Expedition XLT 4.6. When I bought it from the dealer they said they just had it all tuned. Unfortunately when I got it from them it the gas level was almost on empty, so I went to the Arco gas station and filled it up with 87 octane. The next day I started having problems- engine was shaking "misfiring" and engine light was blinking for a while then went to solid light. I took it to the dealer mechanic and they hooked it up to the computer and it read misfire #4 and he told me that when you have new plugs that you are suppose to fill your tank 3 times with high premium (97) octane and then after about filling it up 3 times you can use regular.? Is this B.S.? or is he right?
