1998 Ford Escort GTi from UK and Ireland - Comments

The Escort gti is pathetic & SLOW!! 0-60 10.5sec!! These silly performance figures some of you are quoting are VERY misleading.. I have test driven a few Escort gtis and they are FAR from fast! This car does NOT warranty a gti badge.

Does anyone know if a K&N apollo or K&N typhoon is OK for the GTI all I seem to be getting offerd is the 57i kit! also how can I chrome up my engine?

U must of had a crappy gti then mate, cause a focus st couldnt even keep up with me today and all I've done is a new exhaust system and new leads, you should also know that the escort gti holds the same break as a one of the golf gti engines. it's a smooth lookin car tho you gotta admit half leather seats and ac in some of them I love mine. a legend not to be dissed.

A Focus ST would beat the escort GTI, 1.8 16v vs 2.0 16v turbo, no contest.

A focus st is actually a 2.5 turbo. My mate has one, and the Escort GTi, although it's a good looking car is pretty slow off the mark; I have one and I struggle to pull away from my mate's VTR, but when they get going I can keep with stuff like 106 GTi, which one of my mates also has.

I have recently had a de cat along with 2.0L throttle body and oxygen sensor, as well as the 2.0L cam. Goes a lot better; now can stay with 106 GTi easy, probably overtake it.

Getting it chipped soon, and one of those ETS turbos off the Internet; should be sitting at around 160/170 at a push. Will have it on a dyno and will be able to give a few things a shock then.

I have a Si 115ps. Same as the GTI, right?

There is a squeaking noise coming from the belt, below where the power steering fluid is located. Are there any ideas what it could be?

Yeah, what every one is saying here is right. I had a 5 door Escort GTi. When I first got it, it did 9.5 seconds 0-60 and 120.

After a 4-2-1 manifold, decat, cat back exhaust, viper induction kit and 2.0 litre throttle body, it did 8.5 seconds 0-60 and 127. I had it on the rolling road and it was 125 bhp.

I now have a 3 door GTi, and my god it is quick. It's a standard car and it went off the clock and 0-60 bout 8 seconds. I have now done similar mods as to my old car, and it does about 7.8 0-60. It also somehow beats a Civic 1.6 VTi, which is 160 bhp (his speedo was at 135 when I overtook him), keeps level with a 306 GTi 6, which is 170bhp, and I raced my mate's Clio 182 starting from 70 to 125 (which was showing on both of our clocks), and he only just pulled away from me.

Haha to last comment, seriously mate, you would have got left in real life by both the Civic and Clio in any race. Nuff said. Stop dreaming.

I have a state blue 5 door gti, kinda loooks purple in sum light, very tidy car, near on mint. i paid 1750 for the car with 64k tax n test... i polish it twice a week lol... got an induction kit,3inch outer rolled exhaust, sounds, blue leads, shark finn arial all that stuff lol. i pay 475 fully comp with no claims protection, hirer car all that stuff with 1 year no claim, im 23,and last year I paid 913 fird party... big reduction!!that's with direct line... if you look at the engine, top left of the head, theres a blue valve cap?wats that for?well I changed the cap to a blue dice valve cap...

All the people saying there slow... mine isn't, majority of others arnt, just so happens there are some dogs out there... but you aint drove every 1...i like the look of them... very smart...compared to other litle boy racer cars you see.

I just like the look and interior of my escort gti, im about to get a 2.0L with T28 turbo conversion on mine then stage 3 chip it, shoul be a laugh to watch some of the other drivers faces wen I blast by, ha ha ha!

Can anyone tell me if the 130 cams from a Mondeo fit straight into a 1.8 GTi R reg?

Hi, I just got a 3 door in red. Just put an induction kit on this thing. It flies, I've done 0 to 60 in just under 8 seconds. It handles superb.

I only paid 1400 for it and it only had 60k on the clock. Well happy.

Anyone know if the GTI owners club got off the ground?
